Summer enrollment up at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

Enrollment for summer classes is up 6 percent over 2017 at Missouri Southern State University.

A total of 2,064 students enrolled for summer classes at the university; up 115 over last year. Students enrolled in 10,949 credit hours, a 20 percent increase over last summer’s 9,089.

Summer enrollment has held steady over the last 10 years. The previous enrollment record was 1,983 students in 2010.

“This new increase shows students are recognizing the value of taking summer classes in order to stay on track to graduate on time,” said Cassie Mathes, director of University Relations & Marketing.

Missouri Southern is part of the Missouri Department of Higher Education’s new “15 to Finish” initiative. It encourages full-time students to complete 15 or more credit hours each semester in order to receive an associate’s degree in two years or a bachelor’s in four.

“Graduating on schedule allows students to enter the workforce sooner, which means earning an income rather than spending additional semesters in school and possibly accruing more student loans,” said Mathes.

The recent expansion of Pell Grants to cover summer classes is also likely a factor in the enrollment increase, she said. Earlier this month, U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt visited Missouri Southern to highlight the expansion, which he said could lead to as many as 20,000 more Missouri students taking summer classes at colleges and universities.

A 10-week summer session began May 21. The first-eight and four-week sessions will begin Monday, June 4, with the second four-week session beginning on Monday, July 2.

To register, students can meet with their advisor or stop by the Advising, Counseling & Testing Services office – Room 314 of Hearnes Hall. To view the summer schedule, visit www.mssu.edu/academics/classes.

Neosho men arrested on receiving stolen property, meth-related charge after Jasper traffic stop

(From the Jasper Police Department)

Recovered Stolen Property and Meth Related Drug Paraphernalia Arrest

On Wednesday, May 30th, 2018 at 11:46 am, a Jasper officer stopped a green 2003 Nissan X-Terra near the intersection of 4th St. and Mercer St., in reference to a traffic violation.

Contact was made with the occupants, Christopher Drum and Gary Drum, both of Neosho. The officer knows Christopher to be in possession of drugs. Gary came back with a probation and parole hit for burglary. Gary stated he had recently been released from prison.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Deputy George Datum and his K-9 “paw”tner, Holi, arrived on scene to assist.

A positive indication from K-9 Holi gave officers probable cause to search the vehicle. During the search, several Harley Davidson collectibles were found, as well as other collectibles, ipods, Army veteran collectibles and pocket watches, i-tune cards, a credit card with a females name, 2 guns and other items were found. It was suspected that the items were possibly stolen and/or taken during a burglary. Meth related drug paraphernalia was also found.

After paperwork with a possible victim was found in the property, the victim was contacted and was able to identify the property as his. He valued the property around $7,500. The property was returned to the victim.

After investigation, it was determined the property was stolen from a residence in Newton County.
Special thanks to K-9 Holi and Deputy Datum for their assistance. Because they responded and because of their training and experience, law enforcement was able to recover a high dollar amount of property that was stolen.
Please Note..... Both persons arrested are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Also thank you to Jasco dispatchers for helping with the case and getting things lined out with other agencies.

Photography exhibit planned at Spiva Art Gallery

(From Southern News Service)

"Kloes,” a special exhibition by photographer Tarrah Krajnak, will run Monday, June 4, through Thursday, July 19, in Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.

Born in Lima, Peru, Krajnak is an assistant professor of art at Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including shows at the SUR Biennial in Los Angeles, Art London, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Philadelphia Photographic Arts Center. She was recently awarded the Texas Photographic Society’s first National Photography Award and had a solo exhibition during this spring’s Fotofest Houston.

“Kloes” is a series of photographs taken by Krajnak in a century-old abandoned garment factory in Lansford, Penn.

“I am not immune to the simultaneous pleasure and horror of ruins,” Krajnak said in a statement. “I only had a couple hours to shoot this decrepit old building, entombment of an American industrial past, my grandfather’s and 107 years of forgotten garment workers.”

An opening reception will be offered from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 7, in the gallery.

Admission is free and open to the public. Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
