Joplin Public Library summer reading program planned

(From Joplin Public Library)

Joplin Public Library is offering summer reading programs for children, teens, and adults. Special events, incentives, and fun activities are being used to promote the enjoyment of reading a good book and to help children and teens maintain their reading skills over the summer.

Studies show that children who do not read during the summer can experience “summer learning loss” and over time, this loss can add up to the equivalent of three years of reading loss by the end of fifth grade.

Children’s librarian Jeana Gockley agrees that it is vital that children and teens continue reading during the summer. “The Library’s reading programs are specially designed to inspire children and teens to keep reading and to help families, not matter where they reside, have access to quality, age appropriate reading material during the summer.”

This year’s program theme centers on superheroes, with the slogan, “Unmask” being employed to tie all three programs together. The Children’s Club provides readers and listeners, birth through fifth grade, with the opportunity to participate in programs and earn two free books. The Teen Challenge, for young people going into grades six through twelve, gives teens the opportunity to take part in weekly programs and the added bonus of winning a fun mix of prizes. Not to be left out, the Adult program allows adults the chance to win weekly prizes and participate in several special events.

Registration for all three programs started on May 26, but according to library officials, there is still plenty of time to sign up. All activities are free of charge and many have been made possible thanks to a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, as administered by the Missouri State Library, and partnerships with local organizations.

Anyone participating in the Children’s Club or Teen Challenge is eligible to receive a free library card to use for the duration of the program no matter their residency. For more information and a complete schedule of events, call (417) 623-7953 or visit the library’s website at www.joplinpubliclibrary.org.

Changes to Joplin trolley routes to begin Monday

(From the City of Joplin)

With new development in the southern part of Joplin, the City of Joplin has realigned some of its Sunshine Lamp Trolley routes to provide new stops, as well as relocating some existing ones. These changes were made after the City held a public meeting earlier this year to gather input on the proposed routes and stops. Changes will go into effect starting Monday, June 1.

The “Green Route”, is being shortened a bit in order to create enough time to add stops at Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center and Mercy Hospital. To shorten the Green Route, the Trolley will no longer provide service west of Main Street along 32nd or 20th streets. Originally, the Green Route Trolley traveled from 20th Street to 32nd Street along Maiden Lane and Cunningham Boulevard. Stops on the new section of the Green Route, located at 30th & Main and 25th & Main, have been added. The Trolley stop at the former Dillon’s store has been moved to Parr Hill Park. This move will prevent riders in the neighborhood from having to cross 20th street to access the Trolley.

With these changes, riders will now be able to transfer between the Green and Red routes at 20th & Main at 10 minutes past each hour. Additional stops were added to the Red route at 3126 Jackson, 3202 McIntosh, 32nd & McClelland, and Price Cutter. Two new stops on the Red Route will also be added at Cunningham Park and at 20th & Maiden after the completion of the Maiden Lane widening project.

“These changes to the Trolley routes provide access to the southern part of Joplin that has seen new developments in the past year,” said Robert Lolley, Transportation Coordinator for the City of Joplin. “Plus, we were able to add new trolley stops at several of our most frequently requested deviation locations.”

New signage in the Trolley shelters has been added to reflect the changes. In addition, new brochures have been printed with the information, and have been added to the City’s website.
The Trolley operates from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Trolley routes can be found online at www.joplinmo.org/Trolley4routes

Public transportation initially started in 1998 by the City as five vans transported residents to and from their necessary destinations through MAPS (Metro Area Publictransit Service). In 2007, the City introduced the Sunshine Lamp Trolley with a one-hour loop in the northeastern part of Joplin. In 2009, the City added two more routes which overlapped the existing route. Riders can now reach nearly all areas of the City through public transportation.

On average, 11,000 rides are given each month through the Trolleys and MAPS vans. For more information or to receive a Trolley Route map, please call 417-626-8609.

The Missouri Public Service Commission has approved a request filed by The Empire District Electric Company (Empire) to change the fuel adjustment charge (FAC) on the monthly bills of its electric customers.

Repairs to be done on Joplin tornado sirens Tuesday; sirens may sound

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin will work on two sirens in Joplin on Tuesday, May 19. One siren is located near 26th and Jefferson Avenue and the other is stationed at Memorial Hall. During the work, a test will need to be conducted, and these two sirens will be audibly sounded during Tuesday, May 19.

This repair work and testing is necessary to ensure that the siren system is working properly. These sirens did not function properly during the warning alert sent to citizen early Sunday morning. No critical weather is forecast at this time, so please note that the sounding of the sirens in Joplin is a step in the testing procedure.

Keith Stammer, Emergency Management Director, reminds people that the siren warning is an alert for people who are outside, and is not designed to be heard from indoors.
“The sirens provide a warning for anyone who is out of doors to go indoors, if possible, and take shelter,” he said. “People indoors cannot always expect to hear the outdoor warning sirens.”

Stammer encourages residents to utilize a NOAA Weather Radio that provides a warning signal when the area is under a watch or a warning. “The advantage of having a weather radio is that you hear the alerts directly from the National Weather Service, and are kept current of the warning status.” Weather radios are available at local retailers and are priced at approximately $30.

Stammer also encourages people to listen and/or watch local media for updates and information about specific locations of storms. Some media sources also offer phone applications to citizens so they can be notified of approaching storms. Residents should check with the individual media sources in the area for these options.

For more information about the City’s outdoor warning system, call 417-624-0820, ext. 261.

Joplin tree limb drop off site open Saturday

(From the City of Joplin)

The City will open the tree limb and brush drop-off site on Saturday, May 16th from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The drop off program is open the third Saturday of the month through November 21, 2015, unless there is a weather event that warrants an earlier or different date being set. The drop-off site is located at 1702 North Schifferdecker Avenue, six tenths of a mile north of Belle Center Road on the west side of Schifferdecker.

This free drop-off service is for Joplin residents only and has no load limits. Leaves, grass clippings, trash, etc. will not be accepted. Commercial contractors will not be allowed to drop off tree limbs.

Joplin residents should also note that the City’s residential trash service through Republic Services allows yard waste removal on their regular trash pick-up day. Limbs must be cut to a maximum of four (4) feet and bundled. Bundles shall be no heavier than 50 pounds. The diameter of each tree limb shall be no larger than four (4) inches.
Residents and landlords on the City’s residential trash service may also bring tree limbs and brush to the Republic Services Transfer Station on Old Route 66, in Galena, Kansas. Customers need to bring their city utility bill showing the Joplin Trash Service fee and identification. Fees range from $14.14 to $21.22 per load, per trip. This subsidized program runs Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 12 noon to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In order to burn yard waste, citizens need to obtain a Burn Permit from any of the Fire Stations in the City or at the City’s Finance Department at City Hall. The permit costs $5 and is good for three consecutive days.

The Permits are available at the Fire Stations from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven day per week. Please note there may be times when firefighters are not at the station to issue permits, due to the nature of their job. Fire Stations will only be able to accept payment by check or money order.

The Finance Department, located on the third floor of City Hall, 602 South Main, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The City Hall location will accept cash, check, debit card, money order, or credit card payments.

No matter where the Permit is obtained, residents must still inquire with the Joplin Fire Department about weather conditions and if burning is allowed on each day. Residents can obtain this information by calling 623-0403.

For more information, call the Public Works Center at 417-624-0820 ext. 564, the Recycling Division, 417-624-0820 ext. 501, or Republic Services at 800-431-1507.

Joplin trash pickup schedule to change for Memorial Day holiday

(From the City of Joplin0

The City of Joplin residential trash pickup schedule will change due to the Memorial Day holiday. On Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, residential trash will NOT be picked up. Customers who usually have trash picked up on Mondays will have their trash picked up on Tuesday, May 26. For the remainder of the week of May 26 through May 30, the residential trash collection will move forward one day with Tuesday’s customers having Wednesday pick-up, and so on, through Saturday, May 30 which will be Friday’s collection day.

The Republic Services Transfer Station in Galena, Kansas (that accepts bulky items from Joplin residential trash customers) will be closed on Saturday, May 23 through Monday, May 25 for the Memorial Day holiday. The transfer station will reopen on Tuesday, May 26. During general operations, the transfer stations hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 12 noon to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The City of Joplin Recycling Center will be open as usual on Saturday, May 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Recycling Center is always closed on Mondays. The Recycling Center is open to everyone regardless of residency. The center accepts all traditional recyclables, and provides free packing materials while supplies last. Hours are Tuesday and Thursday 2 to 6 p.m., and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The City of Joplin and Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste Services) has a contract that determines the observed holidays. Designated holidays that move the trash collection day forward by one day include New Year’s Day, Christmas Day, and Independence Day, if they fall on a weekday, using Saturday to catch up on collections. If these designated holidays fall on a weekend, there will be no change in schedule. Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving are also designated holidays. Since they always fall on a Monday and Thursday respectively, the trash pick-up schedule will move to the next day using Saturday to catch up on collections.

For more information contact Mary Anne Phillips at the City of Joplin, 624-0820 Ext. 501 or Republic Services at (800) 431-1507.
