Crowder, author working to raise funds for Behavior Support Center

(From Crowder College)

Crowder College is working with local author Kent Allen to raise funds for the Behavior Support Center.

Allen is donating 100% of the proceeds of book sales from now through June 30 to the Center.

Saturday, January 30, at 10am the group has sponsored a “Sensory Friendly” viewing of Kung Fu Panda III at the Neosho B&B Theatre.

Sensory Friendly movies have the lights a little brighter and the volume a little lower than normal, which is conducive to autistic children.

Children and their families have been provided free tickets to the show. After a very large response the movie has been moved to a larger theatre.

A crowd of 200 is expected to attend. These students and their family are from area schools. It will provide an opportunity for the children to enjoy a movie more suited for their needs.

Cindy Branscum, Director of Institutional Advancement, Jamie Emery, Director of the BSC, and Allen (Dr. Kent Farnsworth) will be available during the viewing.

Joplin Police Chief announces retirement

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Joplin Police Chief Jason Burns announces his intention to retire from the Joplin Police Department effective March 1, 2016.

Chief Burns began his career in law enforcement in 1993 and began working with the Joplin Police Department in February 1996. Chief Burns is the first internally promoted Chief since 1986. In the past two years, total crime has been reduced 15%, equating to a reduction of 1311 individual crimes.

The Department has become accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) for the third time, receiving a certificate of Advanced Accreditation and Intelligence Led policing has been initiated.

Perhaps the most noteworthy accomplishment during his career at JPD was the development and implementation of IMPACT (Improving Methods Proactively Against Crime Trends), a model used to address crime hot spots across the City. Chief Burns states, “I owe my success to the men and women of the Joplin Police Department and could not be prouder of this entire organization”.

The Joplin Police Department wants to thank Chief Burns and his family for his service to the police department as well as the community. We wish him well in his endeavors and he will be greatly missed.

(From Southern News Service)

Southern Theatre will present “This is Our Youth” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, through Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Bud Walton Theatre on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.

In Kenneth Longeran’s play, Warren is the hero-worshipping friend of Dennis, a small-time drug dealer and son of a famous painter father and social activist mother. Warren impulsively steals $15,000 from his own father, an abusive tycoon.

When Jessica, a mixed-up prep school girl, shows up for a date, Warren takes her off, awkwardly, for a night of New York seduction. A wildly funny, bittersweet and ultimately quite moving story follows.

Directed by Tim Klein, the cast includes Cameron Lopez as Dennis Ziegler, Sean Botts as Warren Straub, and Valerie Stockton as Jessica Goldman.

Admission is free for MSSU students, faculty and staff. It is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and nonMSSU students. This production is for mature audiences only due to explicit language and adult situations.

City of Joplin to hold pre-disaster training workshops

(From the City of Joplin)

Citizens in southwest Missouri know about disasters. When Mother Nature delivers a frigid ice storm, a blasting blizzard, an impactful flood, or an extreme tornado, residents have weathered the storm, helping their family and friends affected. With these past experiences, we’ve heard the warnings: citizens fare best when they have a plan BEFORE the disaster strikes. However, many of us may have put the planning aside before it is completed, which could be problematic if something should occur in the future.

Now is the time to finish the plan with the assistance of some pre-disaster training workshops. The City of Joplin has partnered with St. Bernard Project, the non-profit that worked with Rebuild Joplin during the recovery from the 2011 tornado, and is offering several sessions for both homeowners and businesses.

The hour-long sessions will discuss the process of making an emergency plan, documents needed following a disaster, how to file an insurance claim, along with questions to ask your insurance agent to ensure proper coverage, and securing your home and property to avoid or reduce damage.

The session is free and offers a detailed checklist to help be prepared and a resource guide of both local and national agencies that can provide assistance following a disaster.

“This is a great opportunity to learn more about the simple steps you can do today to make tomorrow a bit easier,” said Stephen Grindle, Manager of Neighborhood Services for the City. “One hour could truly impact our citizens’ future, and we encourage all to attend.”

Representatives from Joplin Fire Department and Emergency Management will also be at the sessions to answer questions about local response in a disaster. In addition, attendees are encouraged to bring their weather radios if needing assistance in tuning to the proper channel(s) for your geographic area.

Times and dates for the Homeowners Sessions are: 7 p.m. Thursday, January 28; 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 2; 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 17 and 6 p.m. Thursday, February 18.

Sessions for Small to Mid-Size Businesses will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2 and Wednesday, February 17. All sessions will be held in the Council Chambers of Joplin City Hall, 602 South Main Street. Plenty of parking is conveniently located on the west side of the building. The evening entrance is also located on the west side of the building.

Reservations are not required for these free sessions. For more information, contact Neighborhood Services of Joplin City hall at 417-625-0820, ext. 518.

Annex opening at allow Reynolds Hall renovation to begin at MSSU

(From Southern News Service)

As the Spring 2016 semester began earlier this week, students who ordinarily would have had classes on the third floor of Reynolds Hall found a new home in the Reynolds Annex building, located on the southwest side of campus.

The Board of Governors at Missouri Southern State University heard an update on the project during a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 21, before taking a tour of the annex, which will serve as a transitional space during the Reynolds renovation.

Last year, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced funding that will allow for the renovation of the second oldest building on campus, which houses the biology, environmental health, physical science and mathematics programs. House Bill 19 will provide $5.2 million for the project, while House Bill 17 contains an additional $1.5 million, which will be matched by the university.

“Right now, the third floor of Reynolds is empty,” said Rob Yust, vice president for business affairs. “The contractor will be in there over the course of the spring semester to do light demo work. After the spring semester and prior to the start of summer classes, they’ll be doing heavy demo.

“Hopefully by this time next year, we’ll be able to utilize the third floor and then empty the first floor for the same sort of process.”

While that work continues, students and faculty are being housed in the new annex. The 15 mobile units that make up the building were delivered to campus after being purchased from SEMA, said Bob Harrington, director of the Physical Plant at Missouri Southern.

“At the time, we were we were talking about remodeling Reynolds and trying to figure out how to handle the labs,” said Harrington. “Moving math classes is easy, but labs are a whole different project.

“The units we purchased were used by Joplin High School at Northpark Mall after the tornado. After the new high school opened, FEMA put them in storage and then gave them to SEMA.”

The university studied how the high school had utilized the units and came up with a plan to assemble them as a 12,766-square-foot space for labs, classrooms and faculty offices. Faculty members were brought in to help design the layout for the labs to best suit the needs of their students.

The annex was completed over Christmas break with the delivery of cabinets, tables, lab equipment and supplies for Reynolds Hall.

Yust said Missouri Southern is already looking beyond the renovations in Reynolds Hall when it comes to uses for the annex.

“Once work in Reynolds is complete and everybody is out of the annex into their permanent home, it can be used for other purposes,” he said. “We’ll always need transition areas for classes and to make room for further expansion.”

The meeting marked the first for Anita Y. Oplotnik, who was appointed to the Board of Governors earlier this month by Gov. Jay Nixon.

Oplotnik is a branch manager in Springfield for the financial advisor firm of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, and has been with the firm since 2005. Prior to that, she was with Bank of America in Springfield from 1989 to 2005. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from Missouri Southern and her MBA in finance from Missouri State University.

Her term will end Aug. 30, 2021.

Presentation of discoveries at Civil War Park set for January 28

(From the City of Joplin)

On Thursday, January 28, the public is invited to hear a special presentation from Chris Dukes about his archaeological discovery at the Jasper County Civil War Park. Following his presentation, “Unearthing the Past - The Discovery at Sherwood/Rader Farm Civil War Park, Inc.”, four area authors will participate in a Civil War roundtable discussion. This event of historical information begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in the Corley Auditorium at Missouri Southern State University.

During two days in May of 1863 the severe brutality of the Civil War became painfully real to the soldiers and residents of western Jasper County. These two days would be remembered forever in the annals of history leaving a lasting mark on the members of the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry Regiment and the area around the town of Sherwood, Missouri. Much has been researched and written of these volatile 48 hours. The purpose of the evening is to dig deeper into the story as we uncover additional information and evidence from these events.

Dukes, a Missouri State University graduate student, is the keynote speaker and will discuss in detail the 57 Civil War related artifacts he uncovered at the Jasper County Civil War Park site. Following his presentation, four noted area authors will share their thoughts, knowledge, passion and expertise delving deeper into the significance of the two days in May as well as elaborate on Chris Dukes’ discovery. Steve Cottrell, Steve Weldon, Roland Diggs Sr., and Larry Wood will make up the roundtable panel.

Following their discussion the premier of a six-minute promotional film will showcase the future plans at the Sherwood/Rader Farm Civil War Park site.

Co-sponsors for the evening are the Southwest Archaeological Society and the Missouri Southern State University Social Science Department. Missouri Southern State University television station KGCS will record the night’s program.

For further information contact Brad Belk, president of the Sherwood/Rader Farm Civil War Park, Inc. Belk will serve as the master of ceremonies for the evening, and can be reached at 417-623-1180.
