Proclamation ceremony, artistic performances to highlight kickoff of Arts and Humanities Month in Joplin

(From Connect2Culture)

In accordance with National Arts & Humanities Month, Mayor Mike Seibert will officially proclaim the month of October as National Arts and Humanities Month in Joplin on Thursday, October 5, 5:00 p.m. at Spiva Park (4th and Main Street, Joplin, MO 64801).

National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM) is a nationwide collective recognition of the importance of culture in America. It is designed to encourage all Americans to explore new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong habit of active participation in the arts.

Public interest in the arts as well as the number of arts-related organizations and businesses in Joplin continues to grow. These organizations have had substantial impact both within the city and the region. The arts and humanities are being recognized for positively impacting quality of life, attracting visitors, and enhancing both cultural and economic growth. The nonprofit arts and cultural industry in Joplin generates $5.4 million in total economic activity annually, $452,000 in government revenue, and supports the full-time equivalent of 191 jobs.*

This proclamation ceremony is hosted by Connect2Culture and First Thursday ArtWalk. The Ozark Bards will play music from 4:45–5:05pm and a short dance performance by the Midwest Regional Ballet will follow the proclamation ceremony. Representatives of local arts organizations and businesses will be present to celebrate.

To encourage active participation in the arts and cultural events happening throughout Joplin, Connect2Culture has created an October 2017 calendar to be distributed at the ceremony. Information on the economic impact of Joplin’s arts and cultural non-profit organizations will also be available.

The proclamation ceremony will also celebrate the season finale of First Thursday ArtWalk. First Thursday ArtWalk is a sophisticated, yet festive event, for area artists, as well as patrons of the arts…past, present and future! The event happens on the first Thursday of each month from 5:30–8:30pm from March to October. Dozens of artists show and demonstrate their artistic process and all art is for sale. Participating artists are located inside various venues along with live acoustic music. Patrons are encouraged to “walk the art” through historic Downtown Joplin.

Rain Plan: If it is raining at 4:45pm, the proclamation ceremony will be held inside City Hall (602 S Main Street, Joplin, MO 64801).

For more information about NAHM, visit: www.americansforthearts.org/events/national-arts-and-humanities-month.

Empire District Electric asks for increase in fuel adjustment charge

(From the Missouri Public Service Commission)

The Empire District Electric Company (Empire) has filed a request with the Missouri Public Service Commission to adjust the fuel adjustment charge (FAC) on the bills of its electric customers.

Empire has made two filings. In its first filing (Case No. ER-2018-0086), Empire proposes to adjust the FAC to reflect fuel and purchased power costs for the six month period of March 2017 through August 2017. The second case is Empire’s true-up filing (Case No. EO-2018-0087). For a residential customer using 1,000 kWh (1,000 kilowatt-hours) of electricity a month, Empire states these two filings will result in the FAC increasing by approximately $0.16 a month. The proposed change would take effect in December.

Applications to intervene and participate in these cases must be filed no later than October 18, 2017, with the Secretary of the Missouri Public Service Commission, P.O. Box 360, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102-0360, or by using the Commission’s Electronic Filing and Information System (EFIS) atwww.psc.mo.gov .

Individual citizens wishing to comment should contact either the Office of the Public Counsel (Governor Office Building, 200 Madison Street, Suite 650, P.O. Box 2230, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102-2230, telephone (866) 922-2959, email opcservice@ded.mo.gov) or the Public Service Commission Staff (P.O. Box 360, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102, telephone 1-800-392-4211, email pscinfo@psc.mo.gov). The Office of the Public Counsel is a separate state agency that represents the general public in matters before the Commission.

The Empire District Electric Company serves approximately 151,700 electric customers in the Missouri counties of Barry, Barton, Cedar, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Greene, Hickory, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Polk, St. Clair, Stone and Taney.

Incident Spotlight

This morning at about 01:49 a.m. one of our officers was stopped at the red light at 7th and Main facing east. There was a Dodge Dually on the inside lane, next to him at the red light.

When the light turned green, the truck revved its engine and accelerated away eastbound. The officer was surprised by the driver's actions and thought that maybe the truck was already trying to get away from him. He captured him on radar pulling away at 54 mph in a 35 mph zone before 7th and Grand.

The officer caught up to the vehicle and observed it was failing to stay in its lane and driving erratically. The officer stopped the truck at 7th and High for the violations. The driver, a 62-year-old male from Neosho was arrested for DWI and had a BAC of more than twice the legal limit.

On September 25th 2017, the Ozarks drug enforcement team, Jasper County SWAT, and deputies from the Barton County Sheriff’s Office executed a narcotics related search warrant in the Kenoma, area.

As SWAT officers approached the property a male and female subject got into a flatbed truck and fled. While one group of officers secured the property that was getting ready to be searched, another group followed the truck, while a police helicopter followed the fleeing truck and observed it from the air.

The occupants of the truck drove at dangerously high speeds and at times operated the vehicle without its headlights on. The suspect traveled numerous county roads finally ending up in Golden City.

When the vehicle stopped, the two occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The helicopter observed the driver of the vehicle go to a residence. The helicopter was able to guide ground units to the home. The residence was occupied by one adult female, and to juvenile children. After a short standoff, a male subject was arrested after he exited out of a bathroom in the home.

The two minor children who were in the home were transported to a safe place due to the condition of the home and the presence of illegal substances in the home. The Department of Family Services were contacted and responded to the home and assisted in the investigation which is currently ongoing.

A short while later, the female subject which was in the vehicle, was located hiding behind a building a short distance away from the truck. The two subjects who were arrested are Ary D. Cliett, 32 and Chanstin Besendorfer, age 25 both of Lamar. At this time both suspects are being held at the Barton County Jail on a 24-hour hold for investigation awaiting filing of formal criminal charges by the Barton County prosecutor.

Best selling author to speak at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

The Honors Program will host a visit by theoretical physicist and bestselling novelist Alan Lightman at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium at Missouri Southern State University.

Lightman, the author of the international bestseller “Einstein’s Dreams,” will discuss living a life that incorporates science and the humanities.

“All writers have roots they draw from – travel, work, family,” says Lightman. “My roots are in science and it is fertile ground for fiction.”

As a theoretical physicist, he “has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of black holes, radiation processes at the centers of galaxies and the foundations of Einstein’s theory of gravity,” according to his official biography. He was educated at Princeton University and the California Institute of Technology. He has served on the faculties of Harvard University and MIT, and he was the first person to receive dual faculty appointments at MIT in science and the humanities.

“Einstein’s Dreams” – which is required reading for freshmen students in Missouri Southern’s Honors Program – has been translated into 30 languages. His novel “The Diagnosis” was a finalist for the National Book Award in fiction.

Following his presentation, Lightman will sign copies of his books. Admission is free and open to the public.

Domestic disturbance call leads to two arrests, man smearing marijuana-covered feces into Joplin Police car seat

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Incident Spotlight

Yesterday evening at 6:40 p.m. our officers responded to 20th and New Hampshire for a domestic disturbance.

A witness said a male and female were outside a vehicle arguing and the male threatened the female. When officers arrived, they saw the described vehicle speeding away. They stopped it at 22nd and Indiana to investigate. A 29-year-old male gave a false name, and a 32-year-old female was found to have a felony burglary warrant out of Camden County.

The female was arrested for her warrant. While trying to identify the male, he chose to take off running on foot. He was tased and taken into custody.

While he was being transported to jail, he retrieved a pill bottle containing marijuana that was hidden in his buttocks area. He defecated his pants, and dumped the marijuana into his feces and rubbed it into the back seat of the police car. He was found to have two felony warrants for burglary 2nd as well, and was also charged with obstruction, resisting and possession of marijuana.

Driver fleeing from Joplin Police shuts down traffic at 15th and Range Line, cited for DWI, multiple charges

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On September 25, 2017 at 8:43pm our officers were dispatched to 2517 South New Hampshire for a disturbance.

When the first officer arrived, she saw a male outside yelling at another male in a vehicle. The male in the vehicle was attempting to leave and the other male was yelling to the officer that the male driving was “drunk.” The male reversed towards the officer and almost struck her with the vehicle. The officer ordered the male to stop and he instead drove away. The officer radioed the vehicle was fleeing northbound and was possibly an intoxicated driver.

A sergeant who was driving up to the call saw the vehicle and attempted a stop. The vehicle refused to stop, while driving normal speeds, with no lights on and weaving side to side on the roadway.

The vehicle drove through a stop sign at 24th and Roland and then left the roadway and hit a mailbox and trash cans. The vehicle picked up speed, turned on its headlights, but continued to run stop signs. The vehicle regularly left the roadway and returned, further indicating the driver to be impaired. The vehicle also failed to stay on the right half of the road.

The vehicle went through 15th and Range Line eastbound, failing to stop for the red light. Other officers had shut down the traffic at the intersection, preventing any innocent motorists from getting hit. The vehicle hit a “dip” in the road while crossing Rangeline, causing the vehicle to go airborne and turn sideways. The vehicle struck a yellow metal/concrete stop sign post in the parking lot of Wal-Mart. The impact caused the vehicle to roll over onto its top and slide about 150 feet on its roof. Officers contacted the driver and sole occupant in the vehicle and placed him under arrest. The driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt so he was taken to the hospital, evaluated and released to our jail.

The vehicle that ran was a 1998 Honda Accord. The driver, David T. Ingle, 29, Joplin, was arrested for felony fleeing/resisting arrest, careless and imprudent driving, felony property damage, no insurance and felony Driving While Intoxicated. Those charges have been submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration.

Riverton man arrested for residential burglary near Columbus

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

A Riverton man is behind bars following a residential burglary northeast of Columbus over the weekend.

Just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, deputies were dispatched to a home, where neighbors, who were checking on the house while the residents were gone, discovered a man inside, allegedly attempting to steal property, including a handgun.

After being confronted, the suspect busted out a window and fled from the home.

Approximately an hour later, just after 2:30 a.m., Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies located the suspect, 23 year-old Tyler Garner, at his Riverton home.

Garner was arrested and transported to the Cherokee County Jail where he is being held in lieu of $10,000.00 bond on allegations of Burglary, Theft and Criminal Damage to Property.

“This is a great example of how crimes can be deterred or interrupted when neighbors watch out for one another,” stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

“Fortunately, nobody was injured during the commission of this crime, which involved the suspect having a handgun.”

“This investigation remains ongoing, and while we anticipate additional arrests to be made, I’m appreciative of the quick actions by the deputies to locate and apprehend Garner before anyone got hurt,” concluded Sheriff Groves.
