MSSU programs to help students, community members in need during holidays topic for Newsmakers

(From KGCS)

Christmas is the season of giving but for adult students with families paying tuition and household bills can put a pinch on the budget for gifts. Roary’s Gift Express is the answer to that concern, and the KOAM Toybox does the same for community families in need. Both are the focus of the next Newsmakers program.

Academic Success Coach & Coordinator Julie Christiansen explains how students apply for the program that enlists faculty and staff to adopt families and shop for Christmas gifts for kids. Marsi Archer, Dean of Arts and Sciences shares the joy she finds being part of a crew that wraps the presents. Daniel Camp from KOAM shares the mission of the long running Toybox Campaign which collects gift donations and includes on-air telethons to raise funds to purchase presents for kids in the station’s viewing area.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of October 25 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, October 30 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS – Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS-TV programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
