Joplin use tax proposition subject of latest Newsmakers program

(From the City of Joplin)

The upcoming Newsmakers interview program on KGCS-TV features information about “Proposition Action” that appears on the ballot of the upcoming November election.

On Tuesday, November 2, Joplin voters will answer a question whether to collect a local use tax on items purchased from out-of-state vendors through the internet or by catalog and shipped to Joplin for use.

A use tax is applied to the same type of products subject to sales tax when purchased in a store here in Joplin. Citizens would never pay both. It’s one or the other depending on where the goods are purchased. The use tax would be collected at the same rate as the current sales tax (3.125%).Proposition Action is the only question on the ballot in both Jasper and Newton Counties for this election.

The interview segment with Joplin City Manager Nick Edwards and Citizens Committee for Proposition Action Chairman Rob O’Brian discuss how revenues will be used to improve the community by meeting the City Council Goals through the 2021 Action Plans. Joplin City Council established an Implementation Committee to review progress and efficiency of the proposed plans.

The show will air on KGCS-TV at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. through Thursday, October 28 p.m. It can also be views on the station’s YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdQ8mrncFks.

For additional information about Proposition Action, citizens can visit the City’s website at joplinmo.org/elections . For questions or to request more information, contact Lynn Onstot, Public Information Officer, at 417-624-0820, ext. 1204.

Newsmakers is produced by KGCS-TV, a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University. Programming may be seen over the air on channel 21 and on regional cable television systems

Crowder College adding golf, cross country, women's soccer

(From Crowder College)

The Crowder College Board of Trustees were presented and approved the expansion of athletic programs by Tiffany Slinkard, Vice President of Student Affairs.

The athletic expansion would include: Women’s Soccer; Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Men’s and Women’s Golf.

These additions are being made in an effort to adapt to the changing needs of our students and community in athletics.

“We are proposing these sports due to their low cost to start and maintain and additional engagement of an approximately 57 students,” stated Slinkard.

These programs will make Crowder a more competitive choice for student-athletes and those who wish to have additional experiences.

Coaches for Cross Country and Golf would be part-time, while the women’s soccer coach would be a full-time position. Many competitions would provide both teams to compete on the same day, requiring less travel expense.

Crowder College currently participates in National Junior College Athletic Association Division I programs in Men’s Baseball and Soccer; Women’s Basketball and Softball; and Co-Ed eSports.

Carthage R-9's Kayla Fultz selected for National History Day fall webinar series

(From National History Day)

College Park, MD – This autumn, National History Day® (NHD) selected Ms. Kayla Fultz, Carthage Junior High School and Carthage High School in Carthage, Missouri* for the fall professional development program entitled Inspiring Student Research with the Library of Congress.

Now in its second year, this online course focuses on using Library of Congress primary and secondary sources to develop and support student research skills and is a feature of NHD’s membership in the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Consortium.

The learning modules support NHD’s 2022 theme Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.

The course includes four live webinars with an expert historian, and culminates in creating an individual plan for teachers to use resources from the Library of Congress in their classroom in the upcoming semester.

“We are fortunate to have this sustained partnership with the Library of Congress as a TPS Consortium member. Some of the most dedicated educators and subject matter experts work closely with the program’s participants,” said National History Day Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn.

“The teachers in this course develop crucial skills in locating and analyzing primary documents. They also discuss how to use primary documents in the classroom, learning a variety of pedagogical approaches that will benefit students’ learning for many years.” There are 210 teachers enrolled for the fall 2021 course. Upon completing the series, the teachers will have demonstrated the ability to pair Library of Congress resources with active learning strategies to inspire, engage, and support their students. Participants earn professional development credits upon course completion.

Joplin Public Library appoints two new librarians

(From the Joplin Public Library)

Joplin Public Library is thrilled to announce the appointment of two brand new librarian positions.

The addition of new librarian appointments are rare for the Library, with the last unique job addition taking place in 2006, when a teen services librarian was added.

On August 2, the Joplin Public Library promoted Jason Sullivan, a reference assistant, to the newly created role of electronic resources librarian, and on September 27, welcomed Derek Moser as its first adult programming librarian. There has been a strongly perceived need for both of these positions and their addition will likely provide a significant enhancement to patron services.

The new positions come with some exciting opportunities. Moser will coordinate in-house and outreach programs for adults, assist users with research, reader’s advisory, and other services, and strive to connect with community partners. Sullivan will manage and support access to the Library’s digital information resources, coordinate interlibrary loan services and administer the integrated library system.

Sullivan’s longevity and dedication to the Library, combined with his educational experience and the skills acquired in the Reference Department make him an ideal fit for his new position. He holds a Masters in Library Science from Kent State University, a Masters in Education from University of Missouri and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from University of Denver, and has worked in the Library’s reference department since 2007.

Moser’s education, work experience and professional skill set make him a noteworthy addition to the Library team. He holds a Masters in Library Science from the University of Kentucky, a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from MidAmerica Nazarene University, and is a veteran of the Joplin Public Library where he previously worked from 2016 to 2018. First, as a children’s library assistant and then later as the assistant circulation supervisor. In 2018, he accepted the library director role at the Seth Wilson Library at Ozark Christian College.

Weir man arrested for domestic battery, kidnapping

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

On October 25, 2021, Cherokee County Deputies arrested 42-year-old Matthew Billington, of Weir on allegations of Aggravated Domestic Battery and Kidnapping.

The arrest comes following an investigation into a physical altercation with a household member and alleged efforts to keep the victim, who sustained injuries during the incident, from escaping and seeking help.

"As Domestic Violence Awareness comes to an end, this incident serves as a reminder that domestic violence is serious and nobody should live in fear of being physically assaulted by someone they are in a relationship with.

"Anyone who is experiencing an abusive relationship is encouraged to call one of our local domestic violence resources, Safehouse Crisis Center at 1-800-794-9148 or the Kansas Crisis Center at 1-888-END-ABUSE," stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

Missouri Southern to hold Mass Band Day

(From Southern News Service)

When Missouri Southern’s Lion Pride Band takes the field for their halftime show on Saturday, Oct. 30, they’ll be joined by high-school musicians from around the area.

The annual Mass Band Day is a chance for band students to perform at the collegiate level while making connections with the university’s music faculty and marching band members.

“We’ll do an opening number by ourselves, and then the area high-school bands will join us on the field for the rest of the performance,” said Dr. Brandon Robinson, visiting director of bands at MSSU.

“When they arrive that morning, our music faculty will break them up into sections to work with them and get to know the high-school students,” he said. “Mass Band Day is a great recruiting opportunity. It allows us to build relationships with the students, and for them to see what game day is all about and be part of our band for a day. Hopefully, they’ll want to continue on and become future Lions.”

Area schools participating in the Halloween-themed halftime show include Webb City High School, Diamond High School and Seneca High School.

They will arrive at 10 a.m., then do sectional work with MSSU faculty starting at 10:30 a.m. Students will eat lunch in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center and then attend the football game vs. Missouri Western at 2 p.m.

Robinson joined MSSU this fall as visiting director of bands, having spent more than 20 years as a music educator, clinician and drill designer. He says the transition could not have gone more smoothly.

“Typically, first years everywhere – whether you’re teaching junior high or at the college level – are tough because you don’t know the way to do certain things, and you don’t know the students yet.

“But the band has been great, and this has absolutely been the smoothest transition I’ve ever had. Kudos to the leadership here, including our assistant band director, Michael Oglesby, and our two great drum majors. They make my job much easier.”

Joplin couple arrested on burglary charges

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

A Joplin Missouri couple were taken into custody after Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a reported burglary just outside of Galena Monday afternoon.

Upon arriving, deputies arrested 42-year-old Raymond Spink and 50-year-old Barbara Grunklee, who were allegedly attempting to steal car parts and scrap metal.

Both suspects are being held in the Cherokee County Jail on allegations of Burglary, Theft and Criminal Damage to Property.

Missouri Southern to hold safe Halloween event

(From Southern News Service)

The Residence Life Association and the Campus Recreation Department at Missouri Southern State University will sponsor a Safe Halloween event on Sunday, Oct. 31.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second floor of Billingsly Student Center. Families can bring their children to trick-or-treat in a safe environment.

Josh Doak, director of Residence Life, said this year’s event will look a little different from previous years.

“The event will be scaled back for COVID safety reasons,” he said. “It will allow kids to walk more quickly through the candy stations and prevent large clusters of people from congregating.”

Craft stations and games will not be offered this year, he said.

Admission is free and open to the public.
