Cherokee County Sheriff's Office receives $30,000 grant for narcotic investigation equipment

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office was recently notified by the Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council that their grant application was selected and awarded.

The Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, being administered through the Kansas Governor's Grants Program, will provide $29,751.00 to the Sheriff's Office.

"The increase in fentanyl being seen across the country and even right here in Cherokee County, doesn't just pose a significant risk to those who intentionally abuse illicit drugs, but also presents a risk to deputies and investigators who come across drugs which may contain fentanyl," according to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

"This grant will allow our agency to obtain equipment which will let law enforcement know the identity of a suspected drug without having to be exposed to the drug itself. Without this equipment, deputies or investigators must open the packaging the suspected drugs are in to conduct a chemical reagent field test, but with the addition of the new equipment provided by the grant, they will now be able to conduct a non-contact test for up to 530 different substances," continued Sheriff Groves.

The Sheriff's Office hopes to receive the equipment and have it deployed by the end of the year.

Missouri National Guard's 135th Army Band to perform at Missouri Southern

Celebrate Veterans’ Day with music! All are invited to a free concert by the Missouri National Guard’s 135th Army Band. Veterans, current and past Service Members, military families, and community members are encouraged to honor and celebrate the service of the region’s military community at 7:00 pm Thursday, November 9 in the Taylor Performing Arts Center Auditorium on the Missouri Southern State University Campus.

The 135th Army Band is under the Command of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Keith Moyer and First Sergeant Charles Bart. The Citizen-Soldiers of the 135th Army Band represent a diverse group of individuals who proudly serve our great Nation and State.

“They are college students, engineers, teachers, music performers, pilots, business professionals, and your neighbors,” said Public Affairs Representative Staff Sergeant Laura Mudge. “As Soldiers of the Missouri Army National Guard, they stand ready to answer the call and to represent all those who have, and will, wear the uniform proudly.”

The concert is sponsored by the Missouri Southern State University Department of Communications and Department of Music with additional support from Dawson Heritage Foundation, Pinocchio School of Dance and Joplin Elks Lodge #501. Representatives from various veteran service organizations will have information available in the TPAC lobby.

“This event will be a wonderful, musical experience for our community,” said Lisa Olliges, KGCS General Manager. “The concert will also be recorded for programming on KGCS so even more people can enjoy the talented musicians in the 135th Army Band.”

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.

 

Carl Junction Chamber seeking new executive director, Cavanaugh Studyvin leaving end of November

The Carl Junction Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is begrudgingly happy to announce that Cavanaugh Studyvin, our amazing Executive Director, has accepted an incredible opportunity. Unfortunately, this incredible opportunity is not with our chamber of commerce. 

In all seriousness, while we will miss her incredibly, we are excited to see the impact she will make in this new chapter. Her last day will be the end of November.

Once we have collected all our tears, we will begin the search for a new Executive Director who can fill the enormous shoes she will leave behind. More details coming soon!

Sgt. Kristian Dalglish and his fearless four-legged partner, K9 Zeke, have completed their intensive training and are ready to take to the streets. They're not just trained; they're battle-ready, certified, and eager to contribute to the safety and well-being of our community!

This dynamic duo embodies the spirit of dedication and excellence we cherish in Duenweg. Sgt. Dalglish and K9 Zeke are geared up to tackle everything from crime prevention to community engagement, proving that hard work and perseverance truly pay off.
