Creating partnerships with area businesses and generating new sources of revenue will be the focus of a new initiative at Missouri Southern State University.
Rod Surber was recently tapped to serve as the university’s director of account development.
“We have, for several years, been looking to consider ways to generate additional revenue and to use some of our platforms for advertising and more significant marketing purposes for entities outside the university,” said Surber.
Targeted platforms for the initiative include the Missouri Southern website and the campus digital signage.
His duties will include working closely with several other departments, including University Relations & Marketing, Information Technology, Athletics, the Foundation, the Alumni Association and others.
“I’m really excited about it,” said Surber. “We have a lot to offer as a campus to businesses and outside entities. We are essentially a city of 7,000 – we have 5,500 students, 1,200 full- and part-time employees – not to mention the more than 1 million campus visitors each year and 1.6 million website visitors. We have a nice audience to deliver.
“Missouri Southern alumni are loyal to the institution and would most likely be loyal to entities that support us and advertise with us.”
He will report to Vice President for Business Affairs Rob Yust.
“The Account Development position was developed as a means to further engage the community with our campus as well as providing an additional revenue stream,” said Yust. “Rod has been at Southern for a number of years and is well known in the community. He should excel in this position.”
The new position represents Surber’s fourth post at the university, having previously served as Director of University Relations & Marketing, Director of Web Content and News Bureau Manager during his nearly 23 years at MSSU.
