Joplin Public Library to begin summer reading program next week

(From the Joplin Public Library)

Readers of all ages will explore favorite stories, rediscover classics, find new favorites, and imagine their own stories this summer during Joplin Public Library’s all-ages summer reading challenge. The 2020 Summer Reading Program (“Imagine Your Story”) begins May 26 and concludes July 25.

Due to COVID-19 and our need to practice social distancing, the 2020 Summer Reading Program at JPL will look a bit different than programs from previous years.

As always, participants are able to track their progress on physical game boards (available on our website and in-house when the library reopens to the public). For the first time ever, JPL summer reading participants will have the option to track their reading electronically!

Joplin Public Library is utilizing Beanstack, an online reading tracking platform, to log reading and activities and to document prizes earned. Beanstack awards badges for every hour read as well as for activities completed. Once the library is open to the general public, participants can redeem their virtual badges for prizes or entries into prize drawings.

Registering is easy! Visit https://joplinpubliclibrary.beanstack.org to register yourself or your whole family!

The 2020 Children’s Summer Reading Program is open to children ages 0-12 and is divided into three categories: pre-readers (ages 0-4), early readers (ages 5-8), and readers (ages 9-12). For each level completed (two levels total), participants will earn a free book!

Our summer reading events will look different this year as well. On Thursday, May 28, Mad Science will present their Energy Burst workshop virtually via the Zoom online video meeting platform. This program requires pre-registration and is limited to 20 children, as Mad Science will deliver supplies one week prior to the event. This program is for children in grades K-5. Parents/caregivers may register beginning May 18 by phone from 0 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday at 417-623-7953 or by email at childrens@joplinpubliclibrary.org. Look for information on more summer reading events soon.

The 2020 Teen Summer Reading Challenge is open to teens in grades 6-12. Teens are invited to track their reading and summer activity progress on Beanstack and earn prizes; they may also visit the JPL website to print individual game boards. Opportunities for entries into the grand prize drawing will also be available.

The 2020 Adult Summer Reading Program is open to adults ages 18 and up. Adults are invited to track their reading and summer activity progress on Beanstack and earn prizes. They may also visit the JPL website to print individual game boards. Opportunities for entries into the grand prize drawing will also be available.

Participants can pick up physical game boards during the library’s curbside pick up hours; they may also download game boards at http://www.joplinpubliclibrary.org/summer-reading-program/

For more information, call the library at 417-623-7953 or visit our website.

All programs are free of charge and no library card is required to participate in the summer reading challenges.
