Two classes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation are being offered on Thursday, January 18, for the public. Classes will be held in Conference Room 1 of the Joplin Public Library, 1901 East 20th Street. The classes are a part of the American Heart Association’s training.

AHA Heartsaver CPR/AED is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This course trains participants to give CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Students receive a certification upon completion. Fee for the course is $50 per person.

AHA HeartCode® BLS Skills Checkoff will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 18. The course is designed for those who have already completed the online portion of the HeartCode® BLS course: https://elearning.heart.org/course/437

This is the hands-on skills session check-off to complete the certification for HeartCode® BLS. Cost is $20 per person.

Preregistration and pre-payment are required to attend either of these classes. Participants can complete these steps by going to the Joplin Parks registration website of their online catalog. Classes are listed under the Adult Programs division of the registration site. Citizens can also call the Health Department at 417-623-6122, ext. 1258 for more information.

(From KGCS)

Service to the community is a theme that connects two recent inductees into The Missouri Southern State University Regional Media Hall of Fame. And this week on Newsmakers, video documentaries recognize the honorees.

The Joplin Uplift was a Black-owned newspaper started in 1926 by Augustus and Fannie Tutt. The small, family-owned newspaper grew to serve thousands of subscribers.

The program also looks at the 40-year career of KSNF Vice President and General Manager John Hoffmann who helped launch the Golden Lion Scholarship at MSSU and supports community service by his workers. Television station staff share their impressions of Hoffmann who also reacts to receiving the award.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of December 31 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, January 6 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.
