"Created Equal" film series to conclude at Missouri Southern

The “Created Equal” film series will conclude with “Slavery by Another Name” on Wednesday, March 5, at Missouri Southern State University.
The documentary – which debuted at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival – film focuses on new forms of forced labor that kept thousands of African Americans in bondage until the onset of World War II.
There will be film clips and a discussion at noon in Cornell Auditorium in Plaster Hall. A screening of the full film and a discussion will be offered at 7 p.m. in Phelps Theatre, located in Billingsly Student Center.
The discussion will be led by Dr. Norton Wheeler, an associate professor at Missouri
Southern who teaches courses in Asian history and in U.S. history, including African American history. He is currently engaged in research projects involving Frederick Douglass and George Washington Carver.
The program is free and open to the public.
The series was made possible through the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
Partial clouse of Meadow scheduled for next week

Meadow will be closed between 23rd & 24th Street on Monday , March 3, 2014 at 7:00 a.m. until Friday , March 7, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. The street will be closed to traffic as Kenny Singer Construction will have the area closed while they install water lines. Residents in the area will be allowed access to their property but there will be no through traffic.
Detour routes will be in place. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution in these areas and will need to utilize alternate routes during this period.

Missouri Southern site for annual History Day

The Social Sciences Department at Missouri Southern State University will host the Missouri Region 6 History Day on Friday, March 7.
The theme for this year’s event is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.” Students may explore any facet of world, American or local history pertaining to the theme, so long as their entries utilize relevant primary and secondary sources and assess the topic's significance in history. An entry may take the form of a research paper, an exhibit (a display similar to a museum exhibit), a performance, a documentary presented as a video or PowerPoint, or a website.
Students from area high schools, junior high schools, middle schools and home schools have been invited to enter. Winners from the regional contest, one of nine in Missouri, will have the opportunity to compete in National History Day in Missouri on April 26 at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Winners from the state competition may go on to the national contest in June at College Park, Md.
This year, area schools have submitted over 160 History Day entries. Participating schools include: Carthage Junior High, Carthage High School, Joplin High School, Joplin East Middle School, Joplin North Middle School, Joplin South Middle School, Neosho Christian School, Neosho Middle School, Neosho Junior High, Neosho High School, St. Peter’s Middle School, Seneca R-7 School, Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School and Wheaton R-3 School.
Students in sixth through eighth grades will compete in the Junior Division; grades nine through 12 form the Senior Division. Judges will include Missouri Southern faculty as well as volunteers from the community with a special interest in history. Judging begins at 9 a.m. and will for most categories be completed by noon.
The public is invited to view the exhibits on display in Conner Ballroom on the third floor of Billingsly Student Center, as well as the performances and documentary presentations in various rooms on the second floor of Webster Hall.
