Neosho man's body found in well near Seneca, Joplin man arrested for murder

(From the Joplin Police Department)

The Joplin Police Department was recently notified by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office of a death investigation that had possibly originated within the City of Joplin.

After further investigation and collaboration with Newton County authorities, it was determined that on March 18th, 2022, there was a verbal altercation at 2502 E. Vandalia Street between two individuals over the purchase of a vehicle.

During the disagreement, the suspect, who has been identified as Damyon D. Fisher, age 40 of Joplin, retrieved a handgun from his waistband and shot the victim in the back as he was fleeing. Fisher and an accomplice then disposed of the victim's body by burying it in a well at an address in Newton County, Missouri.

The victim's body was recovered from the well on April 27th, 2022. The victim has been tentatively identified as Scotty J. Roller, age 36, of Neosho, Missouri, however an official autopsy is pending.

Roller had been previously reported as a missing person to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

On the afternoon of April 27th, Detectives with the Joplin Police Department located and arrested Fisher during a traffic stop and transported him to the Joplin Police Department. He remains in custody in the Joplin City Jail.

Charges have been submitted to the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for the charge of Murder in the 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action.

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On Friday, April 22nd, 2022 the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center was notified of a vehicle crash near 35th Street and south Main Street.

Officers responded to the crash scene and the initial investigation showed that a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country minivan was traveling southbound on Main Street in the outside lane.

The van sideswiped a 2006 Ford Mustang that was southbound in the inside lane. The van then veered off of the right side of the roadway, striking a curb, a sign and colliding with a guard rail before traveling down an embankment.

The driver of the van, who has been identified as Arajuana A. Hart-Hudson, age 48 of Quapaw, Oklahoma, was transported to Mercy Hospital but was pronounced deceased.

From information gained in the investigation, it is believed that Hart-Hudson suffered a medical emergency while driving, which led to the vehicle crash and her death. Next of kin has been notified.

We provide immunizations for many insurances, the uninsured or underinsured, and those with Medicaid/Managed Care.

The Joplin Health Department has available all vaccinations that are recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) through the Vaccines for Children program. We have all of the vaccines required for entry into kindergarten.

We urge you to obtain vaccinations now before the Kindergarten round-up begins. Call now to schedule an appointment.

Immunizations will be given at the upper-level entrance (west side) of the Joplin Health Department, 321 E. Fourth Street. Please note that a parent/guardian ID and the child’s insurance information and immunization record are required, so bring them with you to the clinic.

Route 97 to close south of Lockwood

(From MODOT)

Route 97 to CLOSE Between Routes NN & 96 Week of May 2 to Replace Four Bridges

Contractor crews will CLOSE Missouri Route 97 between Lawrence County Route NN and Missouri Route 96 south of Lockwood to replace four (4) bridges beginning the week of May 2, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Beginning with the bridge over Dry Branch north of Route YY, contractor crews will remove and replace three existing box bridges and one single-lane bridge with new structures as well as adding new object markers at the ends of the bridges.

These are the impacted bridges on Route 97:
Over Dry Branch – Closed between Lawrence County Road 2015 and Route YY.
Over Wilder Branch – Closed between Lawrence County roads 2030 and 2040.
Over North White Oak Creek – Closed between Lawrence County roads 2010 and 2015.
Over South White Oak Creek – Closed between Lawrence County roads 2040 and 2050.

These four (4) structures will be replaced one at a time to allow for local access, but Route 97 will remain closed to through traffic until all four structures are completed.

Traffic Impacts

Route 97 will be CLOSED between Lawrence County roads 2010 and 2015, north of Route 96

Drivers will have access to driveways and entrances on either end of the work zone, but will not be allowed to drive through the work zone

Drivers will be directed to a signed detour using U.S. Route 160, Missouri Route 39 and Missouri Route 96. All Route 97 closures will use this same detour.

Route 97 will be CLOSED until late November 2022

Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zone

Drivers should consider alternate routes during the project

Check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for road closings/traffic impacts

This work is part of a three-year project to improve 25 bridges within 15 miles of I-44 across the Southwest District. Of the 25 bridges in the project, known as the I-44 Corridor Bridge Bundle, seven (7) are mainline I-44 bridges, five (5) are I-44 overpass bridges and the remaining bridges are on adjacent routes over various features. Sixteen (16) bridges will be replaced and nine (9) bridges will receive major rehabilitation work.

All work in 2022 will be in Lawrence County, where crews will replace five (5) bridges and rehabilitate four (4) others.

Weather and/or construction delays could alter the work schedule.

Crowder College Speech and Debate concludes successful season

(From Crowder Colleg)

The Crowder College Speech and Debate Team has had one of the best competitive seasons in recent history capping the season with top community college honors at the National Forensic Association National Tournament.

"Being ranked as the top community college in the nation for the first time is a tremendous honor and a wonderful way to end an amazing season,” stated Kristen Stout, Speech and Debate Team Coach/Speech Instructor.

Over the course of the last two semesters, the team has competed in over 100 rounds of competition in 12 distinct events before participating in the national competition.

“At roughly an hour a piece, these students have spent over 130 hours in competition alone. Add to that the countless hours of practice and travel and it becomes clear that these honors are a result of intense dedication on the part of the students”, said Stout.

College speech and debate is not divided by division or collegiate level. “With the exception of Phi Ro Pi nationals, Crowder students compete against primarily 4-year universities,” commented Stout. “They compete against, and often beat, the best! This year alone, we have competed against students from AT LEAST 30 states”. The following is a summary of the accomplishments of the team.

Regular Season tournaments:

Online Asynchronous Tournament Series (OATS) - The OATS tournament series, started as a result of Covid-19 travel restrictions, allows students to record their events and have them judged asynchronously.

Each competition required original recordings and had a unique set of competitors as a result, our students competed against hundreds of other students from all over the country and received invaluable feedback that prepared them for live competitions.
