Minutes of Previous Meeting

Minutes of the June 23rd work session and the June 26th regular meeting were approved as written and previously distributed.

Financial Reports

Mr. Wood noted the monthly cash flow statement which is the fiscal year-end report showing an anticipated bank balance as of July 31st of over $3M. Dr. Methvin said this is a much healthier balance by about $1M than this time a year ago.

Mr. Wood agreed saying various questions have already been answered regarding the regular checks written which are from June 9 to 30 and July 1 to 10, 2017. Checks in the amount of $1,851,924.85 were approved ON MOTION by Mr. Butler, seconded by Mr. Vancuren, and unanimously carried. The current fund balances and agency funds were reviewed. Mrs. Andris asked where the reserve funds reside, and Dr. Methvin said they are not in a separate account as they are “cash on hand” or deposits in current checking accounts which should be at least 15% of our operating budget at all times. Mr. Wood asked under Transport Training, “what is a ‘refresher course’?”

School vaccinations available through Joplin Health Department

(From the Joplin Health Department)

The first day of school in Joplin is August 17. Now is the perfect time to get vaccinated!

The Joplin City Health Department has vaccinations required for school and can help make sure children are prepared. If a child lives within the Joplin city limits, or is enrolled in a Joplin public or private school, the Health Department is happy to assist the family with these needs. Parents or guardians should bring in the immunization record and the staff will review it to check if the child is behind on any vaccinations.

The Health Department provides immunizations for the uninsured or underinsured, and those with Medicaid. They also accept many area insurances. Citizens are welcome to call ahead to verify coverage.

Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) is required for entry into the 8th grade. Another requirement is two doses of Meningococcal (MCV) before grade 12. Children may be denied entry into school without these mandatory immunizations.

Parents can avoid the back to school rush and call now to schedule an appointment during the regularly scheduled immunization clinics BEFORE school starts.

Immunizations will be given in the upper level entrance (West side) of the Joplin Health Department, 321 E. Fourth Street. Please note that a parent/guardian ID and the child’s Social Security Number and immunization record is required, so these should be brought to the clinic at the time of the appointment. Questions? Call 417-623-6122.

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

Just after 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 27th, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Galena Police Department executed a narcotics related search warrant at 1004 East 9th, Galena.

While searching the home, investigators seized suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Arrested at the scene were Justin Legg, 31, and 27-year-old Terry Johnson, both of the home. They are currently being held in the Cherokee County Jail on allegations of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Bond has been set at $3,000 each.

In addition to the arrests, two children, ages 3 and 6, were taken into protective custody.

According to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves, "One of the biggest concerns we've had with this case is the presence of young children in the home, and the living conditions they were subjected to."

Due to the condition of the home, following the search, the Galena Police Department took action to issue an emergency condemnation of the house.

"I'm glad we were able to remove the kids, at least on a temporary basis, so we can collaborate with other family support agencies and assist in making sure they are safe and properly cared for," concluded Groves.
