(From the Joplin Police Department)

Last night, August 30, 2018, the Joplin Police Department’s SWAT Team secured a residence at 1223 South McKinley. The Joplin Police Department’s Special Investigative Unit had obtained a search warrant for the residence. The SWAT team located 5 people in the residence. Detectives then began an investigation.

Edvard Munch photography exhibit on tap at Spiva Art Gallery

(From Southern News Service)

The Spiva Art Gallery on the campus of Missouri Southern is preparing for its latest exhibit. “The Experimental Self: Edvard Munch’s Photography” will be on display September 10th - October 19th.

The show is being hosted by the gallery and the MSSU International Themed Semester. It was funded by private donors through the Missouri Southern Foundation.

Best known for his 1893 iconoclastic image known worldwide as “The Scream,” Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863–1944) is renowned for his expressionistic and psychological paintings, prints, and watercolors. Unknown to most, he also took photographs. On view for only the second time in the United States, this exhibition of rarely seen photographs and short films by Edvard Munch emphasizes the artist’s experimentalism and showcases his exploration of the camera as an expressive medium. Curated by a leading specialist in early modern Scandinavian art, Dr. Patricia Berman, professor of art history at Wellesley College, the exhibition has been organized by the American-Scandinavian Foundation / Scandinavia House in partnership with the Munch Museum, Oslo. It was originally presented at Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America from Nov. 21, 2017 to April 7, 2018.

This is also the final week for the “Look to Norway” exhibit.

The group exhibition features artwork created by MSSU art and design students enrolled in the Spring 2018 International Art Seminar. The course culminated in a trip over spring break to study the art, culture, and landscape of Norway. The students traveled to Oslo, Flam, and Bergen, visiting art and cultural museums, national treasures, and historic sites. Students also

participated in numerous cultural dinners and both coastal and inland fjord tours. The works of art created for this show were inspired by each student's experiences throughout the trip. The students aimed to express the history, landscape, and aesthetic of Norway within their art, representing the beauty and culture of Norway in every aspect of their pieces.

The exhibition includes works of art by MSSU art and design majors Brett Dorrance, Jenson Maydew, Hunter Mills, Amber Wagner, Cicily Atkinson, and Susan Griffith. The trip was led by Dr. Christine Bentley, associate professor of art and design.

The Spiva Art Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Cherokee County domestic disturbance call leads to arrest on battery, meth charges

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

Just before 2:00 on Wednesday afternoon, Cherokee County Sheriffs Deputies were dispatched to 12384 Northwest Sherman City Road for a domestic disturbance.

While conducting the investigation, deputies obtained information regarding illegal drug activity occurring in the residence, which is on the same property as Lightening Creek Bait and Tackle.

Danny Lee “Butch” Smith, 34, was arrested and investigators obtained a search warrant for the property.

While conducting the search, suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia was located and seized.

Smith was transported to the Cherokee County Jail on allegations of Domestic Battery, Possessing Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

He later posted $6,000 bond and was released.

“This is the second search warrant our office has executed on this property in as many years,” according to Cherokee Coun ty Sheriff David Groves.

A previous narcotic search warrant was executed in the summer of 2016, which led to the arrest of Smith and Casey Elizabeth Gudde. Gudde was later convicted and imprisoned in the Kansas Department of Corrections for Possessing Meth with Intent to Distribute.

"Often times we see a correlation between drug abuse and domestic violence. It's important for victims of domestic violence to know there are resources available to help them get out of those dangerous environments. Victims can contact our office at 620-429-3992, their local law enforcement agencies or the Safehouse Crisis Center Hotline at 800-794-9148," concluded Sheriff Groves.

Steps Joplin area residents need to continue receiving KOZJ

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin received notification from Becky Lockhart, Outreach Specialist in the Federal Communications Commission’s Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau’s Consumer Affairs and Outreach Division about an upcoming broadcast transition.
The following information was provided by Lockhart and is being printed in its entirety for the public to assist them in receiving the KOZJ-Joplin channel after a broadcast transition:
We understand that there will be a broadcast transition in your community scheduled to be completed by 9/4/2018. You may have already seen several public service announcements being aired by your local over-the-air broadcasters advising on what steps consumers need to take to continue receiving channels.
The station that will be transitioned in Joplin is KOZJ.
Part of my role at the FCC is to provide information to consumers and community organizations. In advance of the transition, here are some resources that may assist with answering questions posed by your constituents regarding upcoming changes.

A consumer-focused FAQ providing an over view of the broadcast transition that resulted from the Incentive Auction is available at https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/consumer-faqs-tv-spectrum-auction. Clicking on the upper right corner of the page will provide general rescanning information (but not the video) in Spanish, Tagalog, Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese.
  • One of the most important messages is reminding consumers to rescan. A video on this topic is available at fcc.gov/rescan. The video is only available in English. A general overview of rescanning is available in Spanish, Tagalog, Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese by clicking on information.
  • The FCC has updated its DTV Maps to include information related to the broadcast transition. This tool is available at fcc.gov/maps/dtv-maps. By entering information about your location, you will be able to see what channels are transmitting in your area.
  • Consumer Guides addressing broadcast issues are available at https://www.fcc.gov/general/broadcast-cable-and-satellite-guides.
  • Consumers who would like to file a complaint can do so at our online Consumer Complaint Center located at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov.
  • A consumer-focused video providing an overview of the transition is available at www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hvaM3_x4vM.
  • By scrolling down to the For Partners section on our webpage fcc.gov/outreach, you will be able to download a rescan tip card. If needed I can send you copies of this card to share with your contacts.
What does this mean for consumers?
What this means is that the station is changing the frequency that it submits its TV signals on. The actual channel that people tune in to watch will not change. But since there are technical changes to the signal that the channel is being transmitted on, TV antennas and DTV converter boxes will not automatically receive the channel once this change (or as we refer to it - broadcast transition) occurs.
People who use antennas to view over-the-air broadcast TV will need to rescan their TVs or converter boxes to receive the channel.
If people subscribe to cable or satellite or other companies to receive TV – they will not have to do anything because these providers handle the technical aspects of the transition.

(From the Redings Mill Fire Protection District)

Friday August 24th, 2018 11:24 A.M, Redings Mill Fire District with Automatic Mutual Aid from Joplin Fire Department, responded to 4720 S. Rangeline for a reported structure fire.

Joplin Chief 2 arrived and advised it was a working fire in a mobile home. He stated that all occupants were out and accounted for.

Heavy fire conditions were found near the rear of the home. Redings Mill Engine 5 arrived and fire suppression efforts were conducted. The fire was brought under control at 11:52 A.M.

Rangeline was closed for a brief period due to a water supply line that was used in the suppression efforts. The occupants were home at the time and reported the fire, they were able to escape the home with no injuries.

The occupants did state that smoke detectors that Redings Mill Fire District had installed recently assisted in alerting them of the fire. The Red Cross was contacted for the displacement of the occupants. The home and contents were considered a total loss.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. Our appreciation is extended to the assisting agencies that included Joplin Fire Department, Newton County Ambulance, Missouri Department of Transportation and Newton County Sheriff’s Department.

(From the Joplin Fire Department)

Friday at approximately 11:26 am, Engine 4A responded as automatic aid for the Redings Mill Fire Protection District to a reported structure fire on S. Rangeline at the Shady Lane Mobile Home Park. On arrival Redings Mill was attacking a fire in a mobile home, Engine 4 provided a supply line to the Redings Mill engine from a nearby hydrant and assisted with fire ground operations.

The ability to provide assistance to our neighbors and our neighbors reciprocating that aid to us is a tremendous asset for the entire community and makes all of us better at what we do.
