Thomas Jefferson ACT scores top area schools, other local schools' scores declining

(From Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School)

With an average composite score of 29 on the ACT, the TJ Class of 2013 once again tops the list of average composite scores for area schools. The TJ average composite score is also significantly higher than the average for independent schools that are part of TJ’s accrediting body, the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS). The TJ Class of 2013 average was an increase of almost two points over the Class of 2012.

This news comes at a time when Joplin-area schools continue to score below the state average, and several, including Joplin High School, are seeing scores go down.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) published composite score averages for all Missouri public schools on Sunday, and the results are available online on DESE’s website.

The ACT is the standardized test that measures the educational development of high school students, and their ability to complete college-level work. It is a significant measurement colleges and universities use to make decisions about admissions and merit-based scholarships. In addition to their spectacular ACT Composite Score average, the TJ Class of 2013 receivedmore than $2.5 million in merit-based scholarship offers.
