New enrollment center to open for Joplin R-8 students

(From Joplin Schools)

New Enrollment Center opening Aug. 3, 2015!
We are in the process of centralizing our new student enrollment. This will make the enrollment process faster and more convenient for parents. Our new Welcome Center is located at Memorial Education Center, 310 W. 8th St. Beginning Aug. 3, new students to the district will enroll at this location. We will also offer online pre-enrollment, enabling parents to complete much of the enrollment process at home.

Welcome to Joplin Schools!
Any school-age child residing within district boundaries and who meets legal and Board of Education requirements may enroll in Joplin Schools. New student enrollment (including kindergarten registration) will take place at Joplin Schools Welcome Center located at Memorial Education Center, 310 W. 8th St. (parking and entrance on Pearl Ave.) Enrollment begins Aug. 3, 2015.

For more information regarding attendance zones, click here. To verify which elementary school a child will attend, contact Joplin Schools Welcome Center at 417-625-5225.

Follow these three steps to become a Joplin Eagle!

Step 1: Pre-enroll online

If your child is new to Joplin Schools or is returning and was not enrolled in Joplin Schools at the end of the last school year, click on the link below to begin the pre-enrollment process. The link to pre-enrollment will be available beginning Aug. 3. If you do not have a computer available to you, computer kiosks are available at the Welcome Center to complete the pre-enrollment process.

Information you will need for the pre-enrollment process:

Phone numbers and addresses for primary contact and all parents/guardians for the student.
Names/phone numbers for Emergency Contacts.
If you have more than one child to enroll, you will have the option to add more children during the online enrollment process.

Step 2: Schedule an appointment and visit Joplin Schools Welcome Center

Call 417-625-5225 to schedule your visit. Walk-ins are welcome but preference will be given to those who have appointments.

Please bring the following to your Welcome Center appointment for all children you are enrolling:
Your photo ID (any valid state or federal government-issued photo ID is acceptable, such as a driver's license, state ID card, U.S. passport, military ID, or tribal photo ID)

Child's legal, state-issued birth certificate

Child's up-to-date immunization records as required by the State of Missouri

Child's Social Security Card (if available)

Proof of residency (examples of acceptable documents include: property tax statement, mortgage documents, house-closing documents, lease/rental agreement, construction contract with proposed occupancy date, current utility bill such as water, gas, electricity, or current credit card statement)
Proof of guardianship if the student lives within district boundaries with someone other than a parent
If applicable, any legal documents regarding custody arrangements, etc.

For students transferring from another district, please bring:
Name and address of the previous school attended or an unofficial transcript from that school
Special Education records, if applicable, such as an Individual Education Plan and a current diagnostic summary

Step 3: Tour your new school!

Once the enrollment process is complete, you can schedule a time to tour your new school and meet your principal and teachers.

For students attending Joplin High School/Franklin Technology Center, once your official transcripts have been received at the high school, a counselor will call you to schedule a time to visit the high school, register for classes, and complete the enrollment process. It generally takes two or three business days to receive transcripts.

Joplin Insider program tocuses on stormwater management

(From City of Joplin)

In the next program of Joplin Insider, viewers will learn more about the importance of stormwater management and how they can positively impact the system with just a few easy tips.

Public Information Officer Lynn Onstot visits with MaryAnne Phillips, Stormwater Educator and Joplin Recycling Coordinator, about keeping our waterways clean. Phillips states that much of the work can easily be done, and it begins with residents being good stewards of the environment. She demonstrates how water from our yards and fields enter the creeks through numerous ways, emphasizing that many of our lifestyle tasks may send chemicals or sediments into the water ways of Joplin, which then flow into larger streams and eventually empty into Grand Lake.

Joplin Insider, the City’s 30-minute interview television show, is in cooperation with KGCS-TV and the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University. This episode will air several times throughout the next few weeks including:

Sunday, July 26 at 9 p.m.

Tuesday, July 28 at 9 p.m.

Sunday, August 2 at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, August 4 at 6 p.m.

The program is also posted on the YouTube site by clicking on the link at the end of this article.

KGCS programming may be seen over the air on digital channel 22, and on regional cable television systems including Cable One, Mediacom and Suddenlink. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.

Joplin Police Department to hold DWI checkpoint

(From the Joplin Police Department)

The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities. In 2011,

Two hundred eighteen people were killed and 867 were seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver.

That’s why Joplin Police Department, along with the Southwest Missouri DWI Task Force, will conduct a DWI checkpoint this upcoming weekend.

Consequences of impaired driving include jail time, loss of driver licenses, and being required to have an ignition interlock installed. Insurance rates go up. Other financial hits include attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job or job prospects.

When family, friends and co-workers find out, violators can also face tremendous personal embarrassment and humiliation.

Joplin Police Department wants all drivers to realize that driving impaired is simply not worth all the consequences.

Joplin Public Library staff seeks ideas for adult makerspace

(From Joplin Public Library)

The staff of the Joplin Public Library is asking the public for ideas on an adult makerspace in the new facility. To facilitate the idea exchange, the staff is hosting a Focus Group session at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28 in the large meeting room in the Library at 300 South Main Street.

Makerspaces are creative, do-it-yourself (DIY) spaces where people gather to share ideas and expertise, as well as create, collaborate and learn from others. Library makerspaces vary in their offerings, ranging from simple craft supplies and tools to advanced software programs and more.
During the “makeYOURspace: Library Makerspace Focus Group", Library staff will talk about some of their ideas and ask participants to share theirs on how this space could be used.

The Joplin Public Library is moving to 1901 East 20th Street, with construction beginning this fall.
