McDonald County Route E bridge over Big Sugar Creek to close next week until September

(From MODOT)

McDonald County Route E Bridge Over Big Sugar Creek
Near Powell CLOSED Beginning Week of May 7

McDonald County – The McDonald County Route E bridge over Big Sugar Creek near Powell will be CLOSED beginning the week of May 7 until early September, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The existing bridge, built in 1947, is 20-feet wide and striped for single-lane traffic due to deterioration of the structure and the resulting weight restrictions. Contractor crews will replace the old bridge with a new 26-foot wide structure with two 11-foot lanes and two-foot shoulders on each side.

Drivers can get to entrances on either side of the bridge. However, they will not be able to cross the bridge during construction.

Signs and message boards will alert drivers to the bridge closing.

Drivers are urged to find alternate routes during the bridge project. No signed detour is planned.

Project background:
Prime Contractor: West Plains Bridge & Grading LLC, West Plains
Completion Date: September 1, 2018
Total project cost: $1.8 million

Financial Reports

Mr. Wood noted the monthly cash flow statement saying it shows a healthy anticipated bank balance as of April 30, 2018. He said the report includes two sets of checks written for March 13-31 and April 1-9, and he asked if there were any questions. Checks in the amount of $705,710.02 were approved ON MOTION by Mrs. Andris, seconded by Mr. Butler, and unanimously carried. Mr. Wood said we are about three-fourths of the way through the year, and the rest of the current fund balances and agency accounts were reviewed. He questioned the uncollectible accounts receivable. Ms. Rand explained it is a different tracking method this year from last year so comparing year to year is not a true picture. Mr. Wood noted the rest of the agency accounts look good. Mrs. Andris said the centers all look above their expected budget. Dr. Methvin said revenue has come in from the spring semester, but expenses will continue through June 30 when incoming revenue has decreased. Mr. Wood asked what percentage of McDonald County students are from Arkansas. Mr. Divine said at least forty percent with more in the nursing program. Dr. Methvin said the Cassville nursing program is also probably about half from Arkansas. Mr. Wood said that has been unanticipated. The revenue and expenditure accounts were reviewed briefly.

Senior art show to open Monday at MSSU

(From Southern News Service)

A diverse range of artwork created in different media will be the focus of “Works Unrelated,” a new show featuring three senior art majors set to open Monday, April 30, in Missouri Southern State University’s Spiva Art Gallery.

Ceramist Sarah Clark's work stems from her Honors thesis, entitled "The Art of Being Centered: Exploring Zen Buddhism in Ceramics." She attempts to create calming, peaceful ceramic forms based on principles of Zen to inspire mindful practices in viewers.

Danielle Davis is a graphic design student focusing on game theory and illustration. Her work is an original board game with whimsical artwork and a story based on a post-apocalyptic fantasy world.

Shelby Moe is a printmaking student whose work focuses on the issues of animal exploitation and rights. Through printmaking based installation, she hopes to create dialogue, questioning how we treat the non-human members of our society.

A reception will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 30, in the gallery. The show will run through Friday, May 4. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Tire drop off event scheduled in Joplin

(From the City of Joplin)

The annual Tire Drop-Off Event will be on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Joplin Recycling Center, 1310 West A Street. Automotive passenger tires, with or without rims will be accepted at no charge from Joplin residents, Joplin residential landlords, and Liberty Utilities-Empire District residential electric customers. There is a ten tire per household limit. Commercial, farm, large truck, and racing tires will not be accepted. This event is funded by Liberty Utilities-Empire District and the City of Joplin as a community service.

To conserve landfill space and keep hazardous materials from landfills, whole tires were banned from Kansas and Missouri landfills in the 1990s. If residents need further assistance throughout the year with tire disposal or a commercial tire business needs help contracting with a tire disposal company, they may contact Mary Anne Phillips, Joplin Recycling Coordinator 417-624-0820 extension 501.

Most of the tires will be hauled to a processor, where the tires will be shredded, then sold to make different products. Uses for tires can be in the manufacturing of playground cover, garden hoses, loading dock bumpers, parking lot wheel stops, road paving aggregate, landscape edging and much more.

“Consumers are encouraged to look for products made with recycled content and especially those made in Missouri,” said Phillips.

Throughout the year, the Joplin Recycling Center accepts cardboard, fiberboard, magazines, books, office paper, newspapers, telephone books, plastic #1 and #2 bottles with necks, all colors of container glass, metal, packing peanuts, clean bubble wrap, #2 and #4 plastic shopping bags, cooking oil, and all batteries. Computers, televisions and all electronic waste, except large photocopiers, can also be dropped off all year at no charge. However, there is a $10 recycling fee for every television, monitor, and microwave oven. The Center is open to everyone, regardless of residency.

Limited household hazardous waste (HHW) is accepted from residents of McDonald, Newton, Jasper, Barton and Vernon Counties. This HHW service is funded by Region M Solid Waste Management District, the Department of Natural Resources, and the City of Joplin. Business and commercial hazardous waste is never accepted.

Packing materials, moving boxes, used books and magazines, and a self-serve document destruction service are complimentary at the center.

For more information, contact Mary Anne Phillips, City of Joplin Recycling Coordinator at 417-624-0820 extension 501, or the City’s web site at www.joplinmo.org/recycling .

Citizen call leads to Joplin Police Department arrest for DWI, drugs, endangering the welfare of a child

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Incident Spotlight

Yesterday evening we received a call about a vehicle driving in a manner that the caller thought the driver might be impaired.

The caller said the vehicle had ran them off the road on South Byers. A short time later, an officer located the vehicle and stopped it at 3rd and Jackson for not using a turn signal.

The driver jumped out of the vehicle and wouldn’t cooperate, and a taser was utilized to get him into custody. The female passenger also jumped out of the vehicle and wouldn’t cooperate and was arrested. The male driver was found to be intoxicated and was arrested for DWI, resisting arrest, driving while suspended, and endangering the welfare of a child as it was discovered that there were two young juveniles in the vehicle, who also weren’t restrained.

The female passenger was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for having Xanax and Hydrocodone on her person. The kids were placed in a safe home with a family member. We are very serious about taking impaired drivers off the street and we appreciate when people report such driving behavior to us.

Joplin Public Library Teen Department seeking summer volunteers

(From the Joplin Public Library)

Applications are now available for Joplin Public Library's Teen Summer Volunteer Program. This program takes place during the Library's summer reading program featured in June and July. Training sessions for volunteers will be offered in the latter part of May.

This opportunity is available to teens from ages 14 to 18 years of age. The program is designed to mimic a "real world" job experience for teens who may be entering the work force for the first time. Volunteers will learn a variety of job skills while supporting the Teen Department's summer reading efforts.

“Teens are sometimes caught in the Catch-22 scenario of applying for a job for the first time, yet lacking the experience that employers are wanting,” said Beth Snow, Teen Services Librarian. “Our teen volunteer program is a great way for them to gain that needed experience employers may be looking for.”

Snow added that the volunteer program is competitive with limited slots available. The program has been offered for several years and she reminds everyone that previous participants will need to reapply.

Applications can be picked up at the Joplin Public Library's Teen Desk. Application deadline is 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 8. Qualified applicants will be called to set up an interview. For more information, contact Beth Snow, Teen Services Librarian at 417-623-7953, ext. 1027.
