Jasper County Sheriff's Office reports numerous scams occurring

(From the Jasper County Sheriff's Office)

There are numerous scams going around. The "IRS" scam and the "you have a warrant" scam seem to be the big ones for right now. Even though we have put out numerous warnings we still have people getting taken advantage of.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up! NEVER give out personal information. If they have your information never confirm it for them.

DO NOT PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION, JUST END THE CALL.

We have said this several times already but we never call and ask for money. We will not call you to tell you have a warrant; we will come visit you in person.

Don't answer a number you don't recognize is the easiest way to avoid these calls.

PS- Just to let you know-
you did not win the publisher's clearing house grand prize, a new car, a trip, a new house, money, the prince of wherever's inheritance and Bill Gates is not wanting to send you money.

If it sounds to good to be true, that is because it is not true.

Don't be taken advantage of.

Spiva exhibit to feature artwork from Papua New Guinea

(From Southern News Service)

A special exhibition of artwork from Papua New Guinea will be displayed Tuesday, Sept. 3, through Friday, Sept. 27, at Missouri Southern State University’s Spiva Gallery.

“Oceania Journey” features works from Papua New Guinea, the second largest island in the world.

The island features diverse geographies and is so rugged that many villages are isolated from each other to the point that more than 700 languages are spoken across the island of about 11 million people. These language communities often have their own distinct cultural and artistic traditions.

The exhibit showcases artifacts reflecting regional styles and complements them by exploring the power of newer, national arts to inspire unity and progress rooted in local ways of living. It includes a selection of engaging ritual and everyday objects including bilum (string) bags, ceremonial bowls, figures and rattan masks.

A reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in the gallery. Prior to the reception, Dr. Jacquelyn Lewis-Harris will present “The Land of 700+ Cultures: The Art of Papua New Guinea.”

Lewis-Harris is the former director of the Connecting Human Origin and Cultural Diversity program and associate professor of anthropology and the College of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She has published numerous works on African American, Papua New Guinean and West African artists, and her presentation will contextualize the works on display.

The Spiva Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission to the gallery and the presentation are free and open to the public.

Funding support for the exhibit was provided by the Institute of International Studies, the Hyde Foundation, UMB, and the estate of Mildred Marshall. Object loan is courtesy of the Spurlock Museum, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Megan Carney receives $1,000 Phi Eta Sigma national scholarship

(From Southern News Service)

Megan Carney, president of the Phi Eta Sigma chapter at Missouri Southern, was recently selected to receive a scholarship from the honor society’s national office.

Carney, who recently began her third year in Missouri Southern’s Yours to Lose – Advance Medical School Acceptance Program, was selected as one of the recipients of the $1,000 undergraduate scholarship.

“They’re looking for student involvement and volunteer work within Phi Eta Sigma and outside as well,” said Carney. “They want you to be a community-minded person.”

Her volunteer efforts have included working with her fellow chapter members to clean rooms at the Ronald McDonald House of the Four States. She also recently completed a summer internship through AmeriCorps, working with children with developmental disabilities.

Carney, who served as chapter president for the 2018-19 school year, was recently elected again for the position for 2019-20.

“While she is organized and displays true leadership, it’s her passion for serving the community that makes Megan deserving of this scholarship,” said Teresa Thompson, director of First-Year Experience at Missouri Southern and advisor to the Phi Eta Sigma chapter. “When planning events for the club, community service projects are at the forefront.”

Founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois, Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students. The national organization awards approximately $300,000 in scholarships each year.

West Zora to be closed from Lone Elm Road to Schifferdecker

(From the City of Joplin)

Starting Monday, September 9, West Zora Avenue will be closed from Lone Elm Road to Schifferdecker Avenue, due to the work on the Turkey Creek bridge project.

This closure is planned for approximately three weeks as grading work is completed to bring Zora Avenue to the new roadway elevation.

This bridge replaces the former bridge that flooded during significant rainfall, causing the closure of Schifferdecker Avenue to through traffic.

During this construction closure, North Schifferdecker Avenue and Peace Church Road will remain open and drivers will be detoured from traveling east on Zora Avenue.

Northbound drivers will turn west at the end of Schifferdecker Avenue and travel north on Peace Church Road. Travelers from the north on Peace Church Road will be detoured to southbound Schifferdecker Ave. Signage for the closures will be in place to alert drivers.

This $2.45 million bridge project is a partnership between the City of Joplin, Jasper County and the Joplin Special Road District.

The Jasper County Commission will fund up to $1.4 million of project costs, including engineering fees and property acquisition, and $100,000 will be paid by the Jasper County Special Road District. The City will pay the remainder of the project through the 3/8-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax, renewed by voters in 2014.

Hartman & Company is the contractor for the project, with Allgeier Martin and Associates serving as the engineering consultant. The bridge is located on North Schifferdecker where it connects with West Zora Street. This new bridge construction is necessary to meet future traffic needs in the northern section of Joplin.

EMS Sim Lab, including two ambulance simulators, completed at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

The EMS Sim Lab on the third floor of the Julio S. León Health Sciences Building will receive some extra exposure next week.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Tuesday, September 3, at 10:30 a.m.

It’s to celebrate the completion of a project that entails two ambulance simulators, as well as interactive technology, inside Room 312.

“This is an exciting opportunity and advancement for the EMS program here at MSSU,” said Ted Lee, associate professor of emergency medical services. “A lab that is as fully immersive and realistic as possible in a classroom setting will bring a totally new educational environment to EMS education.”

Students, as well as outside agencies and first responders, began using the lab during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Some of technology includes:

Two ambulance simulators in a single classroom

Two 50” television monitors with Apple TV for video camera and ECG simulation monitor viewing

Video cameras capable for viewing in other classrooms and conference rooms for instructor rater reliability exercises

Two 65” television monitors with computers for viewing of EMS specific software, demonstration videos, power point presentations and student polling

Lab tables and demonstration areas for skills and scenarios

“This has been a true collaboration on the part of MSSU and would not have been possible without the hard work and faith in our program from the leadership of the college, Academic Affairs that helped secure the grant funding, the Dean of Health Science, faculty and staff from the EMS department and the Dean’s office, faculty and staff from other health science programs, as well as the IT and Physical Plant departments,” Lee added.
