Riverton woman sentenced to eight years on meth, child endangerment charges

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

Shayna Nichole Cowgill-Wittenmyer, 37, of Riverton, was handed down an 8-year prison term last week in Cherokee County District Court after pleading to Possessing Meth with Intent to Distribute and Aggravated Child Endangerment.

The charges stem from an August 2018 raid conducted by Cherokee County Sheriff's Investigators on Cowgill-Wittenmyer's residence, where they discovered a methamphetamine lab along with children in the home.

In September, 2022, a second suspect arrested at the time of the raid, Adam C. Evans, was sentenced to 104 months imprisonment.

CWD deer management planned at Prairie State Park

(From Missouri State Parks)

Missouri Department of Conservation officials found a CWD-positive deer during firearms season on private land near Prairie State Park. In an effort to keep the disease from spreading, MDC is planning a controlled culling of deer within the park.

Chronic wasting disease, or CWD, is a fatal, neurological illness that affects white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk and moose. This contagious disease can be transmitted freely within and among deer populations.

Controlled culling will begin Feb. 1 and continue throughout the month. Portions of the park may be closed and visitors should check the Park and Site Status Map at modnr.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0cc1b6513d6e407694aede7b7bdbde93 before visiting.

Based on available scientific information, MDC officials said they believe localized removal of deer through targeted culling is an effective means to minimize the spread of CWD and reduce the rate the disease spreads through the deer population.

Removing a greater number of potentially infected deer from the population can slow disease growth rates and minimize the amount of CWD contamination in the environment. Removing additional deer from where CWD has been detected can also help reduce disease transmission within the local population. Limiting population reductions only to areas where CWD is present helps reduce impacts to populations in the surround areas.

As a reminder, hunting is prohibited in state parks, except for specially designated hunts and culling operations. For inquiries about CWD culling, contact MDC at 417-209-6876. For information on trail closures, call the park office at 417-843-6711 or visit the website. Prairie State Park is located at 128 NW 150th Lane in Mindenmines.

Emergency road conditions in place for Joplin

(From the Joplin Police Department)

We are currently working several crashes due to slick roads to include crashes on I-44 and a car that reportedly hit building. Please be aware if you are traveling tonight that the roads are slick.

Due to the inclement weather, the Joplin Police Department has initiated emergency road conditions.

Under these conditions, the department asks all drivers to only venture out if it is absolutely necessary. If you are involved in a traffic crash and no one is injured, the drivers are to exchange information including names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance companies, and policy numbers. Drivers should also move their vehicles off of the roadway as soon as possible.

Officers will only respond to any crash involving injuries or where one of the drivers leaves the scene without exchanging information.

Drivers who are involved in a non-injury crash during the inclement weather and would like to complete a report may come to the Joplin Police Department after the weather conditions improve and complete a form. You may prefer to obtain the same form online at your convenience at http://dor.mo.gov/forms/1140.pdf.

Woman arrested for assaulting three Parsons police officers

(From the Parsons Police Department)

On January 27, 2023 at approximately 4 am, K-9 Officer Christian Smith and Officer Luke Schibi were on patrol and observed Melissa Sue Kuffler, 52 years old of Parsons, standing outside of a residence in the 3100 block of Main Street.

Officers knew Kuffler had multiple warrants for her arrest through the Labette County District Court. Officers Smith and Schibi stopped to make contact with Kuffler and make the arrest on the valid arrest warrants.

Kuffler fled into a residence after being confronted by the officers. Officers pursued Kuffler and were able to take her into custody.

During the arrest, Kuffler punched and spat on the two officers. While being processed into the jail, Kuffler continued her behavior and struck another officer during the processing phase.

Kuffler was arrested on a Felony Aggravated Failure to Appear and a Failure to Appear warrant. As well as new charges of Felony Interference with Law Enforcement, and three counts of Felony Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer.

Patrol Lieutenant Kyle Wiford said, “I am glad that our officers were able to take Kuffler into custody for her outstanding warrants. I am very displeased with the behavior, disrespect and combative nature Kuffler displayed towards our officers.

"The warrants for her arrest for were failure to appear on two cases, which is two failures on her part, not on the part of our officers. I hope that the courts revoke her bonds on all her pending case since the current arrest and charges would be a violation of any prior release conditions she had promised to abide by.

"If she cannot respect the courts to appear for court and cannot control her combativeness when being arrested for her failure to appear, then the Labette County Jail is a safe and secure location for her to stay.”

Dennis Dodd, Deputy Chief of Police said, “this is an example of just good proactive policing by tenacious and self-motivated officers cleaning up the city streets in the dark of the night.”

“This is another great example of Parsons Police Officers proactively trying to get wanted persons and criminal off the streets of Parsons, even while many of us are at home and asleep. Quality policing is 24/7 and that is what our officers strive for on a daily basis,” said Chief Robert Spinks.

“It reminds me of the old TV police series of the 1970’s catchphrase, Don't do the crime if you can't do the time."

This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to “See It, Hear It, Report It.” If anyone has any further information on this incident or any other criminal activity, please contact the Parsons Police Department at 421-7060 or call the Tip Line at 421-7057 or email at tips@parsonspd.com.

Badge pinning ceremony held for three new Joplin Police officers

(From the Joplin Police Department)

The culmination of training and advancement by officers at the Joplin Police Department is something that is earned and not given.

As an agency, we recognize this accomplishment through a badge pinning ceremony where officers are given specific recognition, presented their newly earned badge, and afforded the opportunity to have it pinned on their uniform by a spouse, friend, family member or other loved one.

Additionally, our department chaplains also provide a great service to our officers and bestow each with a custom gift to help guide them through their careers. This afternoon we proudly recognized three officers who have successfully completed all of their training requirements and are now full-fledged  Police Officers.

We also recognized the recent promotion of one officer to the rank of Corporal. Those recognized were Officer Joshua Daniel, Officer Andrew Fowler, Officer Dalton Kirkland, and Corporal Jeffery Flener.

Please join us in congratulating these officers on their achievements! We know they will be terrific representatives of the Joplin Police Department as they serve our great community.
