Lamar Police Department warns of scam

(From the Lamar Police Department)

We continue to get calls about scam calls involving many different schemes. A call we received today was supposedly from Amazon security, telling this person their account had been compromised and was asking them to go to their computer.

If the caller had not become suspicious of this call, they could have unknowingly given the caller a lot of personal information which could have cost them dearly.

If you happen to receive one of these calls, you can call Amazon's actual phone number 888-280-4331. Another way to ensure that you're reaching the real Amazon is to visit the retail giant's "Contact Us" page.

For any scam calls, remember:

-Never give an unknown caller any personal or financial information.
-If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Tell them not to call again and hang up.

-Block them if you can—smartphones will often let you block a caller.

Dead body stuffed into suitcase, dumped along Highway 59

(From the McDonald County Sheriff's Office)

On July 29, the McDonald County Sheriff's Office was called to highway 59 between Noel and Ginger Blue for a possible body found on a steep hillside along the roadway. The body was found by a local man that was bicycling through the area.

An autopsy has been set for today and it is being treated as a homicide at this time.

An identification has not been made at this time due to the amount of time the body has been out in the elements.

More details will be released as the investigation moves forward.

If anyone has information about this case, please contact the McDonald County Sheriff's Office thru our dispatch center 417-223-4318 and ask for an investigator.

“Our creative community has so much to offer. So much, in fact, that it’s nearly impossible to take advantage of all the available opportunities. C2C is passionate about increasing audience for Joplin’s arts and cultural community by making these opportunities more accessible to both residents and visitors. We hope this arts roundtable educates the public about upcoming events, encourages collaboration between participating organizations, and informs the media about potential stories.”

In the past, C2C has created audio recordings of each presentation and placed them on C2C’s website. This year, C2C will be creating video recordings of each presentation.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Spiva exhibit to focus on contemporary Australian Aboriginal art

(From Southern News Service)

“Memory/ Place: Reflections on Contemporary Australian Aboriginal Art” a special exhibition of mixed media objects, will open Wednesday, Aug. 7, and run through Friday, Aug. 23, in Wednesday, August 7th, through Friday, August 23rd, in the Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.

In March of 2019, the MSSU International Art Seminar class traveled to Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, to study contemporary Australian Aboriginal art. This exhibit features artwork created in response to their discoveries.

Contemporary Aboriginal Australians are advancing the oldest continuous artist tradition in the world. Much of their artwork (historic and contemporary) is about organizing and sharing collective memories marking and reflecting on important sites, and bearing witness to the struggles during and following British colonization.

The artists featured in the exhibit – Pheobe Burke, Rachael Gopalakrishnan, Travey Graves, Lydia Humphreys, Kyle McKenzie, Jamie Robinson, and Grace Sitton – have reflected on these traditions in various ways. The exhibition is centered around an approach inspired by much of the indigenous artwork in collections in Sydney and Melbourne, using art for organizing memories and reflecting on places.

An opening reception will be offered from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, in the gallery. Admission is free and open to the public. Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Starting Monday, Aug. 12, the gallery will be open Monday through Friday.

Monday, July 29, 2019

Joplin man faces felony meth trafficking, weapons charges, Carterville woman charged with possession following two-county pursuit

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On Wednesday July 24th, 2019 at approximately 6 P.M. an off-duty Joplin Police Department investigator while eating at a restaurant observed what he believed to be criminal activity taking place at 4101 Richard Joseph Blvd.

The off-duty detective contacted duty patrol units and investigators working. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle that was involved in the suspicious activity for a traffic violation. The vehicle fled from officers and was not pursued.

Officers with the Duquesne Police Department located the vehicle and engaged in a pursuit with the vehicle. The driver at this time was identified as James G. Wilson, 29 of Joplin, MO.

Wilson was wanted for parole violations for burglary, vehicle tampering, forgery, and felony resisting arrest. JPD units joined the pursuit at this time. The pursuit continued through Jasper and Newton Counties. During the pursuit items were being thrown from the vehicle.

A Jasper County Deputy Sheriff was able to deploy a tire deflation device near Newton Rd and 110 Rd. The suspect vehicle came to a stop shortly after. James G. Wilson was taken into custody without further incident.

The items thrown from the vehicle were recovered. Wilson was charged with Unlawful possession of a firearm by certain persons, distribution of a controlled substance, felony resisting arrest and driving while revoked. Approximately 72 grams of methamphetamine were recovered along with a pistol. Charges were forwarded to the Jasper County Prosecutors Office.

A female passenger identified as Tammy Woods 37 of Carterville, MO was also taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance. Charges have been forwarded to the Jasper County Prosecutors Office. A third female passenger was released from the scene with no charges.

We would like to thank the Duquesne Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Newton County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in this case. The off-duty detective who recognized this criminal activity is a reminder that our officers are always on alert and ready to make our community safer.

Carthage taxi drivers given okay to boot passengers with body odor

Carthage City Council's Public Safety Committee approved an addition to the Rules of Conduct for the city's public transportation that will allow drivers to reject a passenger "if his or her body odor or personal hygiene will disturb the reasonable comfort of other passengers or transit operators."

The change was requested by Police Chief Greg Dagnan during the committee's July 15 meeting.

The passenger will be given the "opportunity to correct the odor or personal hygiene problem prior to discontinuing riding privileges, unless in the judgment of taxi driver that person places existing passengers in extreme discomfort or is considered a health risk to others."

Anyone not allowed to ride will have 10 days to appeal the decision.

The committee also opted to deny service to people who are known to have "infectious diseases and/or parasites. The service can be restored when Carthage City Taxi receives word from a doctor that the disease is no longer infectious.

The City of Carthage will be spraying the City (according to the trash pickup day) for mosquitoes July 29th through August 2nd weather permitting.

Your area will be sprayed in the evening of the day your trash is picked up, between the hours of 8 pm and midnight. You might want to turn off your attic or window fans when the sprayer is in your immediate area.

Although it's not harmful to humans or animals we try to avoid spraying around people walking or jogging. In the event of rain on your day for spraying it will be done sometime during the next work week.
