(From KGCS)Route 66 is nicknamed The Mother Road, and in its heyday, mom-and-pop style businesses were popular stops. Two of those, Mr. Swiss Drive-In and Mac’s Bakery, are the focus of the next Newsmakers program as we recognize Women’s History Month and the Route 66 Centennial with Historic Murphysburg Preservation Inc.
Mr. Swiss Drive-In and Mac’s Bakery were both located at 7th and Sergeant which is considered the entrance to the Historic Murphysburg neighborhood in Joplin. Mary Anne Phillips and Paula Callihan with Historic Murphysburg Preservation Inc. detail the history of Mr. Swiss which was owned and operated by Emma Sue and Hugh Hills.
Mac’s Bakery was the passion project of Dorothy and Wally Peck. Both were truly family businesses with their children working there. Michelle Endicott Peck shares her experiences working at Mac’s Bakery, and her mother’s work ethic and talent for making sweet treats.
