MODOT schedules virtual meeting on project to replace Route 96/White Oak Creek bridge

(From MODOT)

The public is invited to a virtual (online) public meeting starting Monday, February 7, to learn more about a project to replace the Missouri Route 96/White Oak Creek bridge, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

This bridge is included in Gov. Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state.

The meeting will be available for two weeks beginning Monday, February 7, until Monday, February 21, and can be accessed at www.modot.org/missouri-route-96-white-oak-creek-bridge-replacement.

The public is invited to make comments and/or ask questions about the plan to replace the bridge east of Avilla. The new bridge will be two feet higher, 16 feet wider and 15 feet shorter than the existing bridge.

The current bridge was built in 1925 with extensive rehabilitation in 1955 and carries approximately 3,800 vehicles per day (22 percent is truck traffic). The project is scheduled to be awarded to a contractor in April.

The estimated cost of the project is $2.4 million.

Those unable to access the online meeting are encouraged to contact MoDOT’s Southwest District Office at (417) 895-7600 and accommodations will be made to share the information and gather feedback.

Auditions set for Joplin Little Theatre production of "Man of La Mancha"

(From Joplin Little Theatre)

Auditions for Man of La Mancha, written by Dale Wasserman, music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion, will be held Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 7 and 8, 7 p.m., at the Joplin Little Theatre, 3009 West First Street, in Joplin.

The production will be co-directed by Gary Roney and Shannon Wendt. The directors are looking for a cast of 20 men and nine women of various ages.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script and a prepared song of one’s choice, which demonstrates their vocal ability. Man of La Mancha, based on Cervantes’ novel, “Don Quixote”, is a remarkable, poignant, moving musical.

Set in the contest of the Spanish Inquisition, it is presented as a play-within-a-play about a dying old man who refuses to relinquish his ideals. “The Impossible Dream” is included in the score.

Performance dates will be Wednesday, March 23 through Saturday, March 26, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 27, 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $18 for adults; $15 for senior citizen/student and $8 for children 12 and under. Individual tickets can be purchased by dropping by the theatre calling the JLT office at 417-623-3638 or online at www.joplinlittle- theatre.org.

For more information call the Joplin Little Theatre at 417-623-3638, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

...WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TUESDAY NIGHT
THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING...

* WHAT...Storm total storm snow amounts over six inches are expected
  over a
wide area with the highest amounts northwest of I-44. Freezing rain
and sleet accumulation will be more significant along and southeast
of I-44 along with some snow accumulation as well.

* WHERE...Portions of southeast Kansas. Portions of central, east
central, south central, southwest, and west central Missouri.

* WHEN...From late Tuesday night through Thursday evening. Rain will
spread into the area during the day Tuesday with a cold frontal
passage. As very cold Arctic air begins to move into the region
Tuesday night, rain will change over to a mix of snow, sleet, and
freezing rain toward midnight over southeast Kansas into central
Missouri. The wintry mix will reach counties near the I-44
corridor by 6 am Wednesday, then to near the Arkansas state line
by late Wednesday afternoon and early evening. The precipitation
will transition to mostly snow Wednesday night with a wintry mix
still possible close to the Arkansas state line. Snow will
continue Thursday before gradually tapering off late in the day
  and in the evening.

* IMPACTS...Areas in the Winter Storm Watch will likely see a
disruption to travel. Some power outages may be possible where ice
accumulation is higher. Much colder air will move into the region
Wednesday night through Friday with temperatures falling into the
single digits and teens at times. The hazardous conditions will
likely impact the Wednesday and Thursday morning and evening
  commutes.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A Winter Storm Watch means the weather
  pattern favors significant
winter weather over the region. However, smaller scale changes to
the forecast storm track and resultant precipitation types,
accumulation, and timing will result in further forecast changes
over the next couple of days. Continue to monitor updated forecasts,
but also prepare for winter weather during the midweek period.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation.

Heartland Opera Theater production to be held at MSSU

(From Southern News Service)

The Heartland Opera Theater will perform Michael Ching’s opera “Remove Shoes Before Entering” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4-5, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, in the Bud Walton Black Box Theatre at Missouri Southern State University.

“Remove Shoes Before Entering” is an original opera about a group of students finding an abandoned building full of items. As they inspect the items, each student reminiscences a memory connected to each object, weaving tales of sorrow and delight to their peers and the audience.

Dr. Will Mountz, Missouri Southern’s interim director of Advising, Counseling and Testing Services, also serves as president and board member of Heartland Opera Theatre.

“We always want our productions to be approachable, so most of our operas are in English and short,” Mountz said.

“Michael Ching’s specialty is writing one-act, hourlong operas, so working with him has been wonderful. He works closely with schools, so he’s been here helping with directing and making sure that the opera fits (with what we do here).”

Ching is an American freelance composer, known for writing his opera “Speed Dating” and an adaptation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” “Remove Shoes Before Entering” had its world premiere in February 2020 at the University of Alabama.

Erik Wolfe, chair of the university’s Theatre Department, serves as stage director, and the cast includes several MSSU students.

“The show doesn't have a ‘chronological order’ but rather an ‘emotional’ order,” said Jarrett Little, a senior vocal performance major. “The show goes through different experiences and phases of life with each reflective piece of music.

“The composer of the opera (Ching) will be working with us and conducting us through the performances, which is an incredible honor for our community.”

Michaela West, a senior theatre performance major, said serving as a cast member in the opera has been a unique experience.

“I’m a theatre kid through and through, and although I’ve done musical theatre most of my life, opera is a totally different ballgame,” she said.

“Many songs, including mine, are being performed in our production for the first time. We’re really getting to explore our songs and our characters solely through our own personal experiences. It’s definitely a challenge but it’s well worth it.”

Admission to the opera is free and open to the public. The Black Box Theatre will be open 30 minutes before the show starts. Seating is limited and masks are required

Prairie State Park to hold guided bison saunter

(From Missouri State Parks)

Team members at Prairie State Park invite the public to join on a Guided Bison Saunter from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, starting at the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center.

"What is a 'saunter'?" you ask. According to Merriam-Webster, "saunter" means "to walk about in an idle or leisurely manner: STROLL" (that is, to walk at a slower pace to take in all the surroundings).

The public is invited to get outside and experience that “prairie feeling” from centuries past. Prairie State Park encompasses almost 4,000 acres of tallgrass prairie, which once covered 33% of Missouri. Now, less than half of 1% remains.

Visitors should be prepared for at least a 2-mile saunter over uneven terrain in winter conditions. Participants should bring water and snacks, wear sturdy footwear, and dress appropriately.

Due to the unique and rare diversity of life preserved at Prairie State Park, pets are not allowed on park trails, except for Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People trails. Bison graze freely in the park, and this regulation protects both you and your pet. You are welcome to bring your leashed pet to the park’s campground and picnic area, but must follow Missouri State Parks’ pet rules. This applies to all types of pets except service animals assisting people with disabilities.

Registration for this event is required, and there is a limit of 25 participants. Call 417-843-6711 to register.

The public is strongly encouraged to follow social-distancing guidelines and be proactive in protecting themselves and others.

Prairie State Park is located at 128 NW 150th Lane, in Mindenmines. To register and get additional information about this event, please contact Prairie State Park at 417-843-6711.
