Portion of Main Street in downtown Joplin to be closed Thursday morning

(From the City of Joplin)

Main Street from 4th Street to 7th Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, November 4 to through traffic.

This closure will allow for the City to bring in a crane for maintenance workers to access the roof and flagpoles on top of City Hall.

City maintenance workers will untangle the American Flag from its flagpole, and also restring the pole for the Missouri State flag to be flown again on this building.

Drivers should use streets east or west of Main Street during this brief closure and remain cautious as they near the detours. The City appreciates your patience.

Southern Symphony Orchestra to perform Friday

(From Southern News Service)

The Southern Symphony Orchestra will offer an evening of “Smooth,” easy listening during a performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, in the auditorium at Joplin High School, 2104 S. Indiana Ave.

Under the direction of Dr. Canès Nicolas, assistant professor of music, the orchestra will offer a selection of orchestral standards and new works – from Vivaldi to Carlos Santana.

“We wanted to go with an uplifting, laid-back concert,” said Nicolas. “People are finally getting back to performance halls and we want to give them something they can enjoy.”

The performance will begin with a double violin concerto by Vivaldi. Another selection will treat audiences to a more “cinematic” feel, and Nicolas will celebrate his heritage with two selections from Haiti.

“The very last piece will be ‘Smooth’ by Santana,” he said. “It was one of the last hits of the ‘90s and one of the first hits of the 2000s. It’s one of those songs that will never go out of time.”

So in other words, give the Southern Symphony Orchestra your heart, make it real or else forget about it.

Nicolas said the 30-member orchestra will next perform during the Spring 2022 semester in conjunction with a campus choral ensemble.
