Project Stay features on this week's Newsmakers program

(From KGCS)

Thirty-three percent of Missouri Southern State University students are first generation college students. Eleven percent of MSSU students are low-income which is defined as family income below 150% of the federal poverty level. And five percent of MSSU students have a documented disability with Disability Services.

Any one of these factors can put a student at risk for not succeeding in college. And that is why Project Stay was created. How this program works to help students is the focus of this week’s Newsmakers.

Project Stay Academic Advisor and Career Coordinator Emily Brower and Project Stay Tutoring Coordinator Jared Carper share details of workshops to help students with typical challenges facing students in higher education. In a video package, we follow two students doing volunteer work with the program who explain how Project Stay helped them with scheduling, supplies and other supports. Another student joins us on set to tell how the program has supported him.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of March 3 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.

Columbus man sentenced to nine years for battery, assault on law enforcement officer

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

A Columbus man was sentenced to nearly nine years imprisonment earlier today in Cherokee County District Court.

Steven D. Tyner, age 50, received his 107 month sentence after pleading guilty to Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.

Tyner's sentence comes after pleading guilty in two different criminal cases in Cherokee County.

In December 2022, Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Tyner at a remote cabin east of Crestline after a woman had been stabbed at that same location. Tyner remained in the Cherokee County Jail until posting bond in March 2023.

In May of 2023, an arrest warrant was issued for Tyner after violating the terms of his bond conditions.

On May 16, 2023, Cherokee County Investigators obtained information about Tyner's whereabouts in Joplin, Missouri.

Through a coordinated effort, Missouri law enforcement located and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Tyner, who then fled, leading authorities on a pursuit into Kansas.

Once in Kansas, Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies performed a controlled tactical vehicle intervention, causing Tyner's vehicle to spin out, at which point he was apprehended again.

Tyner is being held in the Cherokee County Jail and has one additional upcoming sentencing scheduled for April 2024 on allegations of violating the Kansas Offender Registration Act.

Tyner is required to register as a violent offender under the Kansas Offender Registration Act after having been found guilty by a Cherokee County Jury in May, 2007 for Attempted Voluntary Manslaughter.

Tyner was prosecuted by the Office of Cherokee County Attorney Kurt Benecke.

Cherokee County Sheriff warns of tax scams

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

This time of year, many of us are working on getting our income taxes filed, which can conjure up thoughts of the IRS. Despite only 1% of those who earn less than $200,000.00 being audited each year, 25% have a fear of an audit. Thieves capitalize on that fear and devise schemes to steal your money.

There are various scams thieves will try. One involves calling a potential victim, claiming to be an IRS Agent and saying if payment isn't made immediately over the phone, the Sheriff will come with a warrant and arrest them. Simply put, that's not going to happen.

It's important to know that if the IRS does have questions about your tax returns, they will first notify you by sending a letter through the US Postal Service. They will not call, will not email and will not text you. Any messages received by those means by someone claiming to be a government official, is most certainly a scam.

To help make sure you haven't become the victim of a financial scam it's good to check your credit history. You can do this annually for free by going to annualcreditreport.com or by calling 877-322-8228. Once you obtain the report you can verify there are no fraudulent credit cards or other accounts opened under your name and identity.

Finally, remember these thieves are good at what they do. If you become a financial crime victim, do not be embarrassed, contact law enforcement so we can help mitigate any further loss.
