"Cruisin' to Christmas" theme of Joplin Christmas Parade
(From Freeman Health System) Freeman Health System and city officials announced the theme of the 51st Annual Joplin Christmas Parade – Cruisin’ to Christmas at a joint press conference today.
“Freeman Health System has managed the parade since 2014,” said Paula F. Baker, Freeman President and Chief Executive Officer. “We’re honored the City of Joplin entrusts us with this endeavor. It takes hundreds of volunteer hours and many dedicated hearts to orchestrate a celebration of this magnitude — we embrace this challenge because it’s our way of giving back to the community that has supported us for more than 96 years.”
This year marks the return to a traditional parade down Joplin’s Main Street at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, December 7. The parade route starts at 15th and Main Street and ends at 3rd Street. Freeman will coordinate band and float entries. Businesses, charities, schools and community groups are encouraged to participate.
“I would like to express gratitude to our city leaders for choosing us as their partners again for the annual Christmas Parade,” said Ryan Melton, Freeman Interim Executive Director of Development. “We are excited that our community will get to experience this great event together and I’m most excited that it will benefit the medical needs of kids in our community through Freeman and Children’s Miracle Network.”
Funds generated by the 2021 Joplin Christmas Parade will go to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®, which provides assistance to children from birth to 21 years of age in a 14-county area in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. All money raised stays local, helping children with medical needs and their families. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals helps furnish and maintain Freeman Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, provides funding for local community organizations’ pediatric needs and provides pediatric emergency equipment for area agencies.
Freeman is seeking entries for the big event. Entry fees are $50 for-profit organizations and $15 non-profit organizations, while schools and bands are free. Spaces are limited, and the last day to register is November 28. Art professionals to speak at symposium at Missouri Southern
(From Southern News Service) Business and visual arts professionals will provide expert insight into the business end of professional arts careers during the annual Nanette Philibert Business of Art Symposium from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Missouri Southern State University.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom.
“The symposium allows for us to cover topics that sometimes do not fit neatly into our already established curriculum,” said Frank Pishkur, chair of the Department of Art and Design. “It’s a service designed to expand our professional development efforts for our majors and our regional community of artists, highlighting some of the resources, issues, and concerns that artists need to navigate as they plan to pursue and/or continue their professional practice.”
The sessions and presenters will include:
“Museum Career Opportunities for Artists”: Dr. Kimberly Masteller, curator of South and Southeast Asian Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.
“Insights in Self-Publishing, Illustrating and Marketing Children’s Books”: Isaiah Bayse, a graduate of MSSU’s teacher education program and a self-taught illustrator and author.
“Recent Community Developments for Art”: Emily Frankoski, director of Connect2Culture.
“Overview of the Neosho Arts Council”: Janet Penn, a board member on the Neosho Arts Council.
“MSSU’s Arts Management and Leadership Certificate”: Erick Wolfe, chair of the Theatre Department.
“Regional Graduate Studies Opportunities”: Donna Smith Jones, director of recruitment and outreach at the University of Arkansas School of Art.
At the conclusion of the event, design students at Missouri Southern will have the opportunity to participate in a breakout portfolio review led by Chloe McMain, director of creative services and branding/interim director of University Relations & Marketing at MSSU.
The symposium is a joint effort between the Department of Art and Design, and the Missouri Small Business Development Center at MSSU. Webb City man killed in motorcycle crash at St. Louis and Euclid
(From the Joplin Police Department)On October 31st, 2021 at 00:13 am officers with the Joplin Police Department responded to St. Louis Avenue and Euclid Avenue for an injury crash.
Officers found a motorcycle was driving southbound on St. Louis Avenue and struck the positive pedestrian island at Euclid Avenue.
The motorcycle operator was ejected from the motorcycle. A secondary crash occurred when a northbound vehicle struck the deceased in the roadway prior to officers arrival on scene.
The operator of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased on scene. He has been identified as Joseph Chapman, age 24, of Webb City, Missouri. Next of kin notification have been made.
The initial crash appears to be impairment related. No charges are being sought for the driver involved in the secondary crash.
Carl Junction man identified as victim in officer-related shooting
(From the Joplin Police Department)The deceased suspect from this incident has been identified as Joseph Shane Endicott, age 41, of Carl Junction, Missouri. An autopsy has been scheduled for today at 10:30 am in Ozark, Missouri.

On October 30th, 2021, at 3:42 pm the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call of a report of a disturbance. The caller described being assaulted by a male with a weapon.
Officers responded to 1523 S. Kentucky Avenue and the first officer arrived on scene at 3:44 pm.
During the incident, there was an officer involved shooting involving 3 officers from the Joplin Police Department. The suspect shot during the incident is deceased. His name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin. No officers were injured during the incident.
The officers involved are being placed on paid administrative leave per departmental policy and procedure. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has been requested to assist with the investigation.
