E 15th Street in Joplin reopens after stormwater improvements

 (From the City of Joplin)

East 15th Street is now open following progress on stormwater improvements in the area between Highview Avenue and Mississippi Avenue. This work was part of the stormwater project in the Texas Avenue area, and was one of the nine stormwater projects being funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)

The road is currently drivable, and final paving will be completed in the coming weeks. Asphalt plants operate seasonally, and paving requires consistently warmer temperatures to ensure a quality, long-lasting surface.

Projects such as these improve stormwater flow through the area and reduce the risk of flooding on roadways and properties after rain events. Installing concrete inlets, stormwater boxes, and larger pipes helps ensure efficient water flow and mitigate flooding in the area.

The City appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to improve our community’s infrastructure. For questions or more information, please contact the City of Joplin Public Works Department at 417-624-0820, ext. 1520.

Ewert Park renovations to be featured on Newsmakers

(From KGCS)

The year was 1925. Joplin was still a segregated community. Businessman and attorney Paul A. Ewert, who died the year before, had given14 acres of property and funds to create a park for the Joplin Black community. Ewert Park would open in July of 1925. A century later, the park is getting a more than nine-million-dollar renovation. Those plans are the focus of the next Newsmakers program.

Joplin Parks and Recreation Director, Paul Bloomberg, shares details of the many changes coming to Ewert Park that include a splash park, ice ribbon, covered basketball courts and attached amphitheater. Members of a stakeholders committee: Fred Palmer, Tracey Thompson, Melodee Colbert Kean and Chalise Cooper explain their role in helping plan the park renovations to include references to its rich history for the Black community and residents of East Town.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. beginning February 15 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, February 21 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS – Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS-TV programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Optimum Internet. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
