Joplin Public Library changes to fine-free format

(From the Joplin Public Library)

Beginning Wednesday, August 1, 2018, Joplin Public Library patrons can borrow items from JPL without accruing overdue fines. In addition, JPL will erase overdue fines patrons currently owe.

Library Director Jacque Gage noted that this change should increase patrons’ access to the more than 120,000 items in the library collection.

Patrons who have items that are lost, damaged, or simply not returned will still owe for those items, plus a non-refundable administration fee. If an account has to be referred to a collection agency to get items returned, a collection agency fee will also be charged.

Items received through interlibrary loan (ILL) will continue to accrue overdue fines because these come from the lending library. Fees will also apply when items are placed on special hold but not picked up.

“I hope this move will allow more people to utilize the library,” said Gage, “as well as allow us to reconnect with former patrons who have not yet been able to enjoy the new library facility due to overdue fines. This will give a clean slate for those who just managed to return materials late.”

Please contact Joplin Public Library at 417-623-7953 for more information about this new policy.

Gravestone installed for Ryder Potts, five months, after drive spearheaded by Newton County deputy

(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)

Today the gravestone for Ryder Jay Potts was installed at the cemetery. This is the stone we asked for community donations in a post on May 3rd.

The following is from the Deputy who championed the project:
(he wished to remain nameless)

“I wanted to say a very special thank you to Clark Funeral Homes of Neosho who were so wonderful to work with all the way through this. A member of their staff went out of her way; aiding me by providing dual, matching, photocopies of transactions and itemized deposit summaries to help ensure that donations were being handled responsibly.

Another member of Clark's staff made a trip out her way to the Newton County Sheriff's Office to meet with Ryder's family to help assist them with selecting the design of the grave marker which couldn't have turned out more beautifully.

I want to thank Sheriff Jennings for allowing us to use the Newton County Sheriff's Office Facebook page to help raise funds; without this tool, we wouldn't have accomplished our goal.

I also want to thank each and every one of you gracious people who made a donation. Whether you pulled your soda change from your pocket and placed it into a donations bucket or mailed a large check, you good Samaratins made this happen. Your selflessness will certainly pay off in Heavenly rewards.

I have been asked many times by several people why I was doing this. That is a question I had much trouble answering the first few times; I really had no reason. It was just the right thing to do. At some point, it occurred to me that it is okay not to have a reason to do the right thing. God put me in a position to see the saddest of situations and with that God also provided me a platform to be heard. Both of those are major reasons that this was possible. We all know someone who needs help in some way. Each one of us also has a platform to be heard.

I would like to challenge every person that reads this to use your platform and share an act of kindness with someone in their time of need within the next thirty days. When asked why, unashamedly say that ‘it is the right thing to do.’”

Seneca Police Department working on code violations

(From the Seneca Police Department)

The Seneca Police Department has been working very diligently on Code Violations.

For those people who are not familiar with these violations they consist of: abandoned homes, tall grass, unlicensed vehicles (basically trashy yards). To this date we have "red tagged" over 100 different homes for these violations. We have also condemned four different homes that have been torn down within the last year. We are really trying to make the town more presentable.

If anyone has a complaint about these type of properties please fill free to contact the Police Department or send us a message on FB. We always appreciate any help we can get from the community.

Some of the homes we have written citations too are still in the court process but we are working with the owners to rectify the issues. If there is a home or property in your neighborhood that is concerning please contact the Police Department, City Hall or Public Works. If we are already working on it we will let you know and if it is not on our list we will start the process. Thanks So Much.

So much, in fact, that it’s nearly impossible to take advantage of all the available opportunities. C2C is passionate about increasing audience for the Joplin arts and cultural community by making these opportunities more accessible to both residents and visitors. We hope this arts roundtable educates the public about upcoming events, encourages collaboration between participating organizations, and informs the media about potential stories.”

As in previous years, C2C will create audio recordings of each organization’s presentation and make it available online. Visit 2017’s page on the C2C website here:

Work on 20th Street intersections creates lane shifts, closures

(From the City of Joplin)

Intersection work along 20th Street to install decorative concrete to the areas begins July 30. A colorized terra cotta concrete will be poured at both 20th Street intersections at Connecticut Avenue and Indiana Avenue. These will be similar to intersections along Main Street.

Starting Monday, July 30, Indiana Avenue will be closed for both northbound and southbound traffic at 20th Street. Traffic along 20th Street will experience lane shifts while road is reduced to two lanes, allowing one lane for each direction. This closure is due to decorative concrete work being completed within the intersection. The work is anticipated to take two weeks.

Work will begin on the intersection at 20th Street and Connecticut Avenue on Monday, August 6 as crews work on the radiuses of this intersection. Traffic may be reduced to one lane each direction, but both Connecticut Avenue and 20th Street will remain open during this week.

Starting Monday, August 13, the intersection at 20th Street and Connecticut Avenue will be closed to traffic traveling in both directions. Traffic will be detoured around this intersection. The work on this phase of the intersection is anticipated to take three weeks.

This work is one of the last phases of the projects. The recently laid asphalt pavement along 20th Street had to cure prior to this installation. City engineers have noted that placing colorized terra cotta concrete in the crosswalks is an effective method to alert drivers to pedestrians, without a lot of added cost. D&E Plumbing is the contractor on this project.

Motorists are urged to find an alternate route during this time. Signage will be placed to alert traffic to the 20th Street intersections of Connecticut Avenue and Indiana Avenue. This project is funded through the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery program from HUD.

To learn more about other recovery projects, and to track their progress, the public can access a dashboard with all projects listed along with the locations, scope of work, costs and timelines by going to http://Joplingis.org/Dashboard .

The City appreciates your patience during the construction work.

MSSU graduate Ashli Turner to compete in Miss Black USA Pageant

(From Southern News Service)

One of Ashli Turner’s goals is to be a voice for education when she takes the stage as Missouri’s representative during the 2018 Miss Black USA pageant, set for Aug. 11-12 in Washington, D.C.

Turner, who graduated from Missouri Southern’s criminal justice program in 2012, says it’s an issue that she takes very seriously.

“I was the first in my family to graduate from college,” says Turner. “In urban communities, the value in getting an education isn’t always recognized. Both of my parents dropped out of high school, so going to college is a big deal when you come from that kind of environment. It takes hard work and commitment. I want to use this platform to be the best example I could be for the teens I mentor and others.”

The Kansas City native will fly to the nation’s capital several days early to participate in a number of appearances, including a visit with state delegates and a trip to the White House. The two-day pageant will consist of a talent show, an interview with a panel of judges, a series of on-stage questions and an evening gown and fitness competition.

Using her platform to tout the benefits of education comes in part from the pride she takes from her experiences at Missouri Southern.

Having lost her home in the 2011 tornado, she says members of the Criminal Justice faculty helped her through a very difficult time.

“I came to see them not just as instructors but as family,” she says. “It was going above and beyond and my love for Joplin really grew. I get offended when I see other colleges use a lion as their mascot.”

Turner says she has temporarily put her work on her master’s in criminal justice on hold, but hopes to complete it soon with a goal of applying for a position with the FBI.

“I tested for it once already but didn’t get in,” she says. “It’s very challenging to get in and become an agent, but that’s my ultimate goal.”

Her reign as Miss Black Missouri will come to an end this fall, and it has been a rewarding experience, she says. She has worked with the Show Me Shoes Foundation, which helps young girls in need go to prom in style, spoken at Kansas City-are public schools and participated in events designed to give women encouragement and confidence.

“A quote I’ve always loved says that we respond best to people we can relate to, and that’s where you make your greatest impact,” Turner says.

Joplin woman selected to serve on Rotary International finance committee

(From Southern News Service)

When Laurie Delano joined Rotary in 2011, her membership was primarily about attending meetings.

But when she retired as the chief financial officer and vice president of finance for Empire District Electric Co. in 2017, she saw the opportunity to use her experience and expertise to play a larger role within the organization.

“I noted in the Rotarian magazine last summer that Rotary International had openings for their audit and finance committee, so I applied,” Delano says. “I was honored to be chosen to serve on the finance committee.”

Delano, who graduated from Missouri Southern in 1977 with a degree in accounting, began her three-year term on the board on July 1. She joins an eight-member committee that includes representatives from the United States, Germany, England, Australia and the Philippines.

The committee advises the Rotary International Board on finances, budgets, investment policy and sustainability measures. Despite the great distance between members, she says meetings can take place online as well as face to face a few times a year at the Rotary International headquarters in Evanston, Ill.

It’s a position that is definitely in her wheelhouse. Delano worked for Empire for 24 years, and her four decades of professional experience in accounting and finances include positions with TAMKO Building Products and Lozier Corporation.

Rotary is dedicated to the idea of “service above self.” But it’s an ideal that Delano took to heart long before becoming a member.

She serves on the Crowder College Foundation Board, as a member of the Lafayette House Endowment Committee, the American Institute of CPAs and the Institute of

Management Accountants. She has also served as treasurer for the United Way and Lafayette House.

“It’s always just been in my blood, I guess,” Delano says of her drive to be of service. “My parents were always involved, especially my mother. They volunteered with 4H when we were growing up and at school activities, and my mother worked with the American Cancer Society.

“I’ve always enjoyed it. I feel like it’s my way of giving back to the community.”

She and her husband, Gene (a 1982 graduate of MSSU), live in Joplin.

Lamar man injured in one-vehicle accident

A Lamar man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 5:20 p.m. Tuesday on NW 30th Road, 10 miles northwest of Lamar.

Housel was treated for minor injuries at Cox Barton County Hospital, Lamar.
