Monett teen injured in accident south of Ritchey

A Monett teen was injured in a one-vehicle accident 12:06 p.m. Friday on Route M, two miles south of Ritchey.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Toyota Scion TC driven by Alisa B. Moua, 18, Monett, swerved to miss an animal, traveled off the roadway and overturned.

Moua was treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Oronogo woman seriously injured in head-on collision on 96

An Oronogo woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident 8 a.m. Saturday on MO 96, two miles west of Halltown.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2000 Jeep Cherokee driven by Madison M. Perez, 23, Oronogo, crossed the center line in heavy fog and struck a 2019 Freightliner Cascadia driven by David R. Royer, 65, Galena, head on.

Perez was treated for serious injuries at Mercy Hospital, Springfield.

Joplin, Miami children injured in four-vehicle chain reaction crash on 43

Two people were injured in a four-vehicle accident 1:45 p.m. Sunday on MO 43, one mile south of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2006 Hyundai Elantra driven by Jade E. Tolbird, 22, West Monroe, Louisiana, struck a 2017 Nissan Sentra driven by David A. Zimmer, 40, Miami, Oklahoma in the rear.

The impact caused the Zimmer vehicle to hit a 2018 Honda Accord driven by David S. Palmer, 49, Joplin, in the rear. The Palmer vehicle then struck a 2015 Dodge Ram driven by Dennis E. Eads, 60, Seneca, in the rear.

A passenger in the Palmer vehicle, a 10-year-old girl, and a passenger in the Palmer vehicle, a nine-year-old girl were treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Twelve-year-old Carthage boy seriously injured in mini-bike accident

A Carthage boy was injured in a one-vehicle accident 2:45 p.m. Saturday on Pembrook Road at County Road 182, three miles north of Alba.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2007 Honda mini-bike driven by a 12-year-old Carthage boy went through an intersection into a ditch and struck a pole. The boy was ejected.

The boy was treated for serious injuries at Mercy McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.

City of Joplin to test sirens during Statewide Tornado Drill

Severe Weather Awareness Week will be recognized from March 1 to 5 to help Missourians learn more about potential severe weather and how to prepare for possible weather conditions in upcoming comings.

The National Weather Service (NWS), State Emergency Management Agency and Keith Stammer, Joplin and Jasper County’s Emergency Manager, urge Joplin citizens and all Missourians to use this week’s resources to learn about severe weather and how to protect themselves in various scenarios.

The highlight of the week is the statewide tornado drill which will be initiated by the NWS at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2. Should hazardous weather be a threat, the drill will be postponed until 10 a.m. on March 4.

This tornado drill will be observed by the City of Joplin by sounding the warning sirens for a full three minutes, the same amount that would occur in an actual warning. In addition to the City’s procedures during the drill, the National Weather Service and the State Emergency Management Agency will be conducting their tests using various news mediums and alert systems. This test will cause NOAA Weather Radios to activate.

During the annual Statewide Tornado Drill, citizens are reminded to practice taking shelter. If a tornado shelter is not available, the safest shelter location is a windowless basement or an interior room in the lowest level of a building. Put as many walls between you and the tornado. Other safe locations for businesses and schools include interior stairways and tornado safe rooms.

As this drill kicks off the 2021 Severe Weather Awareness Week, observed from March 1 - 5, Stammer reminds everyone to be proactive and prepare for weather safety. Preparing today may make the difference in surviving the storms to come this spring. He also encourages people to seek appropriate notification system and reminds the public about the warning sirens’ purpose.

“The sirens provide a warning for anyone who is out of doors to go indoors, if possible, and take shelter,” he said. “People indoors cannot always expect to hear the outdoor warning sirens.”

Stammer encourages residents to utilize a NOAA Weather Radio that provides a warning signal when the area is under a watch or a warning. “The advantage of having a weather radio is that you hear the alerts directly from the National Weather Service, and are kept current of the warning status.” Weather radios are available at local retailers.

Oronogo woman killed, Liberal man seriously injured in head-on collision in 43

 

An Oronogo woman was killed and a Liberal man injured in a two-vehicle collision 5:38 p.m. Thursday on MO 43, two miles north of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2002 Chevrolet 2500 truck driven by Ryan K. O'Neal, 44, Liberal, crossed the center line and struck a 2003 Toyota 4Runner driven by Seveie M. Davison, 23, Oronogo head on.

Davison was pronounced dead by Dr. Darain Arman in the emergency room at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, at 6:30 p.m.

O'Neal was treated for serious injuries at Mercy.

The fatality was the 20th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Minutes of Previous Meetings

Minutes of the January 25, regular meeting minutes were approved as written and previously distributed. Minutes of the February 12, Board Retreat meeting minutes were approved as written and previously distributed.

Financial Reports

Mr. Wood noted the monthly cash flow statement. Dr. Coltharp reviewed the checks written, selecting various checks on each page to point out. Board Members asked questions associated with various bills in the report. Mr. Wood noted two sets of checks needing approval for January 12 – January 29, 2021 and February 1 – February 5, 2021 Checks in the amount of $633,030.44, $274,885.69 were approved ON MOTION by Al Chapman, seconded by Diane Andris, and unanimously carried. The remainder of the current fund balances and agency accounts were reviewed. 

 

Room and Board Proposal for 2021-2022

Mark Aubuchon requested approximately a five percent increase for single occupancy and approximately a three percent increase for double occupancy rooms in Rough Rider Village. They are also requesting approximately three percent increase at Brown. Mr. Aubuchon is also working with Great Western Dining on the dining plans and price that is available to the students right now. The 2021-2022 increase for the meal plan rates will be an approximate 3% increase.

A MOTION to approve the increase rates to Room and Board for 2021-2022 was made by Larry Vancuren, seconded by Al Chapman and unanimously carried.

Personnel

Dr. Coltharp recommended approval of the Resignation of Layne Sleeth, SSS Advisor Cassville, Janet Ross, Nursing Instructor, Penny Burch, Records Assistant, Mary Rogers, Communications Instructor and Linda Douglas, Practical Nursing Coordinator. A MOTION to approve their resignations with thanks for their service was made by Vickie Barnes, seconded by Rick Butler and unanimously carried.

Dr. Coltharp recommended approval of the Retirement of Ron Cole, Political Science Instructor. A MOTION to approve his retirement with thank for their service was made by Rick Butler, and seconded by Diane Andris and unanimously carried.

Tuition & Fees Recommendation, Fall 21, Spring 22 & Summer 22

Dr Coltharp spoke about how low Crowder’s tuition currently is compared to other colleges in the region. Dr Coltharp is recommending a two dollar increase ($2.00) to in-district students, a six dollar increase ($6.00) for out of district, and a nine dollar increase ($9.00) to international students. Dr Coltharp also recommended adding a technology fee of ten dollars ($10). Dr Coltharp recommended an increase on the following fees; two dollar increase ($2.00) Institutional Support Fee and two dollar increase ($2.00) Safety and Security Fee. He also recommended reducing the following fees; Online Course fee by three dollars ($3.00), and Flex Course Fee by three dollars ($3.00).

Policy Revision: 2.19.2 Employee & Family Tuition Waiver

Dr Coltharp stated that the policy is not clearly defined on dependent and age of dependent covered on the employee tuition waiver. The updated policy would clearly define both the dependent and the age of dependent.

Print Shop Review

Gary Dudash spoke about how the print shop is able to accommodate all print jobs for all campuses. The print shop has been saving money due to buying in bulk and that savings is passed down to all print jobs. Gary presented the 2019-2020 department review for the Print Shop.

Math and Science Program Review

Shauna Foust informed the group that the Math and Science Department has had four full time instructors during the Summer 2020 semester. Ms. Foust also stated that their department has had a lot of instructors retire and the passing of some of their instructors as well which has been difficult for the department. The department has seen an increase in the number of students for Math and Science Programs. Ms. Foust spoke about how Math Pathways has changed the department and what classed they offer to students.

Student Involvement

Jamie Ward presented the Student Clubs and organizations on campus. Ms. Ward stated that over the last three years student involvement has decreased and the role of Associate Vice President of Student Affairs is to help increase student involvement and allow students to be part of the campus decision making processes. Starting next month student clubs will have representatives present to the Board of Trustees and talk about their program.

President's Update

Dr Coltharp announced that our Phi Theta Kappa has received the Reach Award and to Congratulate them at such as great goal that was obtained by the group. Dr Coltharp reminded everyone that March 5, 2021 at 9:00 is the Board Retreat and it will take place at the McDonald County Campus. The next Board Meeting will be Tuesday, March 30, 2021, and it will be on Zoom.

Diamond man injured crashing into tree

A Diamond man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 6:45 p.m. Wednesday on Lime Kiln Drive, seven miles north of Neosho.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire driven by Richard A. Bratt, 68, Diamond, traveled off the left side of the roadway and crashed into a tree.

Bratt was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Stella man cited for DWI following injury accident on 76

A Stella man was cited for driving while intoxicated on drugs following a two-vehicle injury collision 9 p.m. Wednesday on MO 76, one mile east of Rocky Comfort.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2018 Toyota Tundra driven by Daryl B. Rutherford, 40, Stella, lost control, crossed over the center line and struck a 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada driven by Ban C. Sang, 38, Rocky Comfort.

Rutherford, who was also cited for failure to drive on the right half of the roadway, no insurance and for not wearing a seat belt, was treated for serious injuries at Mercy Hospital, Springfield.

Police respond to report of active shooter at Northpark Mall

Earlier this morning the Joplin Police Department received a 911 call of a report of an active shooter situation at the mall at 101 N. Rangeline. 

Officers immediately responded to the scene and began clearing the mall and starting an investigation. 

At this time there has been no evidence found indicating that a shooting had taken place and officers have cleared the scene. The investigation into the reported threats is ongoing at this time. 

The Joplin Police Department want the public to know that there is no identified threat to the public from this incident at this time. We take these situations very seriously as to ensure the safety of citizens and visitors of Joplin.

Nominations being accepted for Joplin Historic Preservation Awards

The Joplin Historic Preservation Commission will accept nominations from the public for the 2021 Joplin Historic Preservation Awards beginning Monday, March 1, 2021. Nomination forms may be downloaded from the City of Joplin’s website at http://www.joplinmo.org/119/Historic-Preservation-Commission . 

The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 30, 2021. Completed nominations may be mailed or dropped off to: Planning & Community Development, Joplin City Hall, 602 S. Main Street, Joplin, MO 64801 or submitted via email to twalters@joplinmo.org.

The Joplin Preservation Awards Committee will meet in early May to score nominations and make their final recommendations to the Commission during their regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 18, 2021. Awardees will be announced the following day. 

The Joplin Historic Preservation Awards were established in 2019 to recognize people who’ve made significant contributions to historic preservation in the City of Joplin, Missouri. You may nominate potential awardees for one of three awards:

The Leslie Simpson Award – Awarded to an individual who has made significant contributions to historic preservation in Joplin by way of preservation administration, education, events, outreach, planning, research, or service.

The Jeff & Carolina Neal Award – Awarded to people who have made significant developments to historic preservation in Joplin by way of developing and restoring/revitalizing buildings and property within Joplin’s commercial corridors.

The Murphysburg Award – Awarded to neighborhood groups or residential property owners – regardless of whether their properties are in Murphysburg proper – who demonstrate the capacity for and illustrate the preservation of their homes, whether through achieving Local Landmark status, Local Historic District Status, community/neighborhood development, or otherwise making significant contributions to heritage/historic preservation in Joplin.

Bodies of two Joplin men found in Cherokee County strip pits

Cherokee County authorities began searching area strip pits Tuesday night for two Joplin men, after their families reported they didn't return home following a day of fishing.

Around 1:00 a.m. early Wednesday morning, a Cherokee County Deputy Sheriff located the vehicle they had been in at Mined Wildlife Land #40, northwest of Columbus, near Northwest 70th and StarValley Road.

The bodies of 70-year-old Robert Sleep and 71-year-old Stephen LeMasters were both recovered from the water.

The initial investigation indicates both men fell through ice and drowned.

Although no foul play is suspected, autopsies will be conducted in Kansas City.

Joplin man killed in structure fire at 223 S. Galena

On February 23, 2021 at 4:13 pm the Joplin Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call of a structure fire at 223 S. Galena Avenue in Joplin. Members of the Joplin Fire Department and Joplin Police Department responded to the scene. 

During the incident, a deceased adult male was found inside the residence. Detectives with the Joplin Police Department responded to the scene and initiated a death investigation.

 

The deceased individual has been identified as Neal E. Fiscus, age 60 of Joplin. An autopsy has been scheduled for this Friday. 

Any additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Project to convert MSSU hillside into wildlife habitat

There’s a steady series of thumps and scrapes as the students work their way down the hillside on the east side of Nixon Hall.

It’s a cold, blustery Sunday afternoon. Armed with hoes, pitchforks and other implements, they work to rough up the ground in front of them to expose the soil.

While it may not seem like the most ideal time to think about planting, the weather is actually perfect to begin transforming the area into a colorful home to a variety of wildflowers, says Dr. Katie Kilmer, assistant professor of biology and environmental health at Missouri Southern.

While the region is still firmly in the grasp of winter, the process of cold stratification will help prepare the seeds to germinate.

“Our longterm goal is that this entire steep hillside that’s just grass and kind of stressful for our landscaping crew to have to mow … to convert all of this over to a wildflower habitat,” she says. “It could be a community resource, a campus resource that could be used as an outdoor classroom, and from an ecological context to attract more pollinators.”

Nearly 20 students have gathered on this afternoon to begin planting, though the work to prepare the area for this day began back in the Fall 2020 semester.

Bobbi Monroe, a senior biology major, began the prep work last year as part of a service-learning project.

“It was actually a slow process,” she says, taking a moment to pause from her work scraping up the ground along the hillside. “We had to clear off the grass and spray herbicide on both sides of the hill. It took the whole course of last semester because everything didn’t die right away.”

Dr. Jason Willand, chair of the biology and environmental health department, worked with a group of students in late January to do a controlled burn on both sides of the building to help prepare the ground.

“It was fairly windy that day,” says Gabe McClain, a sophomore biology major who assisted with the burn and came back to help with the planting. “We started at one end and worked toward the building because that would be a good fire stop.”

While he’s earning extra credit for his work on this afternoon, he says he would be here without it.

“I want to get into wildlife biology, so I wanted to be here to help with the whole process. I’m excited to see what it turns into.”

The mixture of sand and wildflower seeds don’t seem to want to work with the hand-cranked seed dispensers, so students are soon spreading the seed mixture by hand along the hillside. Once finished, they roll biodegradable burlap blankets over the hill to protect the seeds.

“We’re using all native wildflowers – a mix of about 30 to 40 different species that are appropriate for this kind of soil,” says Kilmer. “They’re all native Missouri plants, and all pollinator specific plants. The goal is to have things blooming over the entire course of the year.”

While some of the wildflowers will begin blooming this year, it will be next summer before the full results of their work will be on display. Black-eyed Susan, prairie blazing star, coneflowers, goldenrod, sunflowers, milkweed, ironweed and asters are among the variety of wildflowers being planted.

At the top of the hill, there are plans for a living fence, she says. Posts with steel cables running between will line the area, with native vining plants eventually covering them.

The project is a pilot run, with hopes to eventually expand the wildflower planting to more areas.

It was a long road to get to this day, says Monroe.

“But once the seed is down and we build the fence, we get to wait for the pretty stuff to happen,” she says.
