Although the weather may not encourage summer swimming, now’s the time to think about it to take advantage of a special promotion. Pool Pass Memberships are now on sale for 10% off until January 31. Pool passes can be used at any of the three Joplin pool locations, Schifferdecker Waterpark, and Ewert and Cunningham Family Aquatic Centers throughout the 2015 summer.

Regular rates include a family of 4 for $125, additional family members $15. Individuals 18 and over pay $70, and individuals 17 and under and seniors 55 and older, pay $60. Children 2 and under are free. This promotion is good throughout January, with the regular rates returning on February 1.

Pool passes are available for purchase at the Joplin Athletic Complex, located at 3301 W. 1st Street, Joplin. They are open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

For more information about Joplin’s pool facilities, call the Joplin Athletic Complex at 417-625-4750.

Joplin Police Department tops in DWI arrests

(From the Joplin Police Department)

The Joplin Police Department has two full-time DWI Enforcement Officers. These officers are fifty-percent grant-funded by the Missouri Department of Transportation.(MoDOT)

During 2014-grant year, the Joplin Police Department-DWI Unit made 374 DWI arrests. This is the most arrests made by any of ten MoDOT funded teams.

The ten MoDOT funded teams include; Joplin Police Department, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Columbia PD, Creve Coeur PD, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Platte County Sheriff’s Office, and St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

During the 2014 grant year the Joplin Police Department-DWI Unit made 1,457 car stops. The unit also hosted five local sobriety checkpoints, and participated in twelve multi-jurisdictional sobriety checkpoints. The assistance of the local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was
instrumental in the success of those checkpoints.

Driving while intoxicated is extremely dangerous and continues to be a serious problem in Missouri. In 2012 there were two hundred and fourteen alcohol-related traffic deaths and 3,510 alcohol related traffic injuries in Missouri. The penalties for driving while intoxicated can be jail time, thousands of dollars in legal fees, higher insurance premiums, and can cause your driver’s license to be suspended or revoked.

The Joplin Police Department will continue to make everyone’s lives safer by professionally and proactively enforcing DWI laws.

Tasered suspect, missing cattle among Barton County Sheriff's cases

(From the Barton County Sheriff's Department)

On 01-06-2015 The Barton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a burglary at a residence in the County. Deputy Luce responded to the 333 SE 10th road and spoke to the property owner. It appeared as if the door had been kicked in and it was not clear if anybody was still in the home or not. Deputy Luce searched the home and area around the home for anybody and nobody was found in or around the scene of the crime. The investigation is ongoing.

On 01-06-2015 a Deputy observed Aaron L. Leivan, age 38, of Lamar at a home in Iantha. The deputy knew Leivan to have outstanding warrants for his arrest. Deputy Joey Bronson and Deputy Bradley Keithly respond to the area and approached the house from two different directions. When they arrived at the residence they observed Leivan flee from the residence on foot. A foot chase started and deputy Keithly chased Leivan to the Baptist Church in Iantha. Where he was able to get Leivan to the ground. Deputy Keithly was in the process of trying to get Leivan into handcuffs, however Leivan continued to resist and try to get away. Deputy Bronson arrived on scene and few short moments later and used a x26 taser to gain compliance from Leivan and he was handcuffed. Leivan was transported back to the Sheriff’s Office on a felony probation and parole warrant and reports will be sent to the prosecuting attorney for consideration of filing felony charges for resisting arrest.
