East Town Mural Dedication and Celebration set for Sunday

(From the City of Joplin)

The East Town neighborhood and Joplin community is invited to celebrate the completion of the East Town Mural Project during the “East Town Mural Dedication & Celebration” on Sunday, October 2, 2pm at Broadway and Mineral in the Penny Pinchers parking lot (715 Broadway St, Joplin, MO 64801). Rain date: Sunday, October 9, 2pm.

This celebration will include musical performances by the Southern Jazz Orchestra from Missouri Southern State University and the Community Choir, as well as comments by East Town Mural representatives, local dignitaries, and the lead artist. Light refreshments will be provided and guests are encouraged to bring their own seating.

“I am grateful to the East Town residents that have shared so much with me. As an artist, I tend to work alone, examining and distilling ideas that live in my head. The community mural process requires me to vacate the studio and step outside my own head for a while. I have made kind and generous new friends in East Town, and they remind me that painting thrives when it is a conversation, rather than a monologue.” – Kyle McKenzie, Lead Muralist.

“The creation of public art in neighborhoods can help support revitalization and positive change in a community. Community-based murals touch hearts because of the way they are created. As such, the East Town Mural Project differs from other murals that have been created by one artist. This mural was created with a high level of input and participation by neighborhood members who were willing to tell the stories about their families and the neighborhood. This mural is a work of public art which is accessible for all community members to enjoy on a daily basis, as they go about their daily lives. These community murals have special meaning to both adults and children who can say both now and in the future, ‘I made my mark there. I helped create that.’” – Sharon Beshore, East Town Mural Project Manager.

East Town Mural Project Summary:

This summer, East Town community members of all ages collaborated to create a meaningful, high quality neighborhood mural under the guidance and technical assistance of the East Town Mural Team. The mural team consisted of Kyle McKenzie, lead muralist; Devon Estes, assistant muralist; Jenny Journeycake, mural apprentice; Josie Mai, education coordinator; and Aaron Skapik, education intern.

The East Town neighborhood was Joplin's first settlement, dating back to 1838. In 1873, East Town merged with Murphysburg, its sister city to the west, to become what we now know as Joplin. Many families have lived in the neighborhood for generations and even residents who no longer live in the area care deeply about its future. One of the recent priorities of neighborhood leaders has been the creation a community-based mural to preserve the story of East Town.

Between July and October, a mural has been developed that communicates the history and culture of the East Town community. The mural is located at Broadway and Mineral on the very large and visible wall west of Penny Pinchers parking lot. This intergenerational and cross-cultural community mural project provides an opportunity for participants to learn about making murals, offer ideas for mural content, and experience the design and execution of a highly visible public artwork. There is a tremendous amount of positive community building that develops from the creation of such a mural.

The East Town community embraced this mural project. Over 150 East Town residents attended one of three community meetings held in July. They willingly shared their stories and provided input about key themes to be included in the mural. More than 300 students participated in mural workshops through the Boys & Girls Club, the Joplin Family Y, as well as Crosslines Ministries. In addition, over 800 East Town residents and the Joplin community-at-large gathered for the mural kick-off event (the First Annual Broadway Bash & Mural Design Projection) and 250+ children and adults participated by making their mark during Community Painting Days.

The mural has been created on the wall of the historic Earl Smith Grocery Store building. The store holds many memories of everyday life for East Town residents. Owners of the building, Jim and Jeanetta Diles and daughter, Shannan Diles Wren, graciously allowed the wall to become the home for this powerful community mural.

The East Town Mural Project is supported through a partial grant of $9,000 from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. Additional support of over $9,000 was needed, as the grant project required a dollar-for-dollar match with private funding. Area businesses and organizations, as well as individuals, generously provided the match needed to support the mural project. These include: Freeman Health System, Leggett & Platt, Inc., TAMKO Building Products, Anderson Engineering, Joplin Supply Company, Fagan Electric Company, Inc., Joplin Printing Company, Joplin Rental Center, Lance and Sharon Beshore, Harry and Erin Cornell, Paul Whitehill and The Claude Huff Family Trust. Organizations providing support include Cultural Affairs Committee of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce (JACC) Foundation, the City of Joplin, Crosslines Ministries, and S.O.S. Ministries.

The East Town Mural Project is the sixth Art in Public Places project initiated under the auspices of the JACC Foundation through its Cultural Affairs Committee. Stakeholder organizations involved in this project include: the Emancipation Celebration Committee, Crosslines Ministries, Connect2Culture, Boys & Girls Club, Spiva Center for the Arts, The Joplin Family Y, Freeman Health System, and the City of Joplin, which has designated Community Development Block Grant funds over the next three to five years for infrastructure improvements to East Town.

Webb City's Harry S Truman Elementary named national Blue Ribbon School

(From the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education)

Eight public schools in Missouri have been honored as 2016 Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. The national award honors schools that perform at high academic levels or that perform at high levels while serving a significant proportion of disadvantaged students.

These are Missouri's Blue Ribbon Schools:

Adrian Elementary, Adrian R-III School District
Chapel Hill Elementary, North Kansas City 74 School District
Fairway Elementary, Rockwood R-VI School District
Harry S Truman Elementary, Webb City R-VII School District
James E. Freer Elementary, Windsor C-1 School District
Lucy Franklin Elementary, Blue Springs R-IV School District
Richland High School, Richland R-I School District
William Yates Elementary, Blue Springs R-IV School District

“Congratulations to the students, teachers, school staff and their communities for this tremendous accomplishment,” said Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. “These schools are a model of the progress being made by public schools across our state in preparing students for success.”

Earlier this year, these eight schools were honored as Missouri Gold Star Schools, a program established by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in 1991. They were then nominated for the Blue Ribbon program.

“It’s such an honor to be recognized with the Blue Ribbon Award,” said Principal Raylene Walsh of Cedar Hill Elementary. “It validates that all students can learn at high levels when supported by a staff that uses proven instructional practices and values a shared vision and teamwork.  An award such as this not only brings honor to our school and district but also our community.”

Connie Reynolds, principal of Adrian Elementary, agrees. “The awarding of National Blue Ribbon School status to Adrian Elementary is due to a community that wholeheartedly supports our schools, a staff that is truly invested in and dedicated to each and every member of our school community, and students who work hard every day to be the best they can be while supporting others within our school,” she said.

National magazine recognizes Joplin for quality of life

(From the City of Joplin)

The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce recently announced our metro area received recognition for quality of life assets.

Business Facilities Magazine named the Joplin metro area as a “Top Ten” place in two areas in its recently released 12th Annual Metro Rankings Report.

The Joplin Metro area was ranked seventh in the magazine’s Logistics Leaders of the locations that have “tremendous assets serving all modes of transportation: air, land, water and rail.” Memphis, Tennessee, was ranked first.

Business Facilities ranked Joplin eighth in its Quality of Life ranking. The magazine looked at cost of living and economic growth potential, among other factors. Oklahoma City was ranked first in the quality of life ranking.

Nancy Hughes devotion: Is it okay to add or subtract?

Key Scripture:

“Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.” Deuteronomy 4:2 (NIV)

Devotion:

The title of the article caught my attention: “Eleven Secrets of Irresistible People.” I have friends I would consider to be in that category so I read on to determine if they were in possession of any of the “secrets” that made them impossible to ignore.

The first two “secrets” stated that irresistible people treat everyone with respect and focus on them and what they have to say. No argument from me.

But the next one caught me by surprise. It stated that irresistible people “follow the Platinum Rule” and not the “Golden Rule” found in Matthew 7:12 when Jesus tells his listeners “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
The author of the article went on to explain that the Golden Rule – treating others as you want to be treated – had a “fatal flaw.”

His reasoning determined that all people are not motivated by the same thing and in the same way. So he came to the conclusion that we should simply treat people as THEY want to be treated and if we do that, we will have corrected the “fatal flaw” in the words of Jesus.

If the author is right, then anything is allowed. Anything. The alcoholic who wants you to get him a drink before he drives can do that with your blessing. The deacon who wants you to leave him alone to steal from the church treasury should not be reported. The woman wanting to keep her affair secret from her family should have her wishes honored. After all, it’s how each of these individuals wants to be treated, correct?

Today’s Key Scripture from Deuteronomy 4:2 could not be any clearer: “Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.”

There is a real danger when man decides to change and adapt God’s word to suit him and to make him happy. Where do you stop?

For example, someone is bothered by Jesus rising from the grave so let’s change that part of the Word. And what about hell? Too tough to think about so let’s throw it out altogether.
When the creation decides to tell the Creator what to change in His Word, the outcome will be disastrous.

Read the Word. Period. Do not add or subtract parts that you may not like. God’s Word was written to all of for a reason. May it be too irresistible in our lives to ignore.

My Prayer for Today:

Father, your words are truth. May I never forget that all wisdom comes from you. And may I follow your every Word. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Reflection:

Have you ever wondered if parts of the Bible were flawed, as the author stated? If so, what parts and why?

Application:

Journal examples of wisdom from the world and compare them with God’s Word in the Bible. Ask the Lord to make clear the passages you do not understand.

Speak with those with Biblical knowledge who have studied the Word to explain verses that are confusing to you. Pray for clarity.

Power Verses:

Deuteronomy 4:2 (NIV) “Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.”

I Corinthians 1:25 (NIV) “For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.”

Proverbs 14:7 (NIV) “Stay away from a foolish man, for you will not find knowledge on his lips.”

Joplin Police Department challenges Facebook allegation of racially motivated traffic stop

(The Joplin Police Department responded on its Facebook page a couple of hours ago to an allegation on another Facebook page of a racially-motivated traffic stop. The post is printed below.)

We recently became aware of a circulating Facebook post, which alleges that a member of the community experienced a racially motivated car stop.

We are very strong proponents of transparency and we believe in accountability. With that in mind, we have reached out to the author(s). We have spoken with them in-person and over the phone. We have asked for their help so that we might be able to ascertain any wrongdoing and so that we might restore the confidence and trust that we have worked so hard to earn.

The post in question states that they were at Parr Hill Park on Wednesday the 21st and that they left that location in separate vehicles.

Allegedly there were Joplin Police cruisers circling the area during that time. The specific allegation is that the citizen was stopped at about 8 PM near East 7th St. and MO 249 and that the stop was because police were looking for a black male driver of a suspicious vehicle. (East 7th Street and MO 249 is outside of our jurisdiction.)

Our police vehicles have Automatic Vehicle Locators (AVL) on them. We have checked our records and on Wednesday, September 21st, between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM there were no police vehicles near East 7th Street and MO 249 nor were there any near 18th Street and Kansas Ave. (Parr Hill Park area)

Most Joplin Police units have cameras and some officers have body-worn cameras. With assistance, we might be able to determine the nature of the contact between one of our officers and the author.

During a face-to-face conversation with the author(s), they repeatedly state that they want nothing to do with this and they distance themselves from the allegation of a racially motivated stop by Joplin Officers. The author(s) have apologized for the post and stated, “we did not think it would get this big”.

At almost noon today, we were told that the post would be taken down. As of 2:00 PM the post still exists and has been shared over three thousand times.

We are unable to determine if a Joplin Police officer stopped the driver in question. The police department conducted approximately fifty car stops during a twenty-four-hour period on Wednesday and none of those stops appear to involve this driver and none were near East 7th Street and MO 249. Without their assistance, we are unable at this time to corroborate or investigate the allegation. It is our heartfelt desire to do the right thing. We need their help to do so.

We would like to remind everyone that the Joplin Police Department holds our officers to the highest standards. Serious allegations have serious implications for our department and for your community. Please be responsible with what you type and what you share.

If you have any information regarding this car stop/contact please contact the Joplin Police Department at 417-623-3131.
