Three-year-old taken to Freeman with serious injuries following canoeing accident on Elk River

Two people were injured in a boating accident 3:45 p.m. Monday at Trestle Bridge on Elk River, just east of Ginger Blue.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 14-foot Winona canoe helmed by Jared N. Scarbrough, 34, Miami, Oklahoma, attempted to negotiate the swift water under Trestle Bridge and struck the bridge pier.

Scarbrough and Meghan R. Scarbrough, 30, Miami, were ejected. A three-year-old boy was trapped between the canoe and the pier.







Witness statements indicate the child may have been underwater for approximately three minutes. Bystanders were able to enter the water and remove the child from the canoe.

The three-year-old was taken to Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, with serious injuries. Meghan Scarbrough received minor injuries.
