Cassville woman suffers serious injuries in crash near Wheaton

A Cassville man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 11:30 p.m. Thursday on Highway A one mile west of Wheaton.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2014 Subaru Forester driven by a 65-year-old Cassville woman traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned.

The woman was treated for serious injuries at Mercy Joplin.

 

Joplin, Carterville residents injured in motorcycle crash

Two people were injured in a one-vehicle accident 7:40 p.m. Thursday on Fir Road one mile north of Reeds.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2026 Yamaha motorcycle driven by a 20-year-old Carterville man began to brake causing the vehicle to overturn and travel off the roadway.

The driver was treated for moderate injuries and a passenger, a 23-year-old Joplin woman, for serious injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

 

Seven-year-old Joplin boy injured in ATV accident

A 7-year-old Joplin boy was injured in a two-vehicle accident 4:38 p.m. Friday on Coffee Drive two miles south of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol. report, the boy was on aa 2005 Yamaha F25 ATV when another unknown vehicle traveled off the roadway and struck the ATV and drove off. No other information about that vehicle is provided on the report.

The boy was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Joplin.

Crowder College awarded funding for talent search programs

The U.S. Department of Education recently announced continued funding for Crowder College TRIO programs: Talent Search and Educational Opportunity Center (EOC). These programs provide educational access, college readiness, and workforce development services to 2,287 participants annually across southwest Missouri.

"We are thrilled the Department of Education continued funding for our TRIO programs,” said Dr. Chett Daniel, Crowder College President. “This was a competitive application year and continued funding speaks to the incredible impact of our programs as well as the quality of our staff leading them. TRIO works! These programs strengthen rural communities in our region and provide critical support to help students and adults overcome barriers and achieve their educational and career goals.”

The Educational Opportunity Center was awarded $284,745 annually to serve 1,017 adult participants in Barry, Barton, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, and Vernon counties. The program provides individualized assistance with high school equivalency completion, college admissions, financial aid applications, career and workforce pathway exploration, apprenticeships, industry-recognized credentials, digital literacy, financial literacy, and workforce technology skills, including the use of artificial intelligence tools in the workplace.

In addition, Crowder College received funding in the amounts of $346,164 and $288, 470 annually for two Talent Search programs that will serve a combined 1,270 students in grades 6-12 in the region. Talent Search currently serves the following school districts: Neosho, Seneca,
McDonald County, Wheaton, SWR-5, East Newton, Cassville, Pierce City, Monett, and Exeter.

Through Talent Search, students receive year-round academic and college readiness support, including individual advising, academic success workshops, college campus visits, career exploration activities, workforce development experiences, educational enrichment opportunities, financial literacy education, and counseling services designed to increase high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment rates.

MSSU art exhibit to feature work by Vietnamese Canadian artist Duat Vu

Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) is proud to present Artificially Authentic, But Still Authentic, an exhibition by Vietnamese Canadian artist Duat Vu, as part of the university’s 2026 theme semester on Vietnam. The exhibition will be on view September 7–October 6 in the Cragin Art Gallery, with an artist talk at 12 p.m. and reception at 1 p.m. on September 9.

Duat Vu is a first-generation Vietnamese immigrant, transpacific boat survivor, and Associate Professor of Art at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. Born in Vietnam, Vu escaped with his family during the “boat people” migration following the Vietnam War, an experience that profoundly shaped both his life and artistic practice.

Artificially Authentic, But Still Authentic explores the psychological and emotional aftermath of war, displacement, migration, and cultural duality. Through painting and drawing, Vu reflects on the tension of growing up between Eastern and Western identities while navigating assimilation, memory, trauma, and belonging. Combining personal narrative with expressive figuration and psychological intensity, the exhibition speaks to broader themes of identity, survival, and generational experience.

Vu earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Canada and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting in the United States. Before joining Missouri State University, he taught drawing, painting, and color theory at the University of Kansas and Wichita State University. His work has been exhibited nationally in numerous juried and invitational exhibitions, including multiple exhibitions at Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati and features in New American Paintings.

The exhibition is presented as part of MSSU’s ongoing theme semester program, which explores global cultures and issues through interdisciplinary programming in the arts, humanities, and sciences.
