Pittsburg couple arrested during burglary

Just before noon on Monday, March 2, 2020, Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a reported burglary of an unoccupied home northeast of Columbus.

As the deputies arrived, one suspect emerged from the house while another came out of a garage. The suspects, identified as 42-year-old Dallas Kinnaird and 38-year-old Kren Kinnaird, both of Pittsburg, were placed under arrest.

During the course of the investigation, evidence emerged implicating the suspects in the burglary of another nearby property, along with possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Both suspects were transported to the Cherokee County Jail where they are each being held in lieu of $16,000.00 bond on allegations of two counts of burglary, two counts of criminal damage to property, possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Carthage Technical Center to team with Lowe's to build tiny house

Many Career and Technical Education (CTE) Carpentry programs across the region and nation have long been building tiny homes. Carthage Tech Center is now joining the game.

Students in Mr. Nathan Olinger’s Carpentry classes will construct the house on site at CTC’s north campus. Upon being completed, the house will be auctioned at a date TBD. The tiny house allows students to gain real-world experiences as to the various skills and knowledge needed to construct a quality home, only on a “tiny” scale. 

The house will be 288 sqft – 12x24, and feature instant hot water, full size shower, a kitchenette, room for a stackable washer and dryer, and a covered front porch.

Dr. Holley Goodnight, CTC Director, had this to say about the project, “We are very excited to be adding the tiny house project to the carpentry curriculum at the Carthage Technical Center. This project will allow students to be involved in every phase of the construction process and gain additional skills in areas such as electricity and plumbing, which they will use throughout their life. I can’t wait to watch them throughout the building process and see the finished product.”

First year teacher, Mr. Olinger is anxious to get started. As a former CTC Carpentry student from the mid 90’s, he remembers the days of building homes in carpentry class. He views this as a step toward getting back into the residential construction realm. He had this to say about the project, “I personally think this is a budget friendly way to start these students into the wonderful world of construction. The tiny homes give an almost step-by-step equivalent of building a residential house. I’m very excited about this project and future possibilities.”

Carthage Lowe’s has joined forces with CTC as the vendor for all materials and supplies needed to finish the house.
