Nancy Hughes: Jacket with a "J"

(Author Nancy Hughes will be signing copies of her books Saturday 1 to 3 p.m. at the Joplin Public Library.)

Key Scripture:

“. . . for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Galatians 3:27 (NIV)

Devotion:

When I was in high school, a girl always considered it a huge honor if she got to wear the letterman’s jacket of her boyfriend for a Friday night football game. When she wore that jacket for the game, she was immediately linked to the boy whose name was on the back of the jacket. And that in turn connected her to his “fame” as a football player. She belonged to him.

Yes, I’m sure that concept would be considered totally outdated in today’s society but to us, it was a big deal and an honor. That piece of clothing meant that we belonged.

Today’s Key Scripture speaks about a different type of clothing in Galatians 3:27. It says “. . . for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” And that caused me to think: what if.

What if we wore the clothing of Christ – in other words – Christ Himself every minute of every day of our lives? I know we are supposed to do just that but unfortunately there are times when I seem to be more comfortable wearing the old rags of the world than the clothes that Jesus gives me.
But suppose every morning I chose to be clothed with Jesus.

Would I act differently when dealing with a neighbor who was once again playing his loud music at 3 am? Would he be able to know by our conversation that my “clothing” was made from the sacrifice of Jesus?

How about my words and actions sitting at a ball game when my team is losing? Would everyone know who I belong to or would people around me hear and see someone completely opposite of the Lord?

I don’t need to wear a letterman’s jacket with a big “J” on it for others to know I belong to Jesus. But I do need to remember that as His follower, my wardrobe must change so that I am clothed with Christ for life.

My Prayer for Today:

Father, too often I forget who I belong to and act as though I don’t even know you. Forgive me for not clothing myself with your son every day. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Reflection:

Can people around you tell that you are a Christian by what you “wear” every day?

Have you ever considered that what you say and do is a clear reflection of the One you serve?

Application:
Journal the characteristics of Jesus from Colossians 3:12.

With every situation you face, remember that you are clothed with Jesus. Treat people accordingly.

Power Verses:
Galatians 3:27 (NIV) “. . . for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”

Colossians 3:12 (NIV) “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Romans 13:14 (NIV) “Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”

Submissions sought for MSSU horror film festival

(From Southern News Service)

The Southern Broadcasters Club at Missouri Southern State University is seeking submissions for a horror film festival, to be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in Corley Auditorium.

The film festival is open to the community, with submissions to be no more than 15 minutes long and held to the ratings standards of a PG-13 film.

“The festival is open to everyone,” said Brianna Allen, a junior mass communication/broadcasting major and president of Southern Broadcasters. “It could be a horror movie or even a parody of one.

“This is our club’s first full semester. We want to promote film, TV and broadcasting and encourage people to do independent projects.”

Submissions should be uploaded to YouTube, with the link emailed to southernbroadcasters@gmail.com by no later than midnight on Sunday, Oct. 25.

Admission to the film festival will be $5 for the general public, and $3 for MSSU students with ID, with tickets available at the door. Proceeds raised during the event will benefit the student organization, as well as to help purchase new equipment for KGCS, the campus television station.

For more information on guidelines for the film festival, visit the Southern Broadcasters Club’s Facebook page.

Signing set for Saturday at Always Buying Books

Author M. L. Brummett, Springfield, will be at Always Buying Books in Joplin for a signing tomorrow(Saturday), 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for her novel Semper Fidelis.

The following description of the book is from its Amazon site:
Eighteen-year-old Virginia leaves her childhood Idaho farm with her sister Nellie, and they head to California to support the fighting forces of the United States. Nothing about their promising new life, working as war plane riveters, turns out as planned. Neither girl intended to fall in love, but who can really plan for love? Virginia fights heart wrenching battles when she has to choose between her fun-loving sailor and her down-to-earth marine. Nellie s sailor is charming; he s her true love, but his involvement in the secret service turns her life upside down.

Innocence was blown out of the trenches during WWII. It didn t matter if it was the trenches of war, or the trenches of love. It was a time to find out what you were made of; a time to learn who you were. Bravery and valor were braided between flesh and soul.

Some people call them the greatest generation. Maybe they were simply the generation of greatness. It was everything for God, Country, and Family or nothing at all. True love fell easily, and it stayed where it landed because they were always faithful Semper Fidelis.

MSSU seminars designed to put businesses on the Google map

(From Southern News Service)

The Small Business & Technology Development Center at Missouri Southern State University is working to get area small businesses on the map … the Google map, that is.
A series of “Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map” workshops will offer tips for businesses to successfully take advantage of the online search engine’s listings.
“Ninety-seven percent of smart phone users use their phones to identify products and services near them,” said Sherry Noller, research associate for the SBTDC. “According to Google, only about 37 percent of small businesses have claimed their online identity.
“This is a basic workshop introduction to help them claim their business listing on Google, and how to make changes – such as adding pictures, a phone number and hours – going forward.”
“Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map” is part of Google’s “Get Your Business Online” program, which aims to bring community members, business owners and civic leaders together to help small businesses succeed on the Web. For this project, the SBTDC has also partnered with Chamber of Commerce locations in Joplin, Carl Junction, Carthage, Webb City and Neosho.
Events:
Joplin: 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom at Missouri Southern.
Carl Junction: 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Carl Junction Community Center.
Carthage: 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Carthage Public Library.
Webb City: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the Route 66 Event Center.
Neosho: 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce.
Google is promoting the national “Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map” effort by using #OnTheMap. Participants will receive T-shirts and bags customized with brands for their individual cities, said Noller.
To RSVP for one of the local sessions, visit www.mssutraining.com. There is no charge to attend, but space is limited.

Ham and bean benefit planned for United Way

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin is proud to bring back a favorite event that helped support United Way in Joplin – the Annual Ham N’Bean Feed. This year’s Bean Feed is set for Friday, October 9 at Joplin Memorial Hall, 212 West 8th Street. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and offers an “all you can eat” menu of ham and beans, cornbread, dessert and a drink. As with past events, the proceeds will be donated to United Way of Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas.

Originally held in Fire Station #1, the Ham n’ Bean Feed was a downtown social event for many to come together with current and retired firefighters, who cooked the meal, and set hundreds of places for people to enjoy this delicious meal for a good cause. The last bean feed was held in 2010, and the City put the event on hold these past few years due to the recovery work following the disaster was 2011.

“We appreciate the Firefighters again cooking the meal for this event, and we’re happy to help host it at Memorial Hall,” said Brian Kelly, Assistant to the City Manager and Chairman of the City’s United Way Committee. “It’s been five years since the last event, but they still have their recipe and we’re hoping everyone comes out to enjoy a great meal and gathering with City employees and the community.”

Admission is five dollars ($5) for the meal. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or in advance at City Hall with Tamra Schaller, Human Resources or Brian Kelly, City Manager’s Office. To go orders will also be available.

The City of Joplin’s United Way Committee has planned other fun activities during the bean feed, including a silent auction offering various prizes. All items for the meal and the auction have been donated by community businesses.

“We want to thank everyone who is supporting this event for United Way,” said Kelly. “It has a great history, and provides a fun way for the community to come together and support a cause that benefits so many of our citizens who use the resources funded by United Way.”
For more information, call Brian Kelly, a member of the City’s United Way Committee, at 417-624-0820, ext. 203.

MSSU Career Services receives award

(From Southern News Service)

The Missouri Campus Compact 2015 Outstanding Community & Campus Collaboration Award has been presented to the Career Services at Missouri Southern State University, along with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Network and Motive Matters.

The award is in recognition of collaboration efforts that have created and support Missouri Southern programs including Super Leaders, Dress for Success, Career Fair Cram, Leadership Luncheons and Networking 101.

Programs were selected based on the following criteria:

· Two or more academic semesters of active partnership between the community organization and the institution.

· Partnership between the community organization and the institution was founded on a shared vision and clearly articulated goals, and the community organization was involved in the development of the program goals and learning outcomes.

· The community organization demonstrated a commitment to the student learning process and made a quantitative and qualitative impact on student learning.

· Individuals in the community were significantly impacted by the community organization and the institution demonstrated a commitment to meaningful service to the community.

“Through partnerships with YPN and Motive Matters, we have been able to create and sustain programs that bridge the gap between campus and community,” said Nicole Brown, director of Career Services. “Both organizations have been partners from the inception of the Super Leader program, an initiative created to identify, develop and motivate future community leaders. All programs are designed to help students connect and develop relationships with the local community in addition to preparing for the job market.”

One program was chosen per state in Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. Representatives will accept the award at the Campus Compact Heartland Conference on Oct. 30 in Kansas City, Mo.

Farewell reception set for Joplin Public Library teen librarian

(From Joplin Public Library)

The Joplin Public Library invites the community of Joplin to a farewell reception honoring Teen Librarian Cari Rérat for her service to Joplin. The come-and-go event will be held on Monday, September 28, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Joplin Public Library’s teen department.

Rérat began her library career in the circulation department as a page, she later moved to the children’s department where she worked as a children’s assistant for a short time, and then quickly progressed to become the Library’s first teen librarian. She has been with the Library for ten year and has resigned her post for an opportunity to become the director of Thomas J. Harrison Pryor Public Library in Pryor, Oklahoma. Her last day at the library will be September 29, 2015.

For more information, call 417-623-7953.

High school tutors to attend event at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

High-school tutors from Southwest Missouri will learn ways they can enhance their skills when working with other students during Tutor Day from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Missouri Southern State University.

Nearly 140 students are expected for the annual event, coming from Greenfield, Washburn, Carl Junction, Monett, Marionville, Neosho, Jasper and Joplin. Participants will attend sessions led by current college students and learn tutoring skills that they can utilize while working with their peers.

“It’s the fifth year for Tutor Day,” said Stephanie Hopkins, director of the Student Success Center, which sponsors the program. “The students will learn more about tutoring and best practices they can use. We also hope they have fun and learn more about Missouri Southern.

“After the presentations, they’ll have the choices to visit several different points of interest on campus, such as the cadaver lab, KGCS and the End Zone facility, or attend an ALICE training session.”

The success of Tutor Day over the last five years at Missouri Southern has led to an invitation to share how others can emulate it.

Hopkins and Dr. Debbie Fort – an academic skills specialist – will attend the National College Learning Center Association’s 30th annual conference next month in Milwaukee, Wis., where they will give a presentation on Tutor Day.

“We’ll discuss ways other universities can create similar programs,” said Hopkins. “We’ll explain what we do and offer advice on what they can do at their schools.”

J-HAP adds Energy Star certified homes incentives for homebuyers

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin’s Homebuyer Assistance Program (J-HAP) is now offering an Energy Star program incentive for homebuyers. This new incentive will provide an additional homebuyer subsidy of $5,000 to be applied to the purchase price of a new, never-occupied home in accordance with existing J-HAP subsidy requirements and restrictions. The subsidy is provided to the home buyer, not the home builder. Funds for this subsidy will be available until J-HAP program funds are exhausted.

“This is another tool that the City is able to offer citizens who are looking to home ownership,” said Larry Eller, a Program Manager of the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery grant. “J-HAP has provided nearly $9.6 million of assistance to help more than 360 buyers into a home. This new incentive offers additional benefits to those interested in purchasing a home.”

Energy Star certified new homes are designed and built to standards well above most other homes on the market today, delivering energy efficiency savings of up to 30 percent when compared to typical new homes. Benefits of owning an ENERGY STAR CERTIFIED HOME include reduced ownership costs as a result of:

• More efficient appliances

• Properly installed and inspected insulation

• Higher efficiency windows

• Tight construction and correctly installed duct system

• Quieter and more efficient HVAC system

• Improved air quality

In order to qualify for this incentive, the following conditions must be satisfied:

1. The home will be newly constructed and never occupied.

2. The homebuyer will provide the J-HAP program with the home’s Energy Star certificate.

3. The homebuyer will provide the J-HAP program with the Final Home Energy Rating System (HERS) report.

4. The homebuyer will provide the J-HAP program with the Energy Rater’s RESNET certification.

5. J-HAP funds are available until the City’s J-HAP funds are exhausted and expended. There will be no reservation of funds for this program.

Launched in August, 2013, J-HAP was implemented to assist eligible homebuyers with down-payment and/or closing costs. Funding assistance for this program is being provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, through a Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) award, which was received as a result of the May 22, 2011 tornado.

J-HAP is intended to repopulate the tornado affected area and not limited to first-time homebuyers or to those strictly affected by the tornado. Joplin residents and others interested in moving to Joplin can learn more about the J-HAP qualifications and guidelines by logging onto the City’s CDBG-DR website under the J-HAP information link at http://www.joplinmo.org/cdbg-dr . Full eligibility requirements will be provided at the time of application to the program. Individuals who have additional questions or who are interested in applying for the J-HAP should call the J-HAP Program Office at 417-850-2249 to schedule an appointment. A J-HAP Application Packet may obtained by submitting a request to the J-HAP Program Office by e-mail at JHAP@joplinmo.org or in person at 602 S. Main Street Joplin, MO 64801.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) are available within the J-HAP information link at www.joplinmo.org/cdbg-dr or by clicking on the link at the end of this article.

We encourage all potential applicants, agents, lenders, and builders to please refer to the FAQs, or contact the J-HAP Program Office with any questions or concerns at 417-850-2249.

J-HAP applicants are encouraged to work with local realtors and homebuilders to find homes that qualify for this additional subsidy. For more information about the Energy Star program, contact: Larry Eller CDBG Program Manager, 417-624-0820, extension 572. The J-HAP Program Office is located in the Main Lobby of Joplin City Hall at 602 S. Main Street in Joplin.
