Webb City Police investigating dog poisoning

(From the Webb City Police Department)

On Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 3 p.m. officers with the Webb City Police Department received a report of a possible animal poisoning in the 800 block of West Fourth Street.

The owners of the dog left their dog secured in their yard when they left for work the morning of Tuesday, November 28th. When they returned later Tuesday evening their dog was lethargic and would not eat. They took their dog to an emergency veterinarian in Joplin where treatment was started for possible poisoning of an unknown substance.

The owners have since given the dog to the Joplin Humane Society for continued treatment. We are encouraging anyone with information in this case to contact Lieutenant Travis Osterman or Detective Sergeant Joe Beckett at 417 673-1911.

(From the Joplin Humane Society)

We are sorry for the graphic photo, but we think it’s important that pet owners be aware that there are monsters out there, walking among us.

Everyone please hug and love your pets tonight. We were horrified to learn that a resident of Webb City came home to find that their dog had apparently been poisoned and had glue put in his mouth. The dog is in critical condition, and although one of our staff members has offered to help cover an initial emergency evaluation, the owners think it is probably already too late.

We will update as soon as we know more about the dog’s condition.

David Phelps' Classic Christmas to be performed at Joplin High School Performing Arts Center

(From Connect2Culture)

Connect2Culture (C2C) will present David Phelps’ Classic Christmas on Sunday, December 17, 7:30pm (doors open at 6:30pm) at Joplin High School’s Performing Arts Center (2104 N Indiana Ave, Joplin, MO 64804). David Phelps’ performance will be the second installment in Connect2Culture’s inaugural performing arts series, Curtains Up.

David Phelps' "Classic Christmas" is the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season. His renditions of old hymns and modern holiday hits capture the true spirit of Christmas! "We are excited to bring David Phelps to Joplin for his Classic Christmas show. The Christmas spirit will absolutely come alive in everyone who attends!" – Clifford Wert, President and CFO, Connect2Culture.

Looking back on David Phelps’ legacy, so far, he has come a long way from Tomball, Texas. Over the greater part of the last two decades, David's artistry has grown to echo off the walls of Carnegie Hall, and vibrate the chandeliers in the White House and in countless halls and churches around the world. His masterful melodies have been burned into critically-acclaimed solo offerings, award-winning Gaither Vocal Band CDs and Gold and Platinum Gaither "Homecoming" collections. It has been a showcase far above the expectations of any ordinary artist. But for David, a perpetual work in progress, these happy years have been just an extended glimpse of the Creator's bigger picture. Pushing the boundaries is every artist's goal, and David's focus is beyond the ordinary, trusting in that Divine design.

Unique to his performance in Joplin, nearly 50 Joplin High School students will join David Phelps on stage for a total of four songs. “We are so pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to Joplin High School students. Singing with a professional artist is a great learning experience – one they will not soon forget! Parents have already told us their kids are very excited to sing with David.” – Emily Frankoski, Community Arts Director, Connect2Culture.

Ticket prices range from $20-$40 and can be purchased through connect2culture.com or by calling 1-800-514-3849. Groups of 15-40 receive a 20% discount. Two-show packages (David Phelps and Annie Moses Band) receive a 10% discount. Refreshments will be available for purchase in the Talon Room before the show and during intermission.

Joplin Police Department offers tips on driving through construction zones

(From the Joplin Police Department)

TIP TUESDAY!

Todays tip deals with construction zone speed.

We were asked this question:
Does the road construction reduced speed limit have to be obeyed 24 hours of everyday during the construction period? Or can drivers go back to obeying the normal speed limit for that area when construction is not being done (i.e. over night, weekends, and holidays)?

Answer: If a speed limit sign is posted by in a construction zone, then that's the speed limit, no matter the time of day or if work is taking place or not. However, when workers are present the fine doubles. If there are no construction workers in the zone then the fine would be normal. Most of the time in Joplin you don't see speed limit reduced signs in construction zones unless the limit is being redused to less than 20 Mph. That's because all work zones, posted or not, have a maximum speed limit of 20Mph.

So remember, next time you see that construction zone sign, the speed limit will be 20mph unless posted lower.

________________________________
Sec. 114-239. Construction zones established—Speed limit.
(a) For the purposes of this section the term "construction zone" shall mean any section of road way under city jurisdiction where construction or major maintenance operations are being effected.
(b) Any such "construction zone" shall be designated by posting a sign indicating the presence of construction or major maintenance work and the maximum speed limit within that section of roadway under construction or maintenance.
(c) All vehicles entering a "construction zone" shall proceed at a speed not to exceed 20 miles per hour until clearing the zone. However, the director of the public works department is hereby authorized and empowered to fix a lower speed if in his discretion he reasonably believes that a certain section of roadway due to its characteristics or the nature of the maintenance or construction work creates an increased danger to the public or to construction workers.

Similar provisions, RSMo 304.351.

Newton County Sheriff investigating shooting of Joplin man at Redings Mill

(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)

On 11/24/2017, shortly before 5 p.m., the Newton County Sheriff’s Office responded to Redings Mill in reference to someone shooting a gun in the area.

While there trying to locate where the shots were coming from a report came in that an individual had been shot. A 28-year-old identified as Ronald Hicks from Joplin reported that he had been shot in the upper leg while he was on a walking trail. Hicks was taken to Mercy Hospital where he was treated and released.

Deputies located three individuals who had been firing guns in close proximity to where the victim was shot. An investigation is under way at this time.

While there is nothing to indicate at this time that the victim was shot intentionally it is being treated as an assault due to the reckless nature of the incident.

Webb City Police Department holding 20th annual Shop with a Cop

(From the Webb City Police Department)

The Webb City Police Department is proud to share with you, that we are coordinating our 20th annual ‘Shop with a Cop’ event. Naturally, this entire event is made possible only because of the generosity of people in the community. Without the donations, this project would not exist. Local businesses in Webb City have partnered with us and are selling the ‘Shop with a Cop’ badges for $1.00 donations for this program. One hundred percent of the collected funds go directly to children and their families.

As you are well aware, this program helps to provide Christmas for some very deserving children in the Webb City school system.

This year’s event is scheduled for a Saturday morning in December when again, 75 law-enforcement officers will shop with 75 children at our Webb City Wal-Mart. Each child will be given $100.00 to spend on Christmas gifts, for themselves and other family members. The selected families will also receive a food basket of items donated by various businesses and vendors who also have partnered with us. The officers have almost as much fun as the kids, and every year Santa Claus arrives early to help us out and there are always lots of hugs and even some tears of gratitude.

Please note: we do not solicit donations by telephone or by door to door contact. If an individual is personally contacted by anyone representing themselves to be associated with the Webb City Police Department “Shop with a Cop’ program, they should decline making a donation and report the contact.

However, we do receive donations by mail or by drop off, at two convenient locations:
1. ‘Shop with a Cop’
c/o Webb City Police Department
211 West Broadway
Webb City, Missouri 64870

2. ‘Shop with a Cop’
c/o Dr. William Rice
1601 South Madison
Webb City, Missouri 64870

If you wish to write a check, please make it payable to – "Webb City Shop with a Cop" Do not write it to The Webb City Police Department.

“Shop with a Cop” greatly appreciates your support. Please know that your support is helping to make a difference in our community.
If you would like to provide media coverage of this event, please feel free to do so. We would also like to extend an invitation to you to join us the morning of the event.

Thank you for Caring,
Carl Francis

Domestic assault report leads to three arrests, removal of three-year-child from Joplin home

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Incident Spotlight

Yesterday at 1:05 p.m. our officers responded to an address in the southwest part of the city for a domestic assault. They met the female victim away from the residence and she reported that she was choked and assaulted by the suspect, who is her boyfriend.

Officer approached the house and saw the male suspect run into the house. It was determined that he and another male were hiding in the attic.

Officers were able to talk them down and arrested both. The first for domestic assault and warrants and the second male for warrants.

Due to poor living conditions in the home, drug use in the home and drug paraphernalia within reach of a three-year-old child, a female was arrested at the residence for endangering the welfare of a child. The child was taken into state protective custody.
