Roy Blunt on Trump immigration order: Our top priority should be to keep America safe

Senator Roy Blunt issued the following statement on President Donald Trump's executive order on immigration:

“He (President Trump) is doing what he told the American people he would do. I would not support a travel ban on Muslims; I do support increased vetting on people applying to travel from countries with extensive terrorist ties or activity. These seven countries meet that standard. Our top priority should be to keep Americans safe.”

Residents in Jasper Fire Protection District should see insurance rates drop

(From the Jasper Fire Protection District)

An announcement for the property owners in the Jasper Fire Protection District

You supported us just over a year ago by voting in the district and now we are working to return the support. I am pleased to announce that after several years of hard work by our firefighters and the support of the community that our ISO rating will drop to a class 6. This is a large drop for our community which was classified for years as a class 8B/9. This new classification will take effect on February 1st, 2017. This should result in a savings on your insurance for both residential and commercial property.

This rating is evaluated over several years’ worth of departmental records by ISO (Insurance Services Organization) which rates fire department capabilities on several items such as:

firefighter training
number of personnel
amount of water carried on vehicles
pumping capacity
equipment carried on vehicles
equipment test records
our response to structure fires
automatic and mutual aid
city water supply
rural water supply
dispatching capabilities
type of buildings within the district

These are just a few of the things that figure into the rating. While some things cannot be controlled by the district, we have vastly improved on others which has made the difference. Also the continuing support of the Missouri Department of Conservation has helped make this possible.

The new rating is for residents within 5 miles of the fire station. Anyone outside the 5 miles will remain as is for now. The firefighters and board of directors are currently looking at ways to improve the rating for the rest of the district.

You may need to contact your insurance company after February 1st to have the new rating take effect.

With your continued support we could potentially be able to lower the rating more in the future.

J.R. Good, District Chief

Sprinkler system contains fire at Webb City Health and Rehab

(From the Webb City Fire Department)

On January 25, 2017, at 10:49 p.m., the Webb City Fire Department received a call of an audible fire alarm at Webb City Health and Rehab located at 2077 Stadium drive.

Fire crews arrived to find a one-story structure with smoke at the rear of the building. The source of the alarm was determined to be coming from the laundry room.

Firefighters made entry into the building to conduct a search for occupants in the half that contained the laundry room. It was determined that the occupants had already been evacuated to a safe area by the staff of the facility.

The fire was contained to the laundry room by the activation of one sprinkler head, keeping the fire from spreading.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire very quickly and started overhaul operation to contain excess water flow.

The cause of the fire was determined to be unintentional and in the area of a wall heater unit.

The Webb City Police Department, METS Ambulance, and the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office responded and asisted firefighters as needed. We would like to commend the staff of the facility for their quick and professional action in evacuating the occupants of the affected hall. It is because of their actions, and the actions of the fire sprinkler system that there were no injuries during this event.

Reception planned for longtime Lockwood teachers' 50th wedding anniversary

A reception for  longtime Lockwood High School teachers Larry and Melinda Dixon 50th wedding anniversary will be held Saturday. Jan 28, 2 to 4 pm at First Baptist Church, Lockwood, Fellowship Hall. Friends and family are invited.

After meeting over a game of cards in the student union at Pittsburg State University as freshmen in 1965, Larry and Melinda (Peebles) Dixon married two years later and have continued to be partners in life for 50 years.

Melinda grew up in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Harry (HAP) Peebles, a country music promoter across the Midwest, and Phyllis Peebles, a registered nurse. Larry grew up in Heavener, Oklahoma, the son of railroad engineer, Carl, and Francis Dixon. Both chose Pittsburg State University, following older siblings – Jim Dixon and Carol Peebles.

The couple were married Jan. 25, 1967, in Pittsburg State's Timmon's chapel, after finishing finals the day before. The ceremony was officiated by Bro. Albert Moore, an old family friend. Best men were Bobby Jack Duncan and Bob Hall and maids of honor were Nancy Thornhill and Margie Alger. Melinda’s dream was and became teaching.

Melinda’s first year of teaching, after graduating with two bachelor’s degrees in history and Spanish, was at Lockwood High School in the fall of 1968, where she taught Spanish, American and Missouri history, sociology and psychology. She taught at Lockwood High School for another 43 years, taking off one year to work on her Master's degree while Larry was deployed overseas.

In the late 1970s, she also took on the role as part-time high school counselor. In the community, Melinda was involved with teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School classes at First Baptist Church, as well as serving as Sunday school superintendent for 15 years. She served nearly 20 years as president of the local chapter of the women educator’s sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, being the first Lockwood teacher to join in 1976.

Melinda dedicated herself to Lockwood’s Scholars Bowl (academic) program, which began only as a Monett radio program quiz tournament once or twice a year in 1972. By 1975, she had the shop teacher build a set of wooden buzzer boxes and was traveling with a team to nearby tournaments.

In 1977, with the help of Larry, she instigated the Lockwood Invitational Tournament, which became one of the premier academic tournaments of the area. In 1985 she drafted the by-laws for the original Midwest Conference Scholar’s Bowl tournament and soon after, she and Larry started L&M Question Service writing tournament questions. They also became involved with the Missouri Academic Coaches Association in the early 1990s, being part of the organizing for academic teams to fall under the Missouri State High School Activities Association.

Larry and Melinda then, in conjunction with Lamar's academic coach, created the Mind Games tournament in 1993 One of the largest annual tournaments ever in southwest Missouri it averaged 64 teams participating (with a high of 78) until its demise in 2012 with Melinda's retirement. Melinda was honored with the Carol Farmer Founder’s Award from the state coaches’ association in 1997 and served as the organization’s president in 2000. Her academic teams won over 1600 hundred games with her as coach finishing first in over 60 tournaments with teams finishing 2nd, two 3rds, and a 4th in state tournament competition.

In 2013, she was recognized through the University of Missouri-Columbia Missouri Scholar’s Academy as an Outstanding Teacher, nominated by former student John Barber.

Larry earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from PSU and received his commission as a second lieutenant through the ROTC program. He attended signal corps officer basic at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, and then was assigned as communications officer to a Pershing Missile Battalion at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1969. He was then deployed to Vietnam to the 39th Signal Battalion as the Battalion Wire Officer and later Battalion Adjutant at a base called “Plantation” between Long Bihn and Bihn Hoa. As wire officer, he was responsible for all of south central South Vietnam's military telephone lines and, later, as adjutant for the entire battalion's administration. Before he was sent home in 1971, he was awarded the bronze star for service.

Upon his separation from service he went to work for Eagle Pitcher Industry as a power systems engineer. During his three years there his assignments included analysis of NASA's Lunar Rover's batteries, development of batteries for the Space Shuttle, and various missile battery systems for the defense department including the Tomahawk cruise missile. He left that position to be able to spend more time with his wife and new daughter. He taught science at Miller High School before being hired at Lockwood High School, where he taught full-time until 2001 and then continued part time for another 10 years. He was named a Joplin Globe Distinguished Educator in 1993 after being nominated by former student Justin Ogden, who is now an orthopedic surgeon in Lamar.

In the Lockwood community, Larry continues to teach Sunday school at First Baptist Church. He previously has served on the city’s Park Board and currently is a member of the Library Board. Larry and Melinda were the grand marshals of the 2015 Lockwood September Days, as representatives of teachers in the community. They enjoy hearing updates from their former students and have taken advantage of their retirement to spend more time with family and growing a vegetable garden. They also continue to write questions for academic tournaments and provide occasional tutoring for local youth.

Neosho Area Fire Protection District receives $15,396 grant

(From the Neosho Area Fire Protection District)

The Neosho Area Fire Protection District was recently awarded $15,396 in grant funding from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. The grant funding was used for the purchase of AED units, Pulse Ox meters and a Rad57 handheld CO monitor.

We are very fortunate to have been awarded this life saving equipment from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. This equipment will help us improve our life saving capabilities for the citizens and visitors in the Neosho area. It is our hope that having these devises will help ensure a life can be saved, there are too many stories of lives being lost because these devices were not readily available. Of the calls we make, approximately 65% are medical in nature. Having the proper equipment on scene of a medical call can make a difference in the outcome for all involved.

The Neosho Area Fire Protection District operates from three stations within the 93 square mile district in south central Newton County. Through a contract with the City of Neosho Fire Department, all district equipment and apparatus provided by the District is available for use in the entire area, including the City proper. Manning is provided by the City with two stations manned full time and one unmanned station.

The Neosho Area Fire Protection District would like to thank the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation for selecting us to receive this grant. Their support to local first responders is a model examble of how we should all give back to our fellow brothers and sisters in our communities.

In 2005, the Firehouse Subs founders established the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation with the mission of providing funding, life-saving equipment, and educational opportunities to first-responders and public safety organizations. Through the non-profit 501(c)(3), Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has given more than $24 million to hometown heroes in 46 states, Puerto Rico and Canada.
