Cherokee County Sheriff warns of scammers pretending to be law enforcement

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office has recently been made aware of scammers contacting area residents, posing as law enforcement officials.

"This scam has occurred across the country at various times over the past several years," according to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

"The way the scam works, thieves claiming to be law enforcement will contact citizens saying they have unpaid fines and failure to immediately provide payment over the phone will result in their arrest."

"Anyone who receives such a call should remember a couple of things. First, thieves may 'spoof' a phone number so it actually looks like it's coming from a local law enforcement agency. Second, members of the Sheriff's Office do not collect fines for traffic infractions or criminal acts and would not contact residents by phone demanding immediate payment for anything," concluded Sheriff Groves.

As with any time you receive a phone call from an unknown person, if they are asking for your personal information, immediately hang up.

Jasper County deputy arrests Carthage man, Pittsburg woman on warrants, locate opened mail with stolen $1,200 check

(From the Jasper County Sheriff's Office)

On June 22nd, 2021 at approximately 11:30, a Jasper County Deputy was checking a vehicle under the White Oak Bridge near State Highway 37 and Incline Rd. As the Deputy pulled behind the vehicle, he saw a male sitting in a tall grassy area and he ducked down as if to hide.

Two individuals were contacted at this location. Both had warrants and were identified as Frederick Foshag, 49, of Carthage and Heidi Masters, 49, of Pittsburg Ks.

During the investigation, the deputy found opened mail in the area where the two were sitting. There was a check located in the opened mail for over $1,200. The owner of the mail was contacted and the mail was returned.

We would remind everyone, if you happen to see anything suspicious, like individuals taking mail from multiple mailboxes, to report it.

This can help prevent items from being taken such as checks or your personal information being used for identity theft and fraud.

Remember to get involved and report crime!!

Spiva Art Gallery exhibit to offer "A Light in the Darkness"

(From Southern News Service)

A group exhibition by members of the Joplin Regional Artists Coalition (JRAC) will be featured in the Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.

“Light in the Darkness” will run Monday, June 28, through Thursday, July 22. An opening reception will be offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 9.

The theme was chosen to allow JRAC members to express how they find hope and joy after being immersed in dark times, particularly as it pertains to the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were not restricted to the subject matter, however. The hope is that the exhibit will help to lift spirits as we recover from difficult times.

The JRAC was founded by visual artists in 2010 to network and more effectively engage in cultural, economic, and educational artistic activity. The organization is not limited to Joplin artists, but encompasses the Joplin area. JRAC membership includes professional and amateur artists, art enthusiasts, and patrons of the visual arts. JRAC organizes multiple shows a year to provide members opportunities to create, show and sell their work.

Admission is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the summer.
