Wonders of the Night Sky program scheduled at Carver Monument

(From George Washington Carver National Monument)

On Saturday, February 10th, you are invited to Wonders of the Night Sky, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at George Washington Carver National Monument.

This free program begins with a 30-minute indoor program, followed by a night sky tour. Join park staff and volunteers from the Sugar Creek Astronomical Society for this special after-dark-in-the park event.

The sky is the largest natural resource at George Washington Carver National Monument. Because of light pollution, natural darkness is becoming rare, and national parks are great places to find the right kind of darkness for outstanding night-time sky viewing. Visitors will learn about celestial navigation, star stories, lunar phases, and the effects of light pollution. George Washington Carver's life story will be told while viewing seasonal constellations.

Telescopes will be provided to enhance viewing opportunities. Young astronomers will earn a special Junior Ranger Night Explorer patch and certificate by completing learning activities about the night sky. The visitor center will open at 5:30 p.m. Dress for the weather. Call the park or check the social media for program updates. In case of inclement weather the program will be canceled.

Administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver - scientist, educator, and humanitarian.

The park is located two miles west of Diamond, Missouri on Highway V, then ¼ mile south on Carver Road. For more information, please call the park at 417-325-4151 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., visit the park website at www.nps.gov/gwca, or visit the park Facebook page.

Holocaust survivor speaks to McDonald County students

(From the McDonald County R-1 School District)

Today was a remarkable day at McDonald County High School as our students had the privilege of hearing firsthand from Holocaust survivor, Erika Schwartz.

Her life story, born in a Hungarian Nazi ghetto and emerging as one of the few survivors of her family, is a testament to resilience and the human spirit.

Erika's visit is a rare and impactful opportunity for our students to connect with history, fostering empathy and understanding. With only around 240,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors worldwide including around 39,000 in the United States, Erika represents a living link to an important period in history.

Cherokee County man charged with multiple felonies after standoff at Baxter Springs home

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

A Cherokee County man is in custody following a standoff with law enforcement in the 500 block of East 22nd Street in Baxter Springs early Friday afternoon.

Just after 2:00 p.m., Sheriff's Investigators attempted to arrest 43-year-old Casey Robert Bronke on an outstanding warrant for Unlawful Distribution of a Controlled Substance.

Bronke allegedly barricaded himself inside the home and threatened to shoot and kill law enforcement.

Additional units from the Baxter Springs Police Department and Cherokee County Sheriff's Office responded and following the brief standoff, Bronke was taken into custody and several firearms were seized.

In addition to the original drug distribution warrant, Bronke now faces charges of Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, Criminal Possession of a Firearm and Felony Interference with Law Enforcement.
