Groundbreaking set for Joplin Training Center Tower

(From City of Joplin)

Joplin City officials, Joplin Fire Chief and members of the Joplin Fire and Police Departments invite the public to attend a Ground Breaking ceremony for the Training Tower being erected as part of the Public Safety Training Center (PSTC). The Ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, January 6 with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. The Training Tower is located on the City property along Highway 171, located just south of the former airport terminal.

The four-story training tower provides realistic training for both fire and police personnel, and is part of the first phase of a two-phase development for the Public Safety Training Center. Phase I also included the temporary Training Center located in the former airport terminal on Dennis Weaver Boulevard, which opened in fall 2013. With 5,000 square feet, the training center provides classrooms and office space for training personnel in both fire suppression and law enforcement fields.

More information about the Training Tower and its amenities will be provided at the event.

Directions to Ground Breaking Site:
To reach the site for the Ground Breaking, please go to roundabout at Stone’s Corner, North Hwy 43, turn east to Swede Lane; turn south on Swede and go to the gate. Site will be located on the west side of Swede Lane. Please dress accordingly, as event will be held outdoors. Weather conditions will be variable, and ground could be wet and muddy.

City of Joplin announces dropoff spots for Christmas trees

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin will have three collection points for discarded, natural (live) Christmas trees starting December 26 and running through January 31. Bring your tree, completely stripped of all decorations, and place it near the “Christmas Tree” drop-off sign posted at one of the following locations: Humphrey Park on Utica Street in the Royal Heights area; the parking lot on the southwest corner in McIndoe Park at Glendale Road and Jackson Avenue; and the Public Works Center at 1301 West 2nd Street.

People are welcome to pick up the discarded trees for use in establishing fish habitat. The remaining trees will eventually be chipped up with other tree limbs and the resulting wood chips will be made available to the public. Look for wood chip giveaways on the City’s web site at www.joplinmo.org, or by calling the Recycling Department at 417-624-0820, extension 501.

Sheriff's Department holds open house for new jail pod

(From the Jasper County Sheriff's Department)

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office had an open house at the jail, 405 E. 5th Street, in Carthage, Monday, December 22 to mark the opening of a new jail pod.

This remodel project has been underway for the past six months and will add an additional 20 beds to
the jail. This dormitory-style housing unit will be opened to begin housing inmates in the following week. This remodel project was undertaken so that we could take advantage of previous underutilized
areas within the secure areas of the jail.

James R. Spradling Center to be dedicated Friday at MSSU

(From Southern News Service)

A dedication ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, for the James R. Spradling Center for Law & Politics – a valuable resource for the legal profession, politicians and students at Missouri Southern State University

The center opened during the fall semester, said Dr. Richard Miller, dean of the School of Arts & Sciences.

“It’s an attempt for the university to reach out and provide services to the legal and political communities,” he said.

“Ultimately, we want to provide opportunities for students to engage with those communities as well.”

Miller said that the center will be able to provide continuing legal education, which attorneys require for their bar license. The center will furnish polling services for the political community as well as the opportunity to host roundtable discussions and town hall-style meetings. It will also host the university’s Mock Trial and legislative intern programs.

The center is named for Spradling, a longtime Carthage attorney and former director of the Missouri Department of Revenue. Appointed by then-Missouri Governor Christopher "Kit" Bond, he served from 1973-76 in the position. He also served as Carthage Municipal Judge and in civic posts including president of the Carthage YMCA and Carthage Park Board. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Missouri Southern.

JoAnna Derfelt, associate professor of political science, is the center’s director; Dr. Nicholas Nicoletti, associate professor of political science, is assistant director.

The dedication has been made possible by a grant from the Helen S. Boylan Foundation.

City of Joplin cancels limb dropoff for December

(From the City of Joplin)

The City has canceled the routine third Saturday tree limb and brush drop-off for this month, December 20, due to holiday season activities and anticipated low participation. Earlier this year, the City of Joplin began offering residents an opportunity to drop off tree limbs at a designated site along North Schifferdecker Avenue on the third Saturday of each month.

The City will announce the status of the January drop off shortly before January 17.

Joplin residents needing this service before January should note that the City’s residential trash service through Republic Services allows yard waste removal on their regular trash pick-up day. Limbs must be cut to a maximum of four (4) feet and bundled. Bundles shall be no heavier than 50 pounds. The diameter of each tree limb shall be no larger than four (4) inches.

Joplin Police offer tips to stop mail theft

(From the Joplin Police Department)

The Joplin Police Department has recently taken several reports of mail and other parcels being stolen from residences. The reports have indicated that mail is being taken from mailboxes in
residential areas and that packages that are left at residences have also been taken.

We would like to remind everyone of some helpful hints to try and prevent your mail or other
packages from being tampered with.

 Pick up your mail promptly after delivery. Don’t leave it in your mailbox overnight. If you're expecting checks, credit cards, or other negotiable items, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail.

 If you don't receive a check or other valuable mail you're expecting, contact the issuing agency immediately.

 If you change your address, immediately notify your Post Office and anyone with whom you do business via the mail.

 Don’t send cash in the mail.

 Tell your Post Office when you’ll be out of town, so they can hold your mail until you return.

 Consider starting a neighborhood watch program. By exchanging work and vacation schedules with trusted friends and neighbors, you can watch each other's mailboxes (as well as homes).

 Consult with your local Postmaster for the most up-to-date regulations on mailboxes, including the availability of locked centralized or curbside mailboxes.

 Most parcel carriers such as Fed-Ex and UPS allow for special instructions to be left whenever a package is being delivered. This could include having them place your package in a hidden place at your residence.

 Consider having your package delivered to someone that you trust if you know that you will not be home whenever the package is to be delivered.

If anyone has any information about any of these thefts, please contact the Joplin Police Department. You can contact us via phone at 417-623-3131, on our web page at www.joplinpolice.org, or on our Facebook page at www.facebook/JoplinPD .

Holiday train coming to Joplin

(From City of Joplin)

The Kansas City Southern’s Holiday Express train is coming to Joplin on Monday, December 15. The six-car train will bring Santa Claus for a visit with kids, and will pull into the Joplin Union Depot, 201 North Main Street, around 4 p.m. They will open to the public shortly after their arrival, and remain open until 8:30 p.m. or until Santa has seen all the children attending this event.

The Holiday Express is complete with cheerful displays, lights and music. Children can climb aboard the train, visit with Santa and receive a bag of seasonal goodies. This event is free and open to the public. Additionally, KCS will make a donation to the local Salvation Army during their visit.

To access the Union Depot, the public should enter from “B” and North Main Street.
According to Kansas City Southern’s website, the Holiday Express train is led by KCS’ Southern Belle business train, and includes a smiling tank car “Rudy”; a flatcar carrying Santa’s sleigh, reindeer and a miniature village; a ginger bread boxcar; the elves’ workshop; the reindeer stable; and a little red caboose.

The Holiday Express was created in 2001 after volunteers dedicated over 8,000 hours to the rigorous transformation of the retired rail cars. Festive music and lights complete the package.
The Holiday Express train was built on the tradition of a Santa Train, which ran on a railroad purchased by KCS in 1997. The former Santa Train made stops in small towns from East St. Louis, Ill. to Blue Springs, Mo. In 2000, KCS employees noticed that the Santa Train was the only Christmas some kids had, and that some did not even have essential items like coats, hats and gloves. KCS employees were so touched that they committed to elevating the project to the experience that communities throughout KCS' U.S. service area enjoy today.

"When you do the math, the sale total was $1,505,150. This represents quite an added value for the 10 or 12 months during which the heifers were being developed under the SMS requirements," said Eldon Cole, livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

The heifers in this sale were valued at around $855 per head one year ago as feeder heifers. The evening's top heifers brought $3700.

John Wheeler, Marionville had two groups totaling 14 head sell for that amount. The buyers were Gray Oaks Ranch, Wagoner, OK and Son Wilmoth, Mt. Vernon. The heifers were black baldies and black mottled faced and were carrying the artificial insemination service of an Angus, KCF Bennett Absolute. Wheeler's 44 heifers topped the overall average at $3417.

The second high average for the night went to Bart Renkoski, Purdy. Those eight heifers sold for $3219 and were Angus-Gelbvieh crosses AI bred to the Angus bull GAR Prophet and natural service by a Balancer cleanup bull.

Close behind in the average was Goodnight Angus, Carthage. Their six heifers brought $3217 per head.

There were 112 registered buyers and 56 were successful bidders. Heifers stayed mostly in the southwest corner of Missouri but 32 went to Oklahoma, 31 went to Arkansas and 4 landed in Kentucky. As usual, repeat buyers were very active with 266 heifers taken home by them.

There were 29 consignors and five were first-timers. Consignments ranged from two to 120 head. Twelve consignors averaged $3000 or more per head on their heifers.

Most of the heifers were commercial with a pronounced Angus influence. The 315 straight black heifers averaged $2800. The 145 black baldy and black mottled faced heifers sold well all evening with a $3108 average. There were only 57 red and red white-faced heifers and they averaged $2831.

The AI bred heifers brought $123 more per head than the natural service heifers.

This was the 31st SMS sale in southwest Missouri sponsored by Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifers, Inc.

The previous high number of heifers sold was 387 head in the sale held November 1998. Since the first sale in 1997, a total of 7,977 heifers have sold for $11,088,057 at an average of $1,390 per head.

The next SMS sale in southwest Missouri will be at Joplin Regional on May 15. Those heifers are already enrolled in the program and will calve next fall.

"Persons wishing to participate in the November 2015 sale should contact their University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist to learn more about the strict protocol for this value-added program that incorporates technology in heifer development programs," said Cole.
