Ozark Christian College student killed in Kentucky accident

(The following was posted Friday on the Ozark Christian College website.)

Dear Ozark Family,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you that one of our students, Jace Smothers, was killed Friday in an accident near Paducah, Kentucky.

Jace was serving on staff with Christ In Youth this summer, and the CIY van in which he was riding was rear ended by an 18-wheeler.

Another Ozark student, Brandon Musselman, escaped with minor injuries. The three other CIY interns in the van—Katie Danhour, Andie Montgomery, and Tyler Conway—are also in stable condition.

Many of you had the privilege of knowing Jace—as a student, classmate, Strong Hall brother, or friend—and you will remember his big smile, loud laugh, and huge heart for Jesus and teenagers. He was a youth ministry major and a local Young Life volunteer.

Jace had just finished his freshman year at Ozark and loved his experience here. In a recent Instagram post, he wrote, “Study tip: Laminate your notes so the tears roll off. My first year of college was a dream! If I'm being honest...I was doubtful about God placing me at Ozark. But after classes started and I met these people...the entire game changed. God met me in a new way.” We are grateful to have known Jace, but we grieve deeply his absence.

I’m sure more details about the accident will be forthcoming in the days ahead, but in the meantime, I want to be sure that you, as the OCC family, know these three things:

First, you are not alone. I know that many of you who knew Jace personally will feel his loss deeply, and we want to encourage you to talk about your grief with a trusted counselor. God’s Word wisely calls us to “bear one another’s burdens,” and wherever you are this summer, we don’t want you to bear the burden of grief alone. We here at OCC are praying for you and are available, and we encourage you to seek out someone with whom you can talk and pray.

Second, your prayers are needed. I have spoken with Jace’s parents already, expressing on behalf of the OCC family our sorrow and love. I assured them that hundreds of Ozark folks would be lifting them up. Please pray for Jace’s parents Terry and Sharon Smothers and the entire family. Of course, there are many others grieving: Jace’s home church in Norton, Kansas, Jace’s roommate Sam Kiefer and his dorm brothers in Strong, his CIY teammates, and the young people he served at Young Life.

Please pray for the other CIY interns in the accident—Brandon, Katie, Andie, and Tyler—as their minds and hearts will need healing along with their bodies in the weeks ahead. And do not forget to lift up the truck driver on this tragic evening. Psalm 34:18 promises that “the Lord is near to the brokenhearted,” so ask God to make his presence known to all these folks as they walk through the valley of the shadow of death.

Third, while we grieve, we do not grieve as those who have no hope (1 Thess 4:13). It is certainly right and healthy for us to grieve. Death is not our friend, and there is no shame or lack of faith in tears of sorrow at times like this. Even Jesus wept at the grave of his friend Lazarus. But the powerful promise of the gospel is this: we have in Jesus Christ the firm and wondrous hope of heaven. A day is coming when we shall see our brother Jace in a place where there is no more death or mourning or crying or pain, a place where God makes all things new. That is the hope we hold on to and the gospel we are preparing men and women to proclaim.

As we learn details about memorial services for Jace, we will be sure to communicate those to the Ozark family, and when the 2019 fall semester begins, we will have a time of remembrance together in chapel. Until then, may “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our troubles” give you his grace today (2 Cor 1:3-4).

Joplin Humane Society to have cat lounge and adoption center at Northpark Mall in July

(From the Joplin Humane Society)

Joplin’s first and only cat-themed lounge and adoption center, is officially out of the bag.

The Joplin Humane Society (JHS) is bringing the altruistic concept to a pop-up store in the North Park Mall in Joplin, MO. This store is named “Tiny Tigers Lounge & Adoption Center and will be offering patrons a purrfect place to enjoy relaxing with adorably adoptable cats and kittens.

The pop-up lounge, will be open Friday – Sunday throughout the month of July.

The Joplin Humane Society plans to accomplish its mission of finding furrever homes for adoptable cats and kittens by offering community cat lovers a place to meet these sweet felines outside of the shelter environment and also offer a relaxing place where the cats will receive regular human interaction, which will result in raising their chances of adoption.

Upon entering, a variety of seating options allows guests to lounge comfortably on furry rugs, comfy sofa’s and benches or pillowed nooks, where you can chat with friends, enjoy quiet time with some very special kitties or bring your laptop and use the free Wi-Fi, while enjoying a free cup of coffee or bottle of ice cold H2O.

For your viewing pleasure and interaction, there will be cat trees, kitty shelves and lots of places for kitty shenanigans. You will enjoy them strutting along the overhead shelves, climbing the wall ledges scattered around the perimeter, lounging in the storefront windows or sleeping in their super comfy cat hammocks.

The lounge will accommodate 25 - 30 cats at a time, and for a small fee of only $5.00, guests can play and interact with the cats for a half hour.

With kitten season upon us, the Joplin Humane Society has experienced a HUGE influx of cats and kittens. We are hoping you will find your perfect feline family member at the lounge. We will be offering adoptions on-site, which will enable you to take your kitty home that day.

Please come by the lounge, located in the old Gymboree store (close to the Dunham mall entrance). We are expecting lots of kitty lovers to head our way, so reservations can be made in front of the store starting July 5th at 11:30 am. Jacob Wright's success stopping drunk drivers earns him JPD Officer of the Month honor

(From the Joplin Police Department)

OFFICER OF THE MONTH

April 2019

Officer Jacob Wright

Officer Wright is awarded April 2019 Officer of the Month:

The Joplin Police Department actively seeks out intoxicated drivers and has a history of success in these endeavors.

As part of his general patrol duties, Officer Jacob Wright has made it a personal goal to become more proficient in his DWI investigations and was very proactive in these efforts during the month. He has also volunteered to conduct DWI investigations for other officers on the team who may encounter impaired drivers.

On April 28th, 2019 a suspect fled from Corporal Bowin after he attempted to stop him for traffic violations. The suspect fled in the vehicle and on foot and hid in the attic of 302 S. Connor Ave., and was apprehended after falling through the ceiling.

Officer Wright was requested to assist with a DWI investigation and responded to the jail where he conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. The suspect admitted he was drunk and refused to submit to any testing. During further questioning by Officer Wright, the suspect admitted he had been drinking Vodka since 8:00am and also recently “IV’ed $20 of Meth”. The suspect was charged with numerous crimes, including DWI.

On April 21st, 2019 dispatch sent out a “Check Own Satisfaction” call of a white Chevrolet truck that was driving erratically and also had the driver’s door open. Officer Wright searched the area and located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near north Main Street and Murphy Blvd. Officer Wright contacted the driver and immediately noticed a strong odor of intoxicants (alcohol) and observed several empty alcohol containers in the truck. Officer Wright detected several clues during the SFST portion of his investigation and arrested the suspect for DWI. At the jail she admitted to drinking alcohol and smoking Marijuana recently.

On April 16th, 2019 Officer Wright responded to a single vehicle crash near the intersection of D and Main Street. An eastbound vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at Main Street, almost collided with a vehicle traveling northbound, and went off the roadway on the east side of Main Street. While speaking with the driver, Officer Wright believed that the driver was possibly under the influence. He conducted a DWI investigation and arrested the driver after seeing numerous clues of impairment. At the jail, the driver admitted to taking sleeping medications prior to attempting to drive to a nearby convenience store.

On April 15th, 2019 Officer Wright stopped a vehicle leaving a disturbance at 209 S. McKee. During his contact with the driver, he believed she was possibly under the influence of alcohol. Officer Wright administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which showed several clues of impairment. The driver was arrested for DWI and at the jail she admitted to consuming several shots of alcohol and also smoked Marijuana recently.

On April 9th, 2019 Officer Sandbothe stopped a vehicle near 6th and Moffet for traffic violations. After contacting the driver, Officer Sandbothe believed she was possibly under the influence of narcotics. Officer Wright responded and administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, after which he developed probable cause to believe she was operating the vehicle in an intoxicated condition. She was arrested for DWI and taken to the city jail. After further questioning, she admitted to smoking Marijuana recently.

Officer Wright’s DWI enforcement skills have developed tremendously and he leads the Evening Shift patrol team in DWI arrests. Officer Wright is a hard worker and has even expressed how he practices field sobriety tests on his time outside of work. I commend him for his efforts and know that these are great examples of how he has taken the extra step beyond his general patrol duties to get impaired drivers off of the streets of Joplin. You are an asset to the community, agency, and citizens. Thank you Officer Wright.

Respectfully,
Matthew Stewart
Chief of Police

Two injured in shootout at Stella home involving custody dispute, felony charges to be filed against child's father

(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a shooting that occurred on Sunday 06/23/2019 in the Stella area.

At approximately 4:30PM, Deputies responded to 19898 Terrier Road in Stella. The investigation is still underway but at this time it appears that a 27-year-old male went to that location demanding to get a small child that he is the father of.

Apparently there are unresolved custody issues over the child. The situation escalated with the 27-year-old making threats.

Gunshots were exchanged between the 27-year-old and Joshua Roller, a 34-year-old male that lives at this address.

Joshua Roller received wounds from a handgun to his lower extremities. He was transported to Freeman Hospital. The 27-year=old suffered wounds from a shotgun in his upper torso. He was transported to Mercy Hospital.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office will be requesting charges from the Prosecutors Office against the 27-year-old for 1st degree assault, armed criminal action and child endangerment.

The investigation continues at this time.

-Sheriff Chris Jennings
