The Tournées Film Festival will open with “Les Femmes du 6eme Etage” (“The Women on the Sixth Floor”) at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, in Billingsly Student Center at Missouri Southern State University.
A Parisian captain of industry learns that there’s much more to life than turning a profit in Philippe Le Guay’s charming movie about friendship across class and language divides. Set in 1962, it centers on the transformation of third-generation stockbroker Jean- Louis. The self-centered businessman starts to discover his altruistic side after he’s made aware of the inferior plumbing and other, graver hardships endured by the half-dozen Spanish maids, refugees from Franco’s regime, who live above him.
Admission is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided.
Last fall, the Honors Program and Spiva Library received a $2,200 grant through the French-American Cultural Exchange (FACE) Foundation to stage the French film festival on campus. The program, now in its 20th year, has partnered with more than 450 universities to bring French cinema to campuses in the United States.
The Tournées Festival is made possible with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US, the Centre National de la Cinématographie et de l’Image Animée, and the Franco-American Cultural Fund.

Five arrested for DWI during Joplin checkpoint

On Saturday March 19th, 2016 the Joplin Police Department along with members of the Southwest Missouri DWI Taskforce and the support of MADD hosted a DWI checkpoint at 7 th and Illinois.
The goals of the checkpoint were to:
1. Detect and apprehend impaired drivers
2. Raise Awareness to the dangers of Driving while intoxicated or impaired.
3. Encourage people to plan events and alternate transportation accordingly.
The checkpoints were in service from 9:20 pm to 2:00 am Sunday morning. One thousand seventy-three drivers were contacted. Seventeen field sobriety tests were conducted on subjects

14 -total tickets
26 -warnings
1 –felony warrant
6 -total arrests
This checkpoint was funded through a grant provided by the Missouri Department of Transportation Highway Safety Division.

Carthage man injured in accident near Granby
A Carthage man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 7:40 a.m. today on U. S. 60, five miles east of Granby.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2009 Ford Focus driven by Phillip C. Soule, 33, Neosho, struck the rear of a 2005 Hyundai Sonata driven by Mason A. Rea, 27, Carthage.
Rea was treated for minor injuries at Mercy McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Mikah J. Graffis, 17, Granby, lost control of a 2000 Dodge Stratus on a gravel roadway, slid off the roadway and struck a tree. The car caught on fire. The report notes that Graffis, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:08 p.m., by Newton County Deputy Coroner Brian Artherton, was listed as the driver pending further investigation.
A passenger, Ethan T. Hailey, 15, Stark City, was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.
The fatality was the 25th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Two Joplin residents injured as car crashes into tree
Two Joplin residents were injured in a one-vehicle accident 3:28 a.m. today on Spurgeon Road, three miles south of Joplin.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1999 GMC Yukon driven by William R. Hall, 39, Joplin, ran off the roadway and struck a tree.
Hall and a passenger, Stacie M. Kuhn, 37, Joplin, were treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.
