Crowder instructor receives Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching

(From Crowder College)

Crowder College faculty member, Suzanne Puckett, was awarded the 2015 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Crowder Holiday buffet, Dec. 10, 2015. The recipient of this award is determined by a vote of faculty members.

Puckett has been with the college since May of 2000. She began as an Upward Bound Programs Bridge Specialist before she started teaching communications in 2003. Today, she is a communications instructor, Honors Program Coordinator, and one of Crowder’s PTK faculty advisors.

Student evaluation comments of Puckett talk about her “positive energy and how she will do what she can to help students prepare for the real world”. One student summed it up by saying, “She is one of the few teachers I have had that taught me something step by step. I like that she believes in her students and makes it obvious.” Faculty members commented that Puckett challenges others to stretch their intellect.

Puckett holds a Master of Science in English Education from Missouri State University. She resides in Neosho with her husband, Stuart, and children, Sam and Stuart Edward.

Every spring in Jefferson City, the Missouri Community College Association honors outstanding community college educators with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award is presented to an exemplary teacher from each college.

Joplin Police offer tips to fight theft of Christmas packages

(From the Joplin Police Department)

It is the holiday season and usually we see an increase in the theft of packages delivered to homes.

Usually the packages are stolen from porches after being delivered. There is some evidence perpetrators follow the trucks when they enter a neighborhood and then steal the packages once delivered. There are several things you can do that will prevent these thefts:

-If you see a person(s) following delivery trucks when they enter a neighborhood. Please call the Joplin Police Department immediately. (417-623-3131)  If possible, consider having packages, especially those of considerable value, delivered to an alternate location such as your work location.

-Consider requiring that packages, especially those of considerable value, be signed for by someone at your home. This may prevent them from being left on your porch and stolen.

If a package delivered to you is stolen, please call 417-623- 3131 and report its theft to the Joplin Police Department along with the company or agency that performed the delivery and the company from which you bought the product.

AT&T gives $5,000 to Crowder Technical Education and Career Day

(From Crowder College)

AT&T today announced a $5,000 contribution to support Crowder College’s Technical Education and Career Day event, which helps inform area students about the skill sets that they need to be successful in a variety of careers. AT&T’s contribution will help support the school’s Technical Education and Career Day for Carl Junction, College Heights, Jasper, McAuley and Webb City area students.

“Equipping students with the resources and skills that they need to achieve college, career and life success is critical,” said Dr. Jennifer Methvin, president, Crowder College. “We are grateful for AT&T’s support and for its longstanding commitment to education and to Missouri.”

As part of Crowder College’s career education program, approximately 500 9th and 10th-grade area students from Carl Junction, College Heights, Jasper, McAuley and Webb City will get the opportunity to hear directly from instructors and other professional experts from a variety of career paths and learn about job placement and industry demand in those fields.

“Providing a quality education is one of the most important gifts that we can give our kids. It is also the cornerstone of strong communities,” said Rep. Charlie Davis, R-Webb City. “I want to thank AT&T for its commitment to education and to our community. AT&T’s support for Crowder College’s career education program demonstrates the importance of investing in students today to prepare them for success tomorrow.”

“We are proud to support Crowder College because we believe that investing in education and helping fund programs that put kids on a path to success benefits students, our business and the broader economy,” said John Sondag, president, AT&T Missouri.

AT&T’s support for Crowder College Foundation is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to education. Among the most significant corporate educational initiatives in the U.S., AT&T and its Aspire initiative have already impacted more than 1 million students across all 50 states since the program launched in 2008. Through AT&T Aspire, the company has committed to investing $350 million to education.

Two men arrested in connection with attempt to con elderly Joplin man

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On 12-11-15 at 1:14 PM, the Joplin Police Department responded to 419 E. 33rd St. in reference to a possible fraud involving an elderly victim.

Upon arrival at 419 E. 33rd St., officers observed that the front driveway of the residence had a fine dust on it with no actual refinishing to have taken place. It appeared that someone had just sprinkled concrete dust all over the driveway.

The victim advised that on December 3, 2015, a male, later identified as Josh T. Harrison, 41, Carthage, Mo., had received payment of $270.00 dollars for presumed work on the driveway.

On 12-11-15, Harrison again came to the residence and advised he was there to work on the drive way and wanted additional moneys. Harrison was accompanied by William R. Lovell, 29, Liberty, Mo. Lovell together with Harrison had advised they would work on the victim’s drive way wanted $150.00 for the service.

Lovell was arrested for two Newton County warrants. (FTAs for Driving while suspended and Seatbelt). Neither Josh Harrison nor William Lovell had a business license to conduct business inside the city of Joplin.

Harrison and Lovell were taken into custody for no business license and property destruction due to the concrete dust they had spread over the driveway and carport. Harrison was transported to the jail where he was served with complaints for business license required and property destruction. Lovell was transported to the jail and served with complaints for business license required and property destruction.

Subsequent to this investigation, Harrison was charged with Prosecutor for Financial Exploitation of the Elderly, a class B felony, by the Newton County Prosecutor. Harrison has a $1,000 cash bond.

Both men remain in custody at the Joplin City Jail.

Nancy Hughes devotion: A constant reminder

Key Scripture:

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)

Devotion:

I was asked by an elementary principal to observe Grant, a new student at our school. The teacher had serious concerns that the boy might have some problems with staying focused in class and wanted me, as school nurse, to do an observation of his behavior for a few minutes in the classroom.

What I found was a student who slithered over, around and under his desk, chatted with himself and other students and looked over at me and winked “Hey Nurse Nancy. How’s your day going?” – as the instructor taught the math lesson. I was sure that he hadn’t heard a single instruction that she had given and watched as she wrote a math problem on the board and gave instructions.

“Please write this problem down in your math journal,” she told her students, “and I will give you five minutes to see if you can find the answer.”

“Eighteen,” we heard a voice instantly say. Shocked, the teacher and I both turned to look at Grant.

“What?” she said. Grant smiled. “The answer is eighteen.”

And he was right! Even though it didn’t appear that he was listening at all, he actually was!

Today’s verse in Proverbs speaks to so many of us with prodigal children. First, look at what the verse does NOT say. It does not say that if you raise your children to know the Lord, they will never turn from Him as they get older.

Nor does it say that children who have wandered will automatically turn back to the Lord as adults.
But what it DOES say is beautiful to our ears: teach your child about the Lord. Share the words of Jesus over and over and explain what love and trust, mercy and forgiveness, grace and hope mean. Then, if your child wanders down a wrong path as he gets older, God’s Word will return to him again and again.

He will be reminded in his heart of the love Jesus has for him no matter where he is or what he is doing. In other words, “he will not turn from it” because he has heard what you have taught.
Please don’t lose hope! What we have taught and shared about Jesus will not come back empty. Just like this little boy who appeared to have not heard a word about his math lesson, and yet did, so it will be for our prodigals. Thank you, Lord.

My Prayer for Today:

Father, thank you for your encouragement to train my children to know you. May your words stay with them always. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Reflection:

Have you ever felt almost hopeless because of a prodigal son or daughter who has turned from the Lord?

Application:

If you have small children, teach them wisdom from the Lord through songs, videos and books and especially from the Bible. Sing along or read along with them.

If you have older children, never miss an opportunity to give them a hug and pray over them before they leave for school or on a date. Leave Scripture love notes in their lunch boxes or backpacks or by text on their cell phones.

Power Verses:

Proverbs 22:6 (NIV) “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.”

Isaiah 55:11 (NIV) “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV) “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
