Crowder College reports fall enrollment

(From Crowder College)

Crowder College Fall 2021 enrollment has identified a head count of 3,989 students taking 37,977 hours. These numbers reflect currently enrolled students as of count day, September 14. This is a 5% decrease in credit hours and head count from fall 2020 with 39,993 and 4,197, respectively.

“I am very proud of the time and energy the faculty and staff have devoted to creating a safe and supportive learning environment where students can take classes with high academic standards,” stated Dr. Glenn Coltharp, President, Crowder College.

“Across the nation, most higher education institutions are facing a much higher drop in credit hours enrolled in by students. We interpret this numbers as our students recognizing not only the environment we have created at Crowder, but also the support for a community college education. The return on a student’s tuition is the best investment a student can make in his or her future.”

Enrollment in second 8-week classes which start the week of October 20 is still available. To enroll, a person should apply online: www.Crowder.edu and schedule an appointment for enrollment.

Enrollment number, new programs announced at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

Enrollment numbers for the Fall 2021 semester have been announced at Missouri Southern State University. There are currently 4,358 students enrolled in classes.

“We are committed to the success of each and every one of our outstanding students,” said Dr. Dean Van Galen, president of Missouri Southern.

The fall semester saw the rollout of several new programs and initiatives.

The university launched the new MOSO Merit Scholarship for first-time freshmen. 276 freshmen will be awarded nearly $1 million this academic year.

Students meeting the criteria for the Premier-level scholarship are eligible to receive $20,000 toward tuition costs – $2,500 per semester, renewable for eight consecutive semesters. Gold-level recipients are awarded $14,000, while those in the Green level receive $8,000.

This fall, Missouri Southern welcomed the first cohort of students in the new Global Leaders program.

Students are invited to participate in Global Leaders based on a combination of ACT and GPA scores. Each participating student will have access to $4,000 in private funds that can be used toward international travel, leadership development, undergraduate research or travel to academic conferences.

The Nursing Department has rolled out an updated and revised curriculum this fall, one that will ensure graduates are prepared to meet the demands of the challenging field. The MSSU program currently has 65 students, with another 80 students on the pre-nursing track.

The innovative curriculum utilizes current models of clinical judgment with an emphasis on reflective practice, reasoning skills, and partnering with students as they progress through the program. The focus is on interprofessional education, with the addition of several electives based upon the student's preference of specialty areas such as mental health or critical care.

The department recently announced a substantial gift from an anonymous donor which will help create a healthcare virtual reality simulation lab. It is expected to be ready for the start of the Fall 2022 semester.

Public meeting scheduled for stormwater project along Murphy Boulevard

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin will soon begin construction on a stormwater project near Lone Elm Road and Murphy Boulevard. The work includes replacing the existing double box culvert on Murphy Boulevard, west of Lone Elm Road, with a triple box culvert.

The improvements will allow for more efficient stormwater conveyance as well as an opportunity to increase safety for motorists by widening the road and installing curb and gutter.

An open house public meeting with City engineers and representatives of the City’s design engineer firm of Allgeier, Martin and Associates has been scheduled for Thursday, October 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria of Columbia Elementary School, 610 W. F. Street. Citizens are welcome to come any time during these hours to view the preliminary plans and ask questions about the upcoming project.

This project was included in the ¼-cent Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax approved by voters in August 2012.

If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to discuss the project, please contact Steven Martinez at 417-624-0820, ext. 1531 smartine@joplinmo.org or Dan Johnson at 417-624-0820, ext. 1538.

Cloud family named Jasper County Farm Family, honored at State Fair

(From University of Missouri Extension)

Chris and Michelle Cloud and family of Carthage were among the families honored during the 62nd annual Missouri Farm Family Day, Aug. 16 at the Missouri State Fair.

The Clouds family was selected as the Jasper County Missouri Farm Family by University of Missouri Extension in Jasper County and the local Farm Bureau. The family includes Kara, Kaitlyn, and Kallie.

Each year, the fair sets aside a day to recognize farm families from across the state that are active in their communities, involved in agriculture, and/or participate in local outreach and extension programs such as 4-H or FFA.

The annual event is sponsored by five partner agencies: the Missouri Farm Bureau; the Missouri Department of Agriculture; the Missouri State Fair Commissioners; the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; and MU Extension and Engagement.

The event showcases the impact Missouri Farm Families have on the economy and heritage of the state, said Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe. “These families are involved in agriculture activities in their communities and are active participants in local outreach and extension. As the premier showcase for Missouri agriculture, the Missouri State Fair is most certainly the appropriate place to celebrate these families.”

D&D Sexton celebrates 40th anniversary

(From Sen. Bill White, R-Joplin)

The 32nd Senatorial District is home to many outstanding businesses and manufacturers. One of those companies, D&D Sexton, Inc., recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Established in 1981 by Dean Sexton with only one truck and trailer, the company, which calls Carthage home, now employs more than 190 full-time employees and operates 130 tractors and 300 refrigerated trailers.

I was honored to join them as they celebrated their 40th anniversary and presented them with a Senate resolution.

From its humble beginnings, D&D Sexton, Inc., has grown into one of our country’s premier haulers of refrigerated goods. The Sexton family is the embodiment of the American Dream, and I am proud to call them members of our community.

Missouri Southern to hold regional college fair

(From Southern News Service)

More than 30 colleges and universities will be represented at the Regional College Fair from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, in Young Gymnasium at Missouri Southern State University.

The fair will be held in conjunction with the Missouri Association of College Admission Counseling (MOACAC). The non-profit organization’s mission is to help students and their families through the college selection process. Representatives from Kansas University, the Universities of Missouri, Crowder College and Missouri State University will be present, among many others.

“Students will be able to receive information from many different colleges and find out what opportunities are available to them. It is a great way to start coming to a decision on where they would like to spend the next four years of their lives,” said Abby Bishop, MSSU coordinator of campus visits.

High-school students, especially juniors and seniors, and their parents are encouraged to attend. Students can register for the fair at StriveFair.com.

Masks will be required for those in attendance.
