April 2016 bond issue possible for East Newton, tax rate set

(From East Newton R-6 School District)

As part of the continued efforts in keeping the patrons informed, the East Newton R-VI Schools administration will provide monthly information concerning Board meetings.

A recap of the August, 2015 regular meetings is as follows:

Public Comments: None

The Board approved the Consent Agenda, including the previous month Board minutes and monthly bills, and substitute teacher list.

Under reports, a presentation was made by CTS regarding capital project needs for the district. The District had CTS come as an outside resource to look at needs the district might wish to pursue regarding a possible April 2016 “no debt levy increase” bond issue.

A financial report was given for the month of July and first day enrollment numbers were presented. Total enrollment for the first day of school (K-12) was 1,389 students.

Under Old Business, none.

In respect to New Business, the Board approved the FY16 tax rate. The tax rate will be the same as it was the previous year, $3.2191 per tax payers assessed valuation. The operating levy is $2.75 and the debt levy is .4691.

The Board approved the redemption of $150,000 on the district’s current General Obligation Bonds. This will save tax payers approximately $6,750 of interest. The Board heard the first reading of MSBA policy updates. The Board approved the first amendment to the current budget. Last on the agenda was discussion of hiring procedures.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for September 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Central Office.

Southern Match creates 25 endowed scholarships

(From Southern News Service)

A total of 25 new, endowed scholarships for students at Missouri Southern State University have been established through the Southern Match scholarship initiative.

The limited-time program was launched in April by the Missouri Southern Foundation in order to increase the value of new scholarships.

The Foundation set aside $200,000 for the program, which placed an additional $10,000 into each newly endowed scholarship created. The minimum principal amount under the initiative was $20,000 – with half coming from the donor and half from the Foundation. The donor’s name was placed on the entire $20,000 and the income distributed from the fund will be based on the same amount.

Southern Match was limited to 20 new scholarships, but the program yielded more inquiries about participating, said Dr. Delores Honey, the Foundation’s director of donor relations.

“The program generated so much interest that the Foundation’s board agreed to add another $50,000,” said Honey.

The board approved the additional funding earlier this month, resulting in five more scholarships being created. The 25 scholarships will provide assistance to students in a wide range of areas – from accounting and pre-dental to nursing and athletics.

“We’re excited that Southern Match exceeded our initial expectations,” said Honey. “Our students will be the beneficiaries of some very generous donors.”

French film festival planned at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

A joint effort between the Honors Program and Spiva Library has resulted in a grant through the French-American Cultural Exchange (FACE) Foundation to stage a French film festival on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.

The university has received a $2,200 grant to become part of the Tournées Film Festival, a program of the FACE Foundation in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. The program, now in its 20th year, has partnered with more than 450 universities to bring French cinema to campuses in the United States.

Its mission is to help colleges and universities in the United States create a yearly French film series that might one day become self-sustaining, and to promote French culture.

“It’s a prestigious grant awarded every year to select universities across the country,” said Dr. Michael Howarth, director of the Honors Program. “I spoke with Amber Carr, marketing and outreach librarian, and we thought this would be a great opportunity for Missouri Southern, especially with our international mission.”

They submitted the grant application in May and recently received word that Missouri Southern received funding to host the film festival.

“The funding covers the distribution costs for each of the movies,” said Howarth. “They give you a list of movies that you can choose from. You have to show at least six films within a four-week period. We’ll start the week after spring break in 2016.”

The selections available include classics, featured tiles and alternative choices. Howarth said that stipulations of the grant say that the festival must include a film from the classic category and five from the other two. At least one of the films shown during Missouri Southern’s festival will be an animated title, he said.

“Right now, we’re watching movies and figuring out which ones we want to choose,” Howarth said.

The films, screening dates and times will be announced later this fall.

The Tournées Festival is made possible with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S., the Centre National de la Cinématographie et de l’Image Animée, and the Franco-American Cultural Fund.

Tyson Foods donates $25,000 to Bright Futures Neosho

(From Neosho Public Schools)

Bright Futures Neosho is starting the school year off strong with a $25,000 donation from Tyson Foods to go toward the Weekend Backpack Program. A presentation will be held Wednesday, August 26 at 10:00 a.m. at the Neosho YMCA to recognize Tyson Foods' generosity.
The Weekend Backpack Program has been put in place for students facing food insecurity who without the program, may not receive a meal between Friday and Monday. Bags are sent home on Friday of each week with protein-packed foods so that students arrive on Monday ready to learn. Bright Futures Neosho organizes and provides nearly 400 backpacks for students in the Neosho School District.
Bright Futures Coordinator Barb Lake commented, "We are grateful for the support of Tyson to kick off our campaign for this year. The program averages around $150 per student, adding up to $60,000 a year based on past enrollment. This is why donations like Tyson's are so important to keep our program going. Their generosity inspires other businesses and individuals to support kids in our community."
This event is open to the public and volunteers will begin filling backpacks shortly after the presentation.

Record number of new freshmen enroll at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

Surpassing numbers not seen in more than 15 years, a record number of new freshmen have enrolled at Missouri Southern State University.

During the Board of Governor’s meeting on Friday, Aug. 21, board members received an update on enrollment for the Fall 2015 semester. Enrollment (as of Thursday, Aug. 20) is up in several important categories.

Dr. Alan Marble, university president, said the numbers demonstrate a campus-wide commitment to moving the university forward.

“Year after year, we continue to see the reputation of this university advance,” said Marble. “With the quality of our programs and the addition of new facilities, more and more students are recognizing that they want to be part of the Lion family.”

Total enrollment at the university has grown by 2 percent to 5,721 students, up from 5,613 in Fall 2014. The number of new freshmen is up 12 percent over last year – 957, compared with 856 last year. The previous record was 950 freshmen in the fall of 1999.

Missouri Southern students are currently enrolled in 70,554 credit hours, up 7 percent from 66,163 in 2014.

The number of international and transfer students have also seen significant gains.

There are 218 international students enrolled at the university, up 13 percent from last fall’s 193. Transfer students are also up 13 percent – 654 compared with 581 in 2014.

During late registration scheduled for next week, the university anticipates an additional 150 dual-credit students to enroll.

Official numbers will be reported to the state on the 20th day of classes – Friday, Sept. 11.

Dr. Brad Hodson, the university’s executive vice president, said the numbers reflect the efforts of personnel across campus.

“At this point, we have recorded the largest freshmen class ever,” said Hodson. “We want to thank the staff in the Admissions Department for the work they do each day to get students enrolled, as well as our great faculty members who are helping to recruit, advise and mentor our students.

“Their endeavors are making Missouri Southern a destination for students across the region.”

In other business, head football coach Denver Johnson made a presentation to the board about the upcoming football season, highlighting program improvements, recruitment strategy changes and an update on the end zone facility. A ribbon-cutting event for the new building is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, before the Hall of Fame game.

Spiva Gallery exhibit showcases Spanish influences

(From Southern News Service)

Looking back, Jade Henning says the two weeks she spent in Spain was the best experience of her life.

“The artists I knew about before, from art history class … I saw the places they lived and walked on the streets where they walked,” Henning says. “I saw the most beautiful and influential works I’ve ever seen. It was amazing.”

The impact the trip had upon her is captured in her photographs and drawings – with mosaics and flamenco dancing acting as major influences.

Henning is one of six artists with works featured in “Pero, Esto es Arte?” (“But, is it art?”), a new exhibit currently on display in the Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University. The exhibit – which is still being added to – features drawings, paintings, mosaics and more, as well as artwork purchased during the trip.

Henning – along with Adam Christian, Richard Tran and Traice Guhr – were art majors who graduated during spring commencement ceremonies. Also on the trip was Jenny Journeycake, who is currently a senior art major. It was led by Burt Bucher, associate professor of art.

During their two-week trip to Spain, they visited Madrid, Seville, Granada and Barcelona, staying in hostels and hotels as they traveled and experienced the country’s art and culture.

“It was the first time I had traveled abroad,” says Journeycake. “It was really eye-opening for me to have that experience and to see their way of life. What really stood out for me was the passion they had for their culture and their love for family.”

Journeycake’s contributions to the exhibit include an oil painting and several aquatint works – a process that involves etching a picture into a metal plate, inking it, then dipping it in an acid that eats away at the metal and creates different shades of ink.

Gallery hours for the exhibit, which will run through Sept. 9, are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. A reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3. Admission is free and open to the public.

Missouri Southern Foundation gives $250,000 toward Joplin medical school

(From Southern News Service)

The Missouri Southern Foundation has approved a $250,000 gift toward the creation of a Joplin campus for the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.

The medical school, which is scheduled to open in August 2017, will be located in Mercy Hospital Joplin’s former component hospital at 2817 St. John’s Blvd. It will enroll 150 students per year into the program.

“With this generous gift, Missouri Southern has become the first local university to make a commitment to KCU’s plans to create a Joplin campus for their medical school,” said Rudy Farber, chairman of the Regional Medical School Alliance’s fundraising board. “We’re grateful for the university becoming a partner in this project. There is an enormous amount of synergy between Missouri Southern’s academic programs and those offered at KCU, and we anticipate the partnership between the two universities to continue to flourish.”

An effort to raise the funds needed to open the Joplin campus has been underway for some time.

The Foundation board approved the gift following a presentation by the alliance, said Dr. Brad Hodson, Missouri Southern’s executive vice president.

“I think it’s important for two reasons,” said Hodson. “First, it’s a great vehicle for Missouri Southern graduates to continue their education close to home and complete their residencies in the area. Second, the medical school will have a significant economic impact on the region and it’s important for the university to help make that happen.”

Dr. Alan Marble, president of Missouri Southern, said that the medical school will strengthen the university’s reputation for its high-caliber pre-med program and help attract more high-performing students.

“We’re also excited for the opportunity to work collaboratively with the faculty at KCU on programs and research that will benefit our students and theirs,” said Marble. “The medical school will be a wonderful addition to the community and we look forward to an enduring partnership between our campuses.”
