Jasper man pleads not guilty to kidnapping, assault charges

During a video arraignment Wednesday, Michael Ritchhart, 49, Jasper, pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and assault, and burglary charges.

The crime was described in a news release from the Jasper County Sheriff's Department:

On 8-24-2014 at approximately 7:00 AM, Jasper County Deputies received a call for a medical assist at 11705 Thorn Rd. in Jasper Missouri.

Upon arrival Deputies found a female inside who had been assaulted with injuries to her face, hands, legs and feet. The female was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.
During the investigation, it appears the female had been kidnapped from her residence in the North part of the county on 8-22-2014, and taken to the address on Thorn Road in Jasper.

It also appears that the suspect is the ex-boyfriend of the victim and she had a protection order against him at the time of the incident.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for 9:05 a.m. Wednesday, September 17, before Judge Richard Copeland in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Facebook picture leads to arrest of two in death of Joplin Honkey

Why anyone thought it was a good idea has not been revealed, but the Newton County Sheriff's Department was able to arrest two people on charges of abandoning a corpse after a photo of them with the corpse was placed prominently on her Facebook page.

Chelsie Barry, 24, Carl Junction, and Jared Prier, 26, Joplin, were charged with abandonment of a corpse. The body of Dennis Meyer, 30, Joplin, was found August 22 in the driveway of a resident on Highway D near Diamond.

Meyer's body had a "Joplin Honkey" tattoo on it. A cause of death has not yet been determined.

The Joplin Honkies are described by Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland as a group of "misfit thieves and burglars who get together, hang together."

The bond for Barry and Prier has been set at $50,000.

Southern officials to discuss field house progress

(From Southern News Service)

As construction continues, officials will discuss progress and plans for the Missouri Southern field house at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, on the north end of the track at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

The project was developed following two substantial seven-figure gifts pledged to the Missouri Southern Foundation by the Robert W. Plaster Foundation. Announced in 2011, the gifts represented the largest contribution ever made to the Foundation and were to be used to fund the construction of a baseball field and a multi-purpose athletic facility adjacent to the football field, as well as renovations to the stadium.

Crews from R.E. Smith began construction earlier this year, with the field house expected to open in the fall of 2015.

The $9 million facility will house locker rooms for multiple sports, an athletic training room, meeting rooms, an athletics Hall of Fame, an alumni event center and offices for coaching staff.

The event will feature remarks from Dr. Alan Marble, president of Missouri Southern; Jared Bruggeman, athletic director; head football coach Daryl Daye; former State Sen. Gary Nodler; and donors to the project. Following a check presentation, the media will have the opportunity to discuss the project with campus officials and donors.

"This facility is here because of the generous donations of many individuals," said Bruggeman. "Not only will we be able to house our football, baseball and softball teams, we will have one of, if not the best, athletic training and strength and conditioning facilities in all of Division II.

“It will serve our student-athletes in more ways than that, however, as it will also host a state-of-the art academic study room that can be utilized by every student-athlete."

Donors thanked during dedication of Julio S. Leon Health Services Center

(From Southern News Service)

During the dedication ceremony for the Julio S. León Health Sciences Center, the Missouri Southern Foundation extended a special thank you to the donors who helped bring the project to fruition.

Ribbon cuttings were held for McCune-Brooks Healthcare Foundation Nursing Department, the Pat & Carolyn Phelps Interdisciplinary Simulation Center and the John & Joy Cragin Computer Lab. The Gail & Russell Smith II Endowment for Technical Services Writing was also announced. W. Robert Corley, for whom the Dental Hygiene Clinic is named, was also in attendance.

Also recognized for their contributions to the project were Leland and Donna Browne, Dr. Larry and Elizabeth Deffenbaugh, Dr. Delores and Jim Honey, Anthony and Maridan Kassab, Richard and Teresa Massa, Dr. Charles McGinty, Myron and Janet McKinney, Sara Newman, Mike, Lee and Emma Pound, Bill and Cindy Putnam, Cynthia Schwab, the Sharp Family and Dr. John and Barbara Windle.

Earlier in the day, a ribbon cutting was held for the Ruth Kolpin-Rubison Tiered Classrooms was held in Webster Hall.

“We wish to thank all of the donors who made this day possible,” said Delores Honey, director of donor relations-development for the Missouri Southern Foundation.

A former Carthage police officer pleaded guilty to charges of outraging public decency and engaging in a pattern of criminal offenses and has been placed on probation. The crimes took place while she was an officer with the Miami Police Department:

Thirty-seven-year-old Teresa Lashmet pleaded guilty to two counts of outraging public decency and engaging in a pattern of criminal offenses. She received a three-year deferred sentence.

Rob Lundien named Missouri Secondary School Counselor of the Year

(From Southern News Service)

Robert Lundien, a 1996 graduate of Missouri Southern, has been selected as the Missouri Secondary School Counselor of the Year.

A counselor at Staley High School in Kansas City, Lundien was notified of the selection earlier this month. He will be officially recognized during the Missouri School Counselor Association’s Fall Conference, to be held Nov. 2-4 at Tan-Tar-A Resort.

After graduating from Missouri Southern with a degree in music education, Lundien’s teaching career included serving as band director in Diamond, a counselor for Neosho High School and working in special education for the Webb City School District. While his first love was music, he said he felt a calling to transition into the counseling field.

“There were kids struggling with outside issues and influences on their lives and bringing them to school,” he said. “I started the graduate program at Missouri State and realized that counseling was something I wanted to do in order to help students in a different capacity.

“It was a hard decision to let go of the band world because it had been a major part of my life.”

Lundien said that his time at Missouri Southern left him feeling prepared to succeed in the teaching field.

“I really felt like the classroom experience and going out into the schools helped me have a better knowledge and understanding of what it would be like,” he said. “The quality of education I received was top notch. I felt like the professors went out of their way to make sure we were prepared for the real world.”

“We were taught early on in the music department that achieving success and results will take hard work. That has carried me through teaching and counseling. Making sure the kids are succeeding is a constant process that never ends.”

While he now lives in Kansas City, Lundien has remained involved with Missouri Southern. He currently serves on a teacher education committee that is in charge of scholarships.

“It’s quite an honor for one of our alums to be selected for this award,” said Dr. Al Cade, interim dean of the School of Education. “We are so excited for Rob.”

Jasper man arrested for kidnapping ex-girlfriend, assault

(From the Jasper County Sheriff's Department)

On 8-25-2014, the suspect was located and arrested and is currently in custody at the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center awaiting the filing of formal charges.

Michael L. Ritchhart, 49, of Jasper was arrested for Kidnapping, 2nd degree domestic assault and violation of a protection order.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges may arise from this incident.

Early trash pickup Monday and Tuesday in Joplin

(From the City of Joplin)

For the safety and health of Republic Services employees that provide the City of Joplin’s residential trash service, the August 25 and 26 collections will start at 5 a.m. instead of 6 a.m. The trash trucks will run through the early portion of the routes picking up all trash that is set out, and then make another pass after 6 a.m. to pick up trash that was missed. The City is granting this variance from the 6 a.m. start time due to the excessive heat advisory, which is due to expire Tuesday evening. The City of Joplin understands the necessity of protecting the trash truck drivers from the hazards of extreme heat. Should the heat advisory continue, the 5:00 a.m. start time will be announced.
Mary Anne Phillips, Recycling Coordinator, stated, “We understand that some residents may not have their trash out by 5 a.m. or learn about the change, but if it is out by 6 a.m., the trash will still be picked up.”
Should the need arise, residents are advised to call Republic Services at (800) 431-1507 for customer service issues. Phillips said the trash company managers are taking every precaution to protect their employees such as monitoring the drivers and providing cool drinks throughout the day.
The City apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause but are confident that residents will understand due to the current severe heat advisory and heat index.

Reception planned for Traveling Turkey exhibit at MSSU

(From Southern News Service)

An opening reception for the exhibit “Traveling Turkey – An Artist’s Journey: Istanbul and Beyond” will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Spiva Art Gallery.

The exhibition features a socio-cultural, research photo journal of architecture, sculpture, paintings, murals and various cultural highlights from art faculty travels to Turkey.

“Recently, I traveled to Istanbul with a friend, Eric Rasheed,” said Christine Bentley, head of the art department at Missouri Southern. “Our photographs are featured in the show.”

The exhibit will introduce the culture of Istanbul as well as Islamic art and architecture to the campus and community.

“I went to Istanbul with some hesitancy,” said Bentley. “The day I arrived, England had just put out a travel warning advisory. Probably every night there I heard demonstrations and tear gas canisters being let off.”

Despite the political unrest, she said that it was a rewarding journey.

“I had such a pleasant experience. It’s a very colorful place,” said Bentley. “Their architecture and art was lovely to experience.”

The photographs taken in Turkey have acted as an impetus for the creation of faculty and student artwork that will be featured alongside the framed and matted digital photographs from the trip to Istanbul. The exhibit will also feature textiles, ceramics and books brought back from Turkey.

An art show tied to each fall’s themed semester will become an annual event, said Bentley. Next spring, a member of the art department faculty will take a group of students to Spain, and they will create an exhibit based on their experiences.

“Traveling Turkey” will be on display through Sept. 5. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Leons to attend MSSU health sciences center dedication ceremony

(From Southern News Service)

A formal dedication ceremony for the Julio S. León Health Sciences Center will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27.

The announcement for the building dedication was made in April during a tribute dinner for former Missouri Southern President Dr. Julio León and his wife, Vivian. Having served previously as a faculty member in the Business Department and later as its dean, León was named president of the college in 1982. He served for 25 years before resigning in 2007.

Dr. León is currently the special adviser to the executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas System, in charge of creating a new university and a medical school in South Texas.

The Leóns will be attending Wednesday’s ceremony. It will be followed by separate ceremonies to dedicate the McCune-Brooks Healthcare Foundation Nursing Department, the Pat & Carolyn Phelps Interdisciplinary Simlation Center and the John & Joy Cragin Computer Lab.

“We want to honor each of the major donors who have provided funds for the project and have allowed us to honor them in this way,” said Delores Honey, director of donor relations-development for the MSSU Foundation.

W. Robert Corley, for whom the Dental Hygiene Clinic is named, will also be recognized for his contributions, she said.

Earlier in the day, a separate dedication ceremony for the Ruth I. Kolpin-Rubison Tiered Classrooms will be held at 11 a.m. in Webster Hall. An announcement of the Gail & Ruth Smith II Endowment for Technical Services Writing will also be made.

“It’s a writing program that the Smiths are underwriting to encourage technical writing,” said Honey. “It will be overseen by the English Department.”

JoAnn Graffam, director of the MSSU Foundation, said that the day’s events are important not only to recognize Dr. León and the others donors, but also to honor the university’s history and commitment to its students.

“Our students are able to prepare for their careers because of Dr. León’s dedication and leadership, and because of the contributions from these donors,” she said. “They’re helping students to achieve success and that’s why we’re all here.”
