City of Joplin launches study to explore future public transportation

(From the City of Joplin)

The successful relaunch of the Trolley in February was a major step forward for public transportation in Joplin. Having been idled for two years due to staffing and resource challenges, the program is back up and running better than ever.

Now, the City wants your input. A short public survey is available to help shape the future of transit in the Joplin region. We encourage all citizens to take a few minutes to share their needs and ideas—your voice matters!

For long-term sustainability and to meet the expressed needs of citizens, the City recognizes there is a larger regional opportunity and has launched the Joplin Regional Transit Study. Funded by a grant from the Federal Transportation Administration, the study aims to identify regional partners and options for transit expansion that continue to provide affordable access to jobs, education, healthcare, and public services across the Joplin region.

“Staff are working with transit riders, area leaders, community organizations, the business community, and other stakeholders to discover what’s next for transit in the Joplin region,” said Tony Robyn, Assistant City Manager. “We are looking for what’s possible and long-term solutions for public transportation within our region, while identifying sustainable governing structures of a metropolitan system, such as a transit authority.”

Public transportation involves many variables, and developing a regional system will be a collaborative effort among the communities. One of the first steps is to gather data from citizens about their needs and work with community leaders in the area.

“We want to hear from everyone as we begin the discussions to develop potential solutions for a long-term structure that is more resilient, sustainable, and meets the needs of the whole area. The goal is to improve mobility across the metro region,” he said.

Citizens can easily share their thoughts through the short survey.

North Heights Porchfest subject of Newsmakers program

(From KGCS)

A walk this fall in one Joplin neighborhood offers a chance to experience live music from a variety of genres. The North Heights Porchfest is the focus of the next Newsmakers program.

The annual event was born out of care and concern for the North Heights neighborhood. The non-profit organization formed from that concern is coordinating the event that will feature more than 60 bands or solo musical artists performing on porches or yards October 4th. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with bands beginning at noon.

New coordinator Angela Hudson shares other event features including arts, crafts, and vendors. Moira McGhee discusses Market in the Park events at the old Columbia school property that owners are allowing the group to use and renovate for future neighborhood projects including a possible stage for Porchfest performances. Singer songwriter Kara Middick performs and shares why she will take part in Porchfest this year.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. beginning June 22 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, June 28 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS – Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS-TV programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Optimum Internet. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
