Joplin man injured in collision in Granby

Two people injured in a two-vehicle collision 10:05 p.m. Saturday on Main Street at Pine Street in Granby.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2026 Honda 4-wheeler driven by a 19-year-old Joplin man was turning right and was struck by an unknown vehicle.

The driver was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

A passenger on his vehicle, a female whose age and address were not included in the report, was treated for minor injuries at Freeman Neosho.

Carthage man suffers serious injuries in motorcycle accident

A Carthage man was injured in a one-vehicle accident 2:45 p.m. Sunday on private property on Fir Road a mile and a half east of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2007 Yamaha V Star 1300 driven by a 52-year-old Carthage man, tipped over while in motion.

The driver was treated for serious injuries at Mercy Joplin.

Webb City, Stella residents injured in head-on collision on Garrison Avenue

 Two people were injured in a two-vehicle collision 3:13 p.m. Friday on Garrison Avenue two miles south of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1995 Buick LeSabre driven by a 31-year-old Stella man crossed the center of the roadway and struck a 2017 Ford Fusion driven by a 50-year-old Webb City man head on.

Both drivers were treated for serious injuries at Mercy Joplin.

Carthage woman injured in accident on Fir Road

A Carthage woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 5:30 p.m. Friday on Fir Road a half mile east of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Toyota 4Runner driven by a 22-year-old Carthage woman drove off the right side of the road, struck a bridge rail and overturned.

The driver was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Joplin.

Langston Hughes Broadway Bridge reopens

The Langston Hughes Broadway Bridge repair project has been completed ahead of schedule, with traffic able to travel across the structure once again.

The 620-foot-long bridge located between Landreth and Virginia Streets on Langston Hughes Broadway is a significant overpass that takes drivers past the Donald C. Clark Public Safety and Justice Center and connects Florida Avenue traffic to Main Street and Downtown Joplin.

The City closed the bridge on Aug. 3, anticipating repair work would take several weeks. It reopened with the work completed on Aug. 6. The City contracted KCI Construction for the project, which replaced the old, steel expansion joints on each end of the bridge with a new water-tight joint system that uses polymer material.

Expansion joints are critical on a bridge because they help the structure grow and shrink as it responds to varying factors such as weather and weight of vehicles.

The result is a much quieter driving experience as you cross the 41-year-old bridge. Coty Pringle, a Project Coordinator with the City’s Public Works department, said the former expansion joints were not only noisy, but creating a hazardous situation. 

The week before closing the bridge for repair, crews closed one lane because the hot temperatures damaged a steel joint, making the lane undrivable. The entire bridge was closed days later for the planned work.

The City anticipates the new expansion joints will preserve the historic bridge for many years to come.

“This was a fast-tracked project, and we’re appreciative of the contractor for their speed and expertise,” said Pringle. “We know there are a lot of road projects in motion this summer and we’re thankful to drivers, business owners and residents for their patience as we make improvements and repairs.”
