Jasper Police: We will continue to be deeply involved in our community in 2017

(From the Jasper Police Department)

2016 was a very good year we believe for the Jasper Police Department and the citizens of Jasper.

We were able to do some good things for the kids and we believe we helped make the town a better place to live in as far as visiting with the criminal element and making it clear that this is not a "safe" town to come and hide and do criminal activity.

Some have chosen to move on from Jasper and live elsewhere, we do wish them luck.

We also made it a point to reach out and strengthen relationships with the youth in town, which is very important we believe.

In 2017, you have our promise that we will continue building on being involved in community events for the kids and we will continue to not welcome those who are there to do bad things in Jasper.

Happy New Years from the Jasper Police Dept.! Please be safe.....

Newton County deputy accepted into Highway Patrol Recruit Class

(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)

This is Deputy Mario Cabrera. He started with us in the jail as a corrections officer and was later promoted to road deputy. Today is his last day with Newton County as he has been offered and accepted into the Missouri State Highway Patrol's 104th Recruit Class starting in January. He will spend six months in Jefferson City learning to become a Trooper at their training facility.

The MSHP doesn't know just how lucky they are to have Mario. Every day he came to work with a smile. He sincerely loves working in law enforcement and was a valued member of our team. Today we won't say goodbye, but we will say "See You Soon"!

Good luck Mario! We'll see you at graduation in June.

Joplin Museum to close for general maintenance work

(From the City of Joplin)

The Joplin History & Mineral Museum will be closed from Saturday, December 31, 2016 to Tuesday, January 10, 2017 in order for general maintenance and housekeeping chores to be completed. Several areas will also be updated and repainted during this time, and some collections relocated to different spaces in the Museum.

“This is our usual time for our staff to do some general upkeep and cleaning of the Museum,” said Brad Belk, Director of the Museum. “By closing for a short period, it allows us to do a little more extensive work that would otherwise block aisles or halls if we remained open. It gives us a chance to regroup and freshen some of the décor, so our visitors can enjoy a new perspective to the Museum upon reopening on January 10.”

Starting January 10, hours of the museum are: Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Wednesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is located in Schifferdecker Park, 7th and Schifferdecker, and their website can be viewed at www.joplin-museum.org . For additional information please call the museum at 417-623-1180.

Nancy Hughes devotion: Can I come in?

Key Verse

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

Devotion

Little five year old boys don’t usually want to play with girls putting on makeup – unless it is boring because there are no other boys around. That changes everything. At least it did for Jude, my grandson.

My four granddaughters had locked themselves in the bathroom and were trying on all my makeup and giggling as they put lipstick and eye shadow on each other.

On any other day Jude would not have cared because he and big brother Noah would have been playing games on their iPods or shooting baskets outside. But Noah was at a friend’s house and Jude was alone…and outnumbered. So he decided to see if the girls would let him play.

I heard him knocking – softly at first and then harder and harder – but no one would open the door. After a few minutes I heard his precious little voice pleading: “Hey girlies, let me in. I want to play, too. You can even put makeup on me.”

But the door remained shut.

I looked up to see Jude coming toward me with a pencil and paper. “I need you to write a note for me, Grandma, so I can put it under the door.”

He cupped his hands around my ear, whispering his message. My heart nearly broke in two as I wrote the following words on his paper. “It’s Jude. Please let me come in.”

Today’s Scripture also speaks of One standing at a door knocking and calling to those inside to open it. That person is Jesus. In our Key Scripture in Revelation 3:20, He says “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”

How incredible is that! Christ himself is standing outside His own church, asking permission to come in.

It is hard for me to comprehend the patience that Jesus has as He waits for us to open the door of our hearts and allow Him to enter. Ever gracious and loving, He would never barge in and demand to be a part of our lives. So why don’t we answer?

Perhaps we are too busy “putting on makeup” that the world has to offer and ignoring the knock and the voice of the One who longs to replace our temporary with His permanent.

If you are the one inside the locked door, my prayer today is that you would listen for the knock at the door of your heart and answer the voice of the Savior as He calls “Please let me come in.”

My Prayer for Today

Father, forgive me for being so tuned in to the world that I do not listen to Your voice or Your gentle knocking on my heart to come in to my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Reflection Points

Do you often find that you get so involved with the “noise” of everyday life that you do not hear the Lord speaking to your heart? What are some of the “noises” of life that compete with the voice of the Lord for your attention?

Application Steps

Plan ten minutes somewhere in your day for you to sit quietly and listen for the Lord’s voice speaking to your heart.Journal whatever comes to mind. Look up one Scripture that addresses His encouragement to you.

Power Verses

Revelation 3:20 (NIV) “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”

Hebrews 3:8 (NIV) “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts…”

Isaiah 55:3 (NIV) “Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live…”

Barton County deputies out in full force for DWI crackdown

(From the Barton County Sheriff's Office)

Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies will be out in full force as part of the annual statewide Holiday DWI “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” substance–impaired driving campaign. The campaign, which will include high-visibility enforcement throughout Barton County, will run from December 15, 2016 – January 1, 2017.

The effective nationwide substance–impaired driving campaign will include high-visibility enforcement, high-profile events, and will be supported by national paid advertising, creating a comprehensive campaign to curb substance impaired driving over the Holiday DWI “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign period from December 15, 2016 – January 1, 2017.

Barton County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies will be aggressively looking for substance-impaired drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving impaired.

Although it is illegal in all 50 States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico to drive impaired (having a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher), far too many people across the nation get behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol. The latest statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration underscore the serious nature of the nation’s continuing drunk driving epidemic.

“Every year, about one third of all motor vehicle traffic deaths involve one or more substance- impaired drivers or motorcycle operators,” said Mitchell Shaw. “Data indicates in 2015, 197 people were killed on Missouri’s roadways in crashes that involved at least one substance-impaired driver.” That works out to approximately one substance-impaired driver involved fatality every 1-3/4 days.

Mitchell Shaw added the Christmas and New Year’s Eve Weekend is particularly dangerous. During the Holiday DWI “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign December 18, 2015 – January 3, 2016, eleven (11) people were killed and twenty-five (25) seriously injured involving at least one substance-impaired driver.

“Research has shown that high-visibility enforcement like the ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign reduces substance–impaired driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent. By joining this nationwide effort, we will make Barton County’s roadways safer for everyone throughout the holiday,” said Mitchell Shaw.

“We want to remind everyone that getting behind the wheel impaired is a terrible idea. Unfortunately, not only does being under the influence impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely, it also impairs your judgment and good sense about whether you can, or should drive. If you have any doubt about your sobriety, do not get behind the wheel. If you do chose to drive impaired, you will be arrested. No warnings. No excuses,” Mitchell Shaw said.

Mitchell Shaw noted that being arrested for driving under the influence of any substance brings a wide range of negative consequences into one’s life. Substance–impaired drivers face jail time, loss of their driver licenses, and steep financial consequences such as higher insurance rates, attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job. When family, friends and co-workers find out, violators also often face tremendous personal embarrassment.

Joplin city offices to be closed December 26, January 2

(From the City of Joplin)

In recognition of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the City of Joplin offices will be closed on Monday, December 26 and Monday, January 2. This closing includes the Joplin Recycling Center, MAPS and the Sunshine Lamp Trolley services. Since the holidays fall on Sunday this year, closures are moved to the Monday following them.

Public Safety services (Police and Fire Departments) and Airport Operations will continue to operate throughout the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, as these departments run 24/7 throughout the year.

MAPS and the Sunshine Lamp Trolley services will be open and operate during their normal operating hours on both Saturday, December 24 and Saturday, December 31. The City of Joplin Recycling Center will be closed on Saturday, December 24 and December 31.

City Hall will be open their normal hours on Tuesday, December 27, and Tuesday, January 3.

In addition, during these holiday weeks, residential trash service and curbside recycling does NOT change since the holiday falls on Sunday, a day that does not offer service.

For more information, contact Lynn Onstot, Public Information Officer at 624-0820, ext. 204.

Joplin Police Department offers tips for dealing with holiday traffic

(From the Joplin Police Department)

If you have spent any time at all on Range Line this week, it’s quite clear that the Christmas shopping season is in full swing. Traffic is heavy, and we have seen more minor crashes than usual. Most of them have been minor damage, but just enough to put a damper on your week. We like to meet new people, but we don’t want to meet you because of a traffic crash or a stop. Below are some friendly tips to keep you safe and your car in one piece:

- Keep a safe distance between cars. (a minimum of one vehicle length for every 10 Mph you are traveling) Following too close is easily the number one crash contributor in Joplin. It’s no contest between other factors, so put some distance between you.

- Leave a few minutes early and expect some congestion.

- Don’t be distracted. There are a lot of cars on the road, so give it your full attention. You can text, call, eat, or check your hair later!

- Slow down, take your time, don’t be aggressive…. That causes crashes, we know!

- Don’t pull out and drive down the center turn lane while trying to merge. It’s a turn lane, for left turns!

- Watch the stoplights. When it turns RED, STOP!!! No, seriously, Stop!

- If you are in a crash and no one in any of the vehicles are injured, move your cars out of the road if they will drive. Secondary crashes have a higher injury rate statistically, so let’s keep everyone safe.

- Don’t follow too close, put some distance between you can the car in front. It’s so important, it deserves a repeat!

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday season. These tips will help you do just that!

Nancy Hughes devotion: My mother's Christmas wish

Key Verse

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV)

Devotion

When I was a little girl, the number one question I asked all my family before December 25th was “What do you want for Christmas?” I asked my sisters and my brother, my mother and my father.
It was a huge question for me because my funds were limited to a small allowance each week plus whatever I could dig out from under the sofa cushions.

After my siblings and I eventually all married and moved away, my mother’s answer to that question remained the same year after year.

“I want all my children home,” she would smile. “Nothing more. That would be the best gift for Christmas. It’s my Christmas wish.” No matter how hard I tried to change the way in which I asked that same question, the answer never changed.

I really didn’t understand why that was the only Christmas gift my mother wanted. Until my children grew up, married and moved away. Until the phone calls began with “Hi Mom. December is going to be here before you know it. What do you want for Christmas?”

And of course, because I finally realized just what my mother meant, my answer has remained the same year after year. “More than anything, I want all my children home on Christmas.”

Look at John 3:16, today’s Key Scripture. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Our Heavenly Father desires the same thing for His children: home with Him for eternity. The cost? No looking under sofa cushions for extra change. No hoarding an allowance in order to pay for a gift.

The price for all His children to be able to come home has been paid in full by Jesus at the cross.
As mothers, we completely understand that having our children home for Christmas is the best gift of all. How much more our Heavenly Father desires that His children will turn to Him and accept the beautiful priceless gift of salvation wrapped up in the mercy, forgiveness and love of Jesus, so they can be home with Him for eternity.

My Prayer for Today

Father, I praise You and thank You for Your beautiful gift of eternal life to all who believe in You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Reflection Points

Do you find that there are times when you take the gift of salvation and eternal life for granted? If so, why do you think you feel that way?

Application Steps

Journal the different Scriptures that talk about the promise of eternal life with the Lord.

Memorize one of those Scriptures each week and share it with a friend or family member.

Power Verses

John 3:16 (NIV) “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

II Peter 3:9 (NIV) “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

I Timothy 2:3-4 (NIV) “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

MSSU dean publishes book on achieving success with a plan

(From Southern News Service)

Drawing on his experience transitioning from a two-decade career as a physician to healthcare administration, Dr. Richard Schooler has authored a book focusing on achieving success with a strategic plan.

“Planning for Organizational Success: A Leadership Guide to Achieving Success with a Plan” – published by Dorrance Publishing Company in Pittsburgh, Penn. – offers a message he believes many young leaders are missing as they pursue their education.

Schooler, now the Dean of Health Sciences at Missouri Southern State University, practiced as an OB/GYN physician in Joplin before becoming medical director and director of medical education for Freeman. In 2006, he was named the hospital’s chief medical officer, and in 2013 the executive vice president and chief operating officer.

“I didn’t have a business background, so the first few years in my role as a health-care executive had a steep learning curve,” he said. “But it was important for me to evolve through that to do what I ended up doing.”

That experience, along with leading the process of creating a strategic plan for the hospital following the devastating May 22, 2011, tornado that struck Joplin, helped him develop an appreciation for the importance of leadership.

About a year and a half ago, he began to put his thoughts to paper about the critical importance of planning for organizations.

“There are all kinds of books out there on how to write a strategic plan,” he said. “What I really want to share is how to achieve success with a plan … how to make it work.”

The book also focuses the dynamics of leadership as well as the importance of adaptability and accountability.

Available via Amazon, the Dorrance Publishing online bookstore and by contacting Dr. Schooler, book sales will help promote a new academic program at Missouri Southern.

“One-hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the Missouri Southern Foundation to an account that will be used for promotion of a new degree and curriculum I want to develop under the Health Sciences umbrella – a bachelor’s of health care leadership and management,” said Schooler.

“There’s a huge industry out there, and there’s a real need for it.”

Bobby Brown, K9 Pax named Joplin Police officers of the month

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Officer of the Month Bobby Brown and K9 Pax
November 2016

(Some details were removed due to being sensitive information in on-going cases)

Throughout the month of November, K-9 Officer Brown utilized his partner K-9 Pax with assisting in locating and apprehending suspects who had fled from officers.

On November 22, 2016 Officer Caleb Johnson attempted to stop a black Kia passenger car on Interstate 44, for the owner having a felony burglary warrant. The vehicle failed to yield and fled from Officer Johnson. K-9 Officer Brown later located the vehicle but the driver had fled on foot. K-9 announcements were made but due to no response, K-9 Pax was deployed to attempt to track the suspect. K-9 Pax was able to locate and apprehend the suspect who was hiding in the woods, near a creek bank. The driver was identified as Robert J. Smith and was arrested for 4 felony warrants, 3 misdemeanor warrants, Driving While Revoked, Careless and Imprudent Driving and Resisting Arrest by fleeing.

On November 27, 2016 Officers responded to Outback Steakhouse in reference to a vehicle theft in progress. The suspect, Jason Fuqua, was attempting to steal a vehicle from a female who was putting her grandchildren into the vehicle. Despite one child already being in the vehicle, Fuqua still attempted to take the vehicle but was unsuccessful, due to not having the keys. As Fuqua was attempting to steal the vehicle, he pushed the female down. When an Outback employee came outside and confronted Fuqua, he fled the area, dropping two purses which had been stolen from Outback employee’s vehicles. Fuqua fled south to the Interstate, turned around and then fled across the Interstate as officers got close.

K-9 Officer Brown and K-9 Pax responded to the area of F.A.G. K-9 announcements were made and despite being close by and hearing the commands, Fuqua still failed to comply with officers’ commands. K-9 Pax was deployed and was able to locate and apprehended the suspect. Fuqua was arrested for Robbery 2nd Degree, felony tampering with a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and a parole absconder warrant.

K-9 Officer Brown takes pride in being a Police K-9 handler for the department. Despite tracking of fleeing suspects being one of the most difficult deployments for a K-9 handler, K-9 Officer Brown continues to work to improve and be successful in this field. Thanks to K-9 Officer Brown’s work ethic, training, knowledge and motivation, numerous suspects have been located and taken into custody safely.

K-9 Officer Brown and his K-9 Pax are truly an asset to the Joplin Police Department.
