Riverton man sentenced to eight years for meth possession, assaulting a K9, burglary

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

A sentencing hearing in Cherokee County District Court on Thursday resulted in a prison term being handed down for Adam C. Evans.

Evans, age 37, of Riverton, was sentenced to 104 months imprisonment.

"The roughly eight and a half year prison sentence stems from numerous cases investigated by Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies, going back to 2018," according to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

"Evans pled guilty to the August 2018 Burglary of a rural Cherokee County home where numerous firearms were stolen, a spring 2021 case where he barricaded himself in a local business when deputies attempted to arrest him on an outstanding warrant and he was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, and an August 2021 incident where Evans fled into a wooded area, striking a Law Enforcement K9 with a branch when Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies again attempted to arrest him on additional outstanding warrants for his arrest," according to Sheriff Groves.

The formal charges Evans pled to are: Inflicting Harm to a Law Enforcement K9, Burglary, Possessing Methamphetamine and Interference with Law Enforcement.

Evans has been held in the Cherokee County Jail since his arrest in August 2021.

The cases were prosecuted by the Cherokee County Attorney's Office.

Third generation takes over leadership at Webb City funeral home, expansion planned

(From Simpson Funeral Home)

Simpson Funeral Home has entered its third generation of ownership. Austin Simpson, along with his wife Amanda, have taken leadership of the company from Austin’s parents, Hal and Stefanie Simpson, with a sale finalized in August, 2022.

Austin confirmed his commitment to continue the legacy instilled by his late grandfather, Jack C Simpson, “..our legacy in serving families in the midst of grief and loss will continue under the strong footings set generations before me. We will strive to dignify lives well-lived by our friends and neighbors. As one of the longest-standing family owned and operated firms in our area, our company will be industry leaders in quality and compassion for all.”

The company maintains two locations in Webb City and Carl Junction, each fully staffed and able to handle a wide variety of needs, from cremation, to burial, and pre-arranged funerals.

Recent plans are underway for the expansion and modernization of Simpson Funeral Home. “We are the first funeral home in the area to offer fully-online planned cremation and burial plans,” Austin says.

“We believe this feature provides a significant benefit to our community, now able to plan for their final expenses in the comfort of their own home, with their family members.” Other plans for modernization include the renovation of both facilities, and the expansion of overall services the company offers. From cremation, to burial, and everything in between, Simpson Funeral Home will continue to provide exceptional customer service and affordable solutions.

State Historical Society executive director to speak at Missouri Southern

(From Missouri Southern State University

Dr. Gary Kremer, executive director of the State Historical Society of Missouri, will offer a lecture tied to his latest book at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.

This Place of Promise: A Historian’s Perspective on 200 Years of Missouri History was published in November 2021. Tied to the bicentennial celebration of Missouri’s statehood, the book includes personal perspectives from a native son as well as what it means to be a Missourian.

Presented by the Social Science Department, Kremer’s appearance at Missouri Southern was coordinated by Dr. Virginia Laas, a retired professor of history at the university who is currently wrapping up her three-year term as president of the historical society’s board of trustees.

“My term ends at the end of October,” said Laas. “We have never had Gary come to Missouri Southern to give a talk, and I was delighted that he agreed to come when I asked.

“He’ll talk about Missouri’s history, what it means to him and what he sees as the future for the state.”

Kremer is a fifth-generation Missourian who has written, coauthored and coedited a dozen books. He previously taught history at Lincoln University in Jefferson City and later at William Woods, and served as state archivist from 1987-91. He became executive director of the State Historical Society of Missouri in 2004.

“When Gary took over, we were located in the basement of the library at the University of Missouri in Columbia,” she said. “Today, we have a modern, three-story building across the street from Peace Park. The building itself epitomizes what he’s done for our organization. He oversaw the expansion of our programming and our outreach across the state. Under his management, the historical society gained a much greater presence in the state of Missouri.”

Kremer also led statewide efforts last year to commemorate the bicentennial through a variety of events.

“Dr. Kremer is a tremendous asset to our state and a valued colleague in our history community,” said Brad Belk, Missouri Southern’s community historian. “Gary did such a phenomenal job with Missouri’s 200-year celebration and was a compelling figure in the film (“Missouri! A Bicentennial Celebration”) that chronicled Missouri’s two centuries.”

Admission to his presentation at Missouri Southern is free and open to the public.

First graduates reported for new Jasper County Jail Treatment Program

(From the Jasper County Sheriff's Office)

On September 30th, 2022 at 4:00 PM, the Jasper County Jail Treatment Program (JCJTP) will be graduating its first three participants. The program is an is an intensive 120-day treatment program involving inmates that have either volunteered to attend or have been referred to the program as a result of a court sanction or probation violation.

Once admitted to the program, the participants meet with a therapist and complete a comprehensive intake assessment to identify mental and behavioral health challenges.

While in the program, participants will be held to higher standards for keeping the treatment dorms clean and orderly. They have a daily checklist of chores they are required to complete as part of the treatment activities.

The participants will work with a therapist throughout the program to address challenges and learn how to cope with them in a healthier, more socially appropriate manner. When the participants complete the treatment program, they will be referred to outpatient treatment programs for continued support.

Each graduate will have received an average of 425+ hours of treatment during their treatment engagement with the JCJTP. Graduates have been engaged in treatment for at least five days a week while following a structured routine. The treatment program consists of:

Individual Counseling: to address contributing factors to engaging in substance use and antisocial behavior.

Group Counseling: to address as a group those contributing factors and to provide feedback and support for one another.

Group Education: to learn about the cause and effects of their behaviors and to learn coping skills to reduce/prevent future reoccurrences.

Life Skills and Parenting Educational Groups

Work Assignments: these work details will be separate from the trustees in the detention center.

Community Support Groups: to get established with the various support groups available in the community to assist with the transition following their graduation and release from the Jasper County Detention Center.

Discharge Planning: to help to identify needs necessary to improve their life outside of and at the conclusion of their incarceration.
