Fugitive arrested at rural Baxter Springs home

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

Just after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies obtained information that 46-year-old James Eric Paul Thompson was hiding in a rural Baxter Springs home.

Thompson continued his attempt to hide from deputies as they searched the residence, then refused to comply once he was detected. A Sheriff's K9 was then deployed to assist in the apprehension.

In May, 2022, Thompson pled guilty in Cherokee County District Court to Felony Criminal Threat. As a result of the plea, Thompson, who was not in custody at the time of the hearing, was ordered to surrender himself to the Cherokee County Jail in August 2022, to then be transferred to the Kansas Department of Corrections and serve a 16 month sentence.

After failing to surrender, Cherokee County authorities sought an arrest warrant on Thompson for Aggravated Escape from Custody.

Following his arrest on Wednesday, Thompson was transported to the Cherokee County Jail, where he remains without bond.

According to online records with the Kansas Department of Corrections, Thompson had previously been incarcerated in the Kansas Prison System after being convicted in Cherokee County on charges of Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Burglary and Theft.

Goodman police officer commended for saving a life

(From Goodman Police Department)

Officer Prestyon Kalgren demonstrated exceptional performance in an effort to rescue or save human life, which, without such intervention would likely have resulted in death while serving as a member of the Goodman Police Department on 03/26/2023.

On March 26th 2023, Officer Kalgren responded to a call for service at Sawmill Terrace for a medical call. Upon arrival, Officer Kalgren observed a male inside the residence laying in a bed, not conscious and not breathing. Officer Kalgren quickly got the male onto the floor and started performing life saving measures.

A pulse was regained and Freeman transported the patient “code 3” to Freeman Joplin.

Deputy Sheppard with the McDonald County Sheriffs Office was also on scene and working on the patient. Deputy Sheppard commended Officer Kalgren’s quick and thorough life saving actions.
The early and affective application of life saving measures was crucial. Without the quick actions of Officer Kalgren, a possible fatality could have been the outcome.

Officer Kalgren’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of law enforcement services and reflect distinct credit upon himself and the Goodman Police Department.

Please continue praying for the family as the patient remains in ICU. We are praying for a full recovery.
We would like to thank the McDonald County 911 center, MCSO Deputy Sheppard, Freeman Ambulance Service, and GFD. Each and every one of you played a key role

Carl Junction High School also victimized by "swatting" hoax

(From the Carl Junction Police Department)

Today, Monday, March 27th, 2023 at 2:10 p.m., our department received a call stating that a shooting was occurring at the Carl Junction High School.

Our officers responded, and one of our school resource officers was on scene when the call was given out. He advised the school administration to activate the "shelter in place" procedure, which activates the High School and Junior High. The school resource officer proceeded through both schools as trained to do, and determined that there was no active shooter threat.

We have been advised that several other area departments received the same calls about school shootings in their jurisdictions, all of which turned out to be fake calls known as "swatting." These prank calls are happening across the country.

If you have any information about this incident, please contact the Carl Junction Police Department at 417-649-7070.

Carthage High School goes under lockdown due to "swatting" hoax

(From Carthage R-9 School District)

At 2:10 pm, Carthage High School went into lockdown per CPD request. The Carthage High School was a victim of a “swatting” call.

Officers have confirmed that there is no threat to Carthage High School. No students or staff were injured during this false alarm. Thank you for your patience.

No shooting hoax at Webb City Schools, but officials take time to reassure parents

(From Webb City R-7 School District)

We wanted to take a moment to update you regarding a situation that has been taking place in school districts across the country that unfortunately occurred in multiple schools throughout Missouri today.

Today, many school districts across Missouri were affected by false reports of an active shooter on their campuses.

From what we understand, schools and local law enforcement agencies have received internet-based phone calls with these threats, which turn out to be unsubstantiated. It appears to be part of a hoax known as “swatting."

While Webb City School District has not experienced this issue directly, we know that many of our families may be understandably concerned about school safety.

Please know that our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We take any and all reports of potential threats seriously, and we are making every effort to maintain an environment where students and staff feel safe.

As always, we work closely with local law enforcement to assist in these situations and we encourage our students, staff, and community to report anything that could constitute a threat to school safety.
